English Opens Doors Program 

Initiative of the Chilean Ministry of Education and United Nations Development Program



Expands English language opportunities for Chilean students and teachers in public and subsidized schools.


National Volunteer Center Recruits native and near-native English speakers to teach English in Chile under the direction of head teachers in public and subsidized schools.

24 pedagogical hours per week teaching in the classroom 11 additional hours per week – 4 leading extracurricular activities – 5 lesson planning independently – 2 lesson planning with head teacher

What do volunteers do?

Share their culture with the students, thus broadening their worldview Motivate students to take an interest in learning English

Improve students’ speaking and listening skills

Benefit Chilean Students

Participate in English Camps, Debates, Public Speaking Competitions, Spelling Bees, and other initiatives of the EODP

Lead extracurricular activities at schools


What do volunteers do?

Work independently with approximately 20 students at a time

Work in either municipal (public) or particular subvencionado (semi-private) schools, with students ages 10-18

Help Chilean English teachers practice with native speakers

Benefit Chilean Teachers and Communities

Share their culture with their host family and community


School Selection Process

1. Apply to receive a volunteer

2. EODP evaluates schools based on set criteria

3. EODP approves the school and coordinates the volunteer’s arrival

Volunteers

25 hours of English (grades 5-12) Head teacher’s level of English (minimum B1) Classroom exclusively for the use of the volunteer 2 potential host families

• Bachelor’s degree obtained in an accredited university • 21-35 years old • Native or near native English speaker • Mentally and physically capable of teaching children • Highly committed, responsible, and flexible
