“MAQUINA DE FURAR”

The walls of the Companhia Aurificia are generally made with granite stones of 50 cm thickness, put together with mortar. They have differet patterns depending on the construction period, and the most regular can be found on the exterior wall while on the interior the texture is more unregular. In the serralharia we found a wall with a different composition, with bigger stones and thickness and mixed materials: after an historical research we found out that this was the limit wall of the first phase construction. In the representative space and in the director’s house the inside walls are covered with wallpaper and wood.

The pillars of the Companhia Aurificia are made of cast iron, a very diffused material in the XIX century constructions. After a direct inspection we came to the conclusion that the pillars inside are not empty, but completely filled in cast iron.

In the Companhia Aurifica there is a huge variety of pavement composition, depending on the space function. In the exterior we found granite stones pavement in different patterns. The bigger stone block are only used to trace the tracks. In the interior there is granite in the production spaces, polished concrete coninciding with the steel tracks, and parquet in the representative space. In the director house and office there is carpet.

|RESTORATION LAB| ICad International course of Architectural Design - 2013 -

THE BIG RESET ON NEIGHBOURHOOD DESIGN

|WORKSHOP| Amsterdam School of Arts, Academy of Architecture - 2014 -

catalysts are powerful!

add onto existing structures where possible

plan strategically, not sculpturally

don‘t start building houses before you‘ve built identity

small scale building units possible housing typologies:

implement as many amenities along routes as possible

perceive humans as social individuals with a free will > offers, no obligations

use housing as main program, but increase mix of uses to max

foster social values and strengthen them againt economical building constraints

high density? / contrast of density? design according to needs instead of inventing them > anti-utopianism as our utopia

get to know the area first and learn to love it increase of mobility in our contemporary life > challenge the mobility of contemporary neighbourhood
