The garden Tisno
“Guaranteed sunshine. Chilled-out crowds. Boat parties.”
Set in a small village on the Dalmatian Coast, Soundwave is often described as not just a festival but a festival holiday: In the gorgeous Garden of Tisno on the island of Murter, Croatia, there could not be a more perfect location for a festival which hosts dub, soul, funk, reggae and electronic acts as well as hip-hop and R&B on the side. Performers this year included; Bonobo, Doom, Quantic, Riot Jazz, Submotion Orchestra and Ghostpoet to name a few. Not only does the festival provide excellent music, it creates a very special atmosphere which can be best described as an ultra relaxed vibe of hazy summer dreams. The festival is only small although growing in popularity each year due to a combination of low-cost air routes, a burgeoning dance festival culture, plus lots of sunshine, making Croatia into one of Europe‘s most attractive youth destinations.

“An inland amphitheatre for the bands, a beachside terrace for the DJs and Europe‘s best party boat make this one for sun-lovers!” – The Guardian 2010. The Garden of Tisno is nestled amongst a wooded peninsula. The festival site is an array of colourful tents, stages dusted with painted flowers, patterned bikinis and twinkling lights. Amongst the trees sit huge cushions for groups of friends to relax with a beer and enjoy the music whilst soaking up the sunshine. Whilst listening to DJs, festival goers can cool down in the clear Croatian water. There is an abundance of delicious healthy burgers and bars serving cool beers and cocktails. Tents offer a relaxing zone where massages are available, and another will paint beautiful semi permanent tattoo designs. It is small enough to be very intimate and it is very easy to forge friendships here as everyone gets into the mellow vibe of festival. Yet it is big enough to provide three stages offering different types of music and mood, creating something for everyone. Ultimately, there is not much more one could wish for at a festival, as Soundwave provides an atmosphere which is special even without the music. Once the festival is over, you don’t experience the down heartened feeling one usually does after an English festival. As you are already in Croatia the only option is to continue travelling along its beautiful coastline and to

explore some of the incredible Natural parks. Tisno sits in easy travelling distance of the stunning Coastal cities Split and Zadar, where there are even more party Islands just a boat trip away to be explored. Plitvice Lakes National park, a stunning 8km of terraced Lakes and waterfalls, coloured luminous turquoise by calcium deposits leaching into the water, is also a highly recommended trip. With Croatia offering so much more than just a festival it is guaranteed to be a truly memorable summer.

Bonobo Simon Green, AKA Bonobo, is an artist very much at the peak of his significant powers. His 2010 album ‚Black Sands‘ was the high watermark of his career to date; a masterful record, marrying Green‘s inimitable melodic genius to cutting edge electronics, bass and drums. Black Sands went on to sell over 150,000 copies worldwide, and since its release, Bonobo has toured the world with his live band, wowing audiences of thousands at a time with the hypnotic, extended live versions of the album‘s tracks. He sold out both the Roundhouse and The Forum in London, and played a 22 date US tour that took in everywhere from Ashville NC to New York City. He amassed more than 16 million recorded plays on LastFM and over 301,000 likes on Facebook. The songs ‚Kiara‘ and ‚Eyedsown‘ - both featuring the breathtaking, moving tones of Andreya Tri-
ana - have gone on to reach something approaching hit status. Now, in 2013, he stands ready to take things up yet another notch. The North Borders is another long stride forward both a natural evolution and a continuation of the electronic palette of Black Sands. Thematic, resonant, addictive and perfectly formed, it‘s a thrillingly coherent statement piece. With vocal features from no less than Erykah Badu, as well as Grey Reverend (Cinematic Orchestra) and Cornelia (Portico Quartet) it‘s another finely balanced body of work, leaving room for the beautiful, rich productions themselves to breathe and shine. Bonobo has a long history of unearthing new talent . The startling vocals of new collaborator Szjerdene are sprinkled across the North Borders,- Green has yet again found the perfect voice to enhance where he‘s at.

SubMotion Orchestra
Submotion Orchestra are one of the most interesting and exciting projects working in the UK today. Drawing upon electronica, soul, ambient electronica, jazz and dub, their unique music is at once delicate and heavy, spacious and dense, highly atmospheric but firmly rooted. Earth-shaking bass and drums combine with lush keyboard and trumpet textures to create the perfect bed for the fragile beauty of Ruby Wood’s vocals, and the celestial effects of producer Ruckspin. Demand for the band has never been greater as their reputation for staging one of the most exciting shows around grows with each appearance they make. 2013 looks to be their busiest year to date, with the band travelling to France, Poland, Russia, Turkey, Croatia, the Netherlands, the UK, Belgium and Ukraine, as well as working on their third album, which promises to show them continuing to push the boundaries and pre-conceptions of electronic music.
