GREEN ROCK CO CONT O TEX EXTT Loocatedd in thee Knollwood neighborhood of West Boulder, the home was originally designed by renowned architect Charles Haertling.
APPROACH The home had seen various disjointed additions and renovations over the years. Our mission was to provide a cohesive functional design that supports the growing family’s love of entertaining.
STRATEGY Centralized circulation, an open floor plan, and modernized glazing transform this mid-century gem for true indoor/outdoor living on this special property that feels both rural and urban.
03
CONNECTION TO OUTDOORS This once long, dark, concrete hallway now opens onto a lush lawn & pool by way of plate steel columns and full height glass. Two walnut doors part at the end of the hall to reveal both a powder room and lounge space beyond.
04
SIMPLIFIED CIRCULATION One central ‘swinder’ (spiral + winder) stair ascends the entire four floors of the house, greatly simplifying the existing circulation. A smooth plaster finish and walnut wrap adorn this plate steel sculptural stair, which was craned in through the skylight opening above.
05
GROUND FLOOR PLAN
MINIMALIST SOLUTIONS Walnut slats create visual privacy between spaces, while accommodating proper air flow for HVAC and audio/visual systems. The eliminates the need for transfer grilles in doors and allows the living room tv and equipment to hide while not in use.
06
ADDITION An addition to house an office & gym office sits atop the existing buried garage. Similar in form to the existing house, the Corten fascia and extensive glazing distinguish new from old. A green roof with local plantings covers the remaining garage roof, creating a cohesive landscape.

INITIAL MASSING
MATERIALITY
Two diverging forms stack to create the building’s ’Y’ massing.
The house explores the notion of wrapping and folding: Indiana Limestone wraps up and over the building’s monolithic form and defines the property’s boundaries as low site walls. Glazing and folded wood siding peak out beyond the stone wrapper. Inside, folded wood panels adorn the hallway ceiling and form the sculptural stair.

BASKET Bent steel frames follow the contour of the adjacent roof and support a lattice of Accoya members that provide a shaded space for relaxation in the afternoon. The wood serves as both overhead shade and guardrail.

FRONT DOOR Tapered Accoya wood battens akin to the adjacent wood siding cast shadows and provide depth. Offset pivot hinge hardware is effortless and provides a grand entrance. The wood siding to the right of the door conceals a doorbird for electronic access and video surveylance.
16
ASH Ash veneer is used consistently throughout the house, giving warmth to what can sometimes be considered ‘cold modern’. A sculptural wood stair with integrated toekick light wraps into a folded wood ceiling. The kitchen casework employs an integrated Ash pull, even at the dishwasher, refrigerator drawers, and appliance garage.

MATERIALITY Modern in material execution, the home sits in quiet contemplation of its surroundings. Strategic openings reveal the expansive horizontal nature of the Southern & Western horizon. Covered patio spaces and recessed openings provide existential connection to landscape & sky. Pushing past the tree-lined mesa edge, large windows both frame the majestic mountain views to the East and bring the valley below into the home.

Basalt for the exterior walls is collected from local fields. Metal roofing is commonly used throughout town. When building in such a remote environment purposeful material selection is crucial. Utilizing thermal storage wall, thickened poche walls for storage, and deep overhangs helps to stabilize interior temperatures all year long.

50% BUILT By intermingling strips of park & museum, the program could be further integrated into the public space.
BIKE RAMP By inverting the direction of flow, this will provide clear access to the creek & encourage the public to engage in the museum’s community
PUBLIC SPACE The museum’s public space lies along the creek’s edge to maintain a strong relationship with the public circulation around the building.
PUBLIC CORRIDOR A walkway runs longitudinally along the site connecting the public, gallery, & administration program as well as facilitating access from Wazee to Wynkoop.

Driving south on Wazee, the louvers allow for a glimpse into the museum. Approaching the entrance the user can store their bicycle in the louver system + continue along the public corridor to the cafe. Adjacent to the cafe space is the bicycle shop where you can purchase, display, + maintenance bikes. The lobby hosts the entrance to the gallery spaces on the upper level as well as access to the community room + reading room. Further along the public corridor lies several sitting areas, the outdoor gallery, + entrance to administrative building.
Walking up the stairs past the lobby to the second floor, the museum user will find themselves upon the galleries. The ramp gallery cantilevers over the bike ramp and the structural glass floor reveals those on the bike ramp as display within the museum. The structural system that holds the louvers also holds shelves + displays. Before the user travels downstairs, they get a glimpse into the bicycle shop from the balcony overhead. Before leaving the gallery portion of the museum they pass through the bike shop and exit upon the public corridor.

ARTICULATION In contrast to the organic nature of wood, the base is composed of a simple and light frame of salvaged tube steel. As the steel base winds its way through the Russian Olive it becomes a notion of a back rest, encouraging a moment of rest and stillness. The continuous ribbon of steel punctures the wood in three locations: each a unique and celebrated joint.
