the project was slightly overwhelming but it challenges you to think quick and to try to use your time as wisely as you can. Looking back on my project I felt I did an ok job trying to come up with a solution for my partner. I feel as the outcome of the project itself was creative and could be useful but when I presented the project my partner didn’t exactly think that it would be useful to her. If I could go back I would try to change the solution and try to make it more personalized for my partner in her eyes rather than making something I myself would be find useful for her particular problem.

Dot-Line.
I
had to consider the composition, the closeness of the shapes and how they would represent this emotion correctly, how I wanted the shapes to come across to the viewers and many things like that. My art tends to be sloppy and more free flowing rather than clean cut. So it was difficult for me to create this project, I knew everything had to be perfecting cut and the shapes needed to be perfectly placed in order for the viewer to at least try to guess what emotion or word I was trying to represent. When I thought of abstraction I always thought of something crazy and something hard to read. After doing this project it helped me realize that my idea of abstraction has expanded. I never thought of creating an abstract piece being so clean cut. This project definitely benefited me and helped me realize what abstraction can really be. Trying to create this project without illustrating them wasn’t too difficult as I originally imagined it to be. Although, it is a different type of art than I am used to creating when I want to make something emotionally representative, it still was fun to create this project without actually illustrating them.

Letter-Words. Hand-lettering
taught me how to really put a lot of effort in creating letterforms in order to create a beautiful word, most importantly it taught me discipline. Before creating my final works, practicing writing the same word over and over again drove me crazy but it showed me that I need to be patient and willing to put a lot of focus and effort into drawing the word “mind” perfectly enough that I would be satisfied enough. Overall I think my ideas were strong but the final project wasn’t as I planned it in my head. Sometimes when I make art, I have many ideas for one project, it’s hard for me to focus on one idea by itself and then the piece will turn into something unexpected.

Snow Monkies. I
learned during this process was that sometimes simplicity is most successful, sometimes you need to simplify your work and thats ok. When I first started to play around on photoshop I thought it was difficult to use and it was frustrating but with patience and lots of youtube tutorials, I found it fun and interesting. Everything that I learned to use in photoshop I plan to move forward and create more art with, more specifically making digital collages are most fun to me. I would definitely like to explore with more photoshop collages and also origami. I would also learn more about the snow monkey’s habitat and everyday life.

Data Viz. I wanted the focus on the value/outcomes, academics, states and countries represented and the four-year graduate guarantee. I chose to focus on these because I think those are strongest aspects of our campus. The high graduation rate and the high chance of getting a job after graduating was very appealing to me when I was a perspective high school student looking for the right college. The academics is appealing because of the student to professor ratio and the rate of professors with a Ph. D or higher degree. Although our campus is not very diverse at a glance the number of international students is unique and is a great aspect of our school.

Questions. Q: Are you called to creative work? If so, how do you recognize that calling? If not, to what do you feel called? A: Starting College, I was very unsure of the direction I would go in. I started as a business major and realized how unhappy this career would make me. I tried psychology and utterly failed in that area. I’ve always lovedpainting and drawing, I loved to create pieces for people. I think my main sense of happiness was seeing their reaction to a piece I made for them. So I took a painting course and realized this is what I want to do for life, I want to create art that is my own and that could make others just as happy as I am. Coming into this design course, it made me open my eyes that I could take my abilities to create something in art and make it into a career. I took what I learned in my previous art courses and transferred into a digit sense of work. I could most definitely see myself doing this as something I do everyday for a career and I think that is what is most important when looking for a career.
Q: What, if anything, distinguishes art and design? If you have to pick a side, which do you choose? Why? A: Art is what the starting and ending result of a work is. Design is the inbetween process. But if we are speaking metaphorically, every artist designs their work before it’s ever even finished. Altough there are differences between an artist and a designer, there are many similarites. I have always thought of an artist as a designer and designer as an artist. The finished work of both is overall a work they should be proud of. In my own terms, anything that is done in a creative process is a work of art. Design should be something that does have a flow and a movement that makes sense to the eye, I feel design work is usually something that has a targeted end goal. Where as art is something that doesn’t necessarily need a flow. Art is something that you make creativly with no restrictions. There should be no rules when making your art, you should make what your heart tells you and what it guides you to do. When picking a side, I can not pick one. I feel they are too similar to me to be able to choose a side to be one. I simply enjoy both.
