Genre: Non-Fiction Type: Travel Books (City Guides) - Paperback Brief: Many travel books tend to overload their covers with mainly images and a lot of unnecessary text. They are too complex in design. My set of city guides shows a much more simplistic and modern approach, through clean, colourful and lively designs. A cover needs to be aesthetically pleasing and should not overload people with too much information, as it is the main selling point of a book. My designs add a fresh new perspective to the usual, cluttered and mundane covers of travel books.

Rationale Symbolism: The title of each book is made from a different material to express the characteristics of each city. Tokyo is made from beads to represent the city and the neon lights. London uses crossstitching as crafts like sewing and knitting can be related back to the city’s often-cold weather. Paris shows watercolour, as the city is worldly known for its art. Each book features a small icon at the bottom of its cover – a black and white vector to represent a different attraction or landmark one might see in each city. Tokyo is known for its mountains, London with ‘Big Ben’, and Paris with the ‘Eiffel Tower’. Style: These books have a modern, bright and clean look. This simplistic approach will attract more people to them because the covers don’t disclose too much and are pleasant to look at. Viewers often are not attracted to books that give too much information on the front. By using only what is necessary, the viewer will want to know more about the book and its contents.

Typography: To represent the personality of each city, the typography is different on each cover. The typeface of Tokyo appears very ‘square’ and short to relate to technology and neon lights. Its thin stroke reflects the atmosphere in Japan - a modest and polite place. The London typeface is more striking and tall, as this city has many tall buildings and attractions to showcase. The Paris typeface is small, but bold, written in flowing script to again show that artistic and elegant feel of the city. The typography used on the spines is the same on each book to connect each as part of a set. Colour: These guides feature a unique main colour to show that each has a different topic and to represent the characteristics of each city. The Tokyo guide features a cool blue colour to relate back to the theme of technology and electricity. It also shows clarity and trust. London is bright red to represent a bold and confident city. It also relates back to the red buses, telephone boxes and guard uniforms seen in the city. Paris is a pretty pink colour to express a friendly and beautiful city. It is relevant to choose this colour as Paris is known as ‘the city of love’. These colours are featured on the spine, in the titles, and on the back cover to show unity between them.
