Design Intent

Having been part of DS6 I had the opportunity to explore more advanced features of the society we live in. Before this assignment I was always feeling infuriated by not understanding why the system is broken, not in Japan, but in other parts of the world. Having done my research I am glad to say that my understanding of different circumstances has become more tolerable, with an intent of fixing things. That being said, I now know the type of architecture I will be focusing on during my future life in the professional career. The design ethos of the studio has been a challenging environment, forcing me to think critically about the scenarios I am proposing and how I will tackle them. Japan, an illusion, a country controlled by the political suppression, has been the perfect start in my journey of understanding these particular social restrictions, especially the silenced media and the fake news. This is why, throughout my whole design, I have tried to create a place “for the people, by the people�, where everybody would feel safe from the lies in the media. The Source - my building - is therefore becoming a journey in finding the truth, a moment where people realise the effort you need to undergo to find raw and valuable information. Once reached, the truth will beat all fake news. How, when and what is covered in the project will be illustrated in the following pages of this book.

The data has been collected using NetSpot and InSSider software, by manually operating a laptop in the specified train stations. Moreover, I have traced all my movements using a GPS app to allow me to be very specific with the locations and times.

A journey of truth

My initial idea was to take the Shibuya site and try and create a spiritual journey for the users. That way, people coming from Shibuya would be curious enough to want to go inside and ascent towards the top. In my first idea, as I was not quite sure what I wanted to do, I wanted to have a tunnel that would connect the Hachiko Square to the actual building but I came to the conclusion that it was a very weak start.

CRITICAL REFLECTION ON SITE FINDINGS

Site Analysis Observations After conducting a thorough analysis I have discovered that Shibuya is a very important part of the central Tokyo Infrastructure. With 2.4 million passengers on an average weekday, Shibuya proved to be one of the most targeted space for advertising and Wifi connections. Shibuya is in continuous development, which is why old buildings will have to be replaced or reinforced as per the medium earthquake risk. As Shibuya is a popular spot, it is no stranger to high rise skyscrapers. However, what I seemed to notice, these new buildings looked very similar to one another, mostly straight angles and boxed forms. I want my building to stand out, to become a proper billboard building so it can represent Shibuya and become part of the Tokyo Skyline, as per Shibuya’s vibrant and colourful atmosphere. Which is why, my first idea of a building would be represented by a skyscraper, a tall building meant to attract and inform. As a first take on the site, I want to create a form of access directly from Hachiko Square, so that the people who come here either from the Shibuya Crossing or directly from the station would want to go inside the new proposed building. I have visited The Tokyu Department store, during the field trip in Japan, only to discover a rather normal shop. The most important aspect of it was that it was a direct access to Ginza Line terminal, which I can integrate within my design. As a start, I want to demolish part of the building and therefore keep the platform terminal. Since one of my first ideas developed in first semester was to create some sort of a news square on the top of the building, I needed to be considerate of how to achieve most daylight on that platform, as well as “shield” the building’s users from the tall neighbouring Shibuya Scramble Skyscraper. The challenge starts now, where I want to explore how to achieve a “truth” building and what is the best idea for a layout for this particular “pilgrimage of truth” building.

CCTV - China - Precedent Study

I then looked at the CCTV China arrangement. It was a good precedent as it gave me an idea how NOT to do it, purely because the building has a way of keeping everything inside. This is the type of building that was built for the reasons I did my research, which is to be able to control the media, where there are more private spaces that public circulation. It did give me a very good understanding of how the spaces connect to each other and what are the main facilities in a media environment.

Japan 2050: Belief, Trust, Truth I took the symbol and had a play with it, resulting in 3 different towers and therefore respecting my ideology

Triquetra denotes a particular complicated shape formed of three vesicae piscis (the leaf-like shape in between two equal diameter circles each centred on the circumference of the other). Also known as a “Trinity Knot” when parallel doubled-lines are in the graph, the design is used as a religious symbol adapted from ancient Pagan Celtic images by Christianity. The triquetra has been a known symbol in Japan called Musubi Mitsugashiwa. In Japan, it is the design of a tomoe, interpreted as a ‘wishing’ or a ‘hoping’, that was used on family crests comes very close to resembling a triquetra in form. In Japan both the Triquetra and Tomoe are used as kamon, a sort of heraldic coat of arms (ka means ‘family’ and mon means ‘crest’). The Triquetra symbol is used for the Musubi mitsugashiwa crest. While the use of familial crests is virtually dead today, except in select aristocratic circles, the design often finds its way into corporate logos. The most common representation are triple whorls known as mitsudomoe. It is also the logo of the major Japanese automobile manufacturer, Mitsubishi. Mon (紋), also monshō (紋章), mondokoro (紋所), and kamon (家紋), are Japanese emblems used to decorate and identify an individual, a family, or (more recently) an institution or business

entity.

What is a Server? - Integration of Heating Solutions for making fake news tangible

Hot aisle/cold aisle is a layout design for server racks and other computing equipment in a data centre. The goal of a hot aisle/cold aisle configuration is to conserve energy and lower cooling costs by managing air flow.

Hot & Cold Aisles

Fake News becomes tangible by having servers placed on the accommodation floors. Therefore, people who stay here temporarily, that came in the building to make a change in the first place, will therefore be pushed to act when their thermal comfort is affected, due to the servers reaching high temperatures (up to 45*C) because of the algorithm that collects fake news data across the country. The people would then be forced to tackle it by having contra-discussions, meetings, public speeches, press conferences, etc. Each and every one of the people brings to the plate a different set of skills (lecturers, journalists, teachers, digital media expert, etc.) that would work in teams to tackle fake news.

Concept Development CRITICAL REFLECTION ON FIRST ITERATION

THE PIXEL PRINCIPLE

Facade Pixel Principle - The further you are the clearer it gets - LEDs

As my design journey was just beginning, my first exploration was that of creating “a building of truth”. I did not know exactly what it meant at the start of this iteration. Unfortunately, I do not believe I have managed to achieve a good interpretation of truth within my building. My first idea was that of creating 3 towers, as per my triangle information as a truth symbol. I have tried to arrange 3 extruded triangles on the site and that allowed me to understand the overall challenges within the site. Programme wise, I had a go at what the building could be and how it can represent fake news. I did however miss important aspects such as circulation, access and, obviously, symbolism. I did come across the Data Centre hot & cold isles and I wanted to integrate it from an architectural point of view, as I firmly believe this idea has not been used previously for ventilation or making the content on the racks tangible, which I found very interesting. Circulating vertically through a sea of lights coming from the servers inspired me to think about future, but also to think about the implications data can have. I have indeed started to create a different building, that would not resemble the existing ones surrounding the chosen Shibuya Station site. I experimented with straight lines but at non-traditional angles, looking at cantilevering effects and positioning my news square on top. Shibuya station, however, gave me an opportunity to create a different type of facade, a moving pixel facade using LEDs, as advertising purposes, but for fake news indexes. Consequently, I did not manage to achieve the impression of “TRUTH” within the building, which is why, from now on, I need to focus on discovering the meaning and forms of truth, as well as look at Japanese symbolism and representation for truth. I need to look at curvier forms, undulating spirals, as the truth is not straight and is sometimes a hard to swallow pill. I do however want to retain the following: • A news square on top • An access from Hachiko Square • 3 towers in a triangular arrangement • Overall triangle inspiration • Data Centres & Tangibility of Fake News (Hot & Cold Isles) • Vertical Circulation through the servers for a unique atmosphere (Seeing the Data) • An LED moving facade that would inform the passers-by at all times.

Japanese Symbolism for Truth, Purity, Enlightenment

Japanese Symbolism for Truth, Purity, Enlightment Moon-viewing is an aesthetic custom in Japan with a spiritual component. Buddhism: the full moon is a symbol of enlightenment or truth, and the phases of the moon indicative of the ever-changing nature of life. Shinto: the moon is a symbol of the wonder, beauty and awe of natural phenomenon

Yata no Kagami - the sacred mirror

An emperor’s abdication and accession will involve deeply symbolic Shinto ceremonies, and central to them will be three objects - a mirror, a sword and a gem - known as the Imperial Treasures or Regalia. The origins and whereabouts of the mysterious objects are shrouded in secrecy, but myths about them are peppered throughout Japanese history and pop culture. The mirror, which may be more than 1,000 years old, is believed to be kept at the Ise Grand Shrine in Mie prefecture. In Japanese folklore, mirrors are said to have divine power and to reveal truth. In the imperial ceremonies, Yata no Kagami - or eight-sided mirror - represents the wisdom of the emperor. In Shinto, the mirror is closely associated with the sun goddess Amaterasu. It’s said, she was startled at seeing her own face in a mirror, and that very same mirror has a name. Called Yata-no-Kagami, it is one of three “Imperial Regalia” alongside a celestial sword and curved jewel, all handed down through the line of emperors as ‘proof’ of their ‘divine’ descent.

Japanese Symbolism for Truth, Purity, Enlightenment

Japanese Symbolism for Truth, Purity, Enlightment Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto is the Japanese god of the moon, a proud but violient deity of order and beauty. The estranged husband of the sun goddess Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi spends eternity chasing her across the sky after he killed the food goddess. The movement of Sun and Moon represent a change constant, which is also a truth symbol in Japanese mithology. Therefore, the new building will have sun and moon motifs - Sun during the day, moon during the night (full moon - the absolute truth)

The character for Truth (çœ&#x; makoto) was originally written as a pictograph of a kettle, or container with legs, which held something of value. Today the character makoto means sincerity, as well as truth.

One of the oldest folktales in Japan is the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, the story of Kaguya Hime, the Bamboo Princess. She was never completely of this world. She longed for her real Heavenly place of origin, the moon. Her eyes filled with tears whenever she gazed at the full moon, which is also a symbol of Truth in Japanese legend.

Fig 13: Bamboo Cutter For this particular project, the story fits quite nicely: People need a safe haven, they need to go back to where they came from, they look at the moon, follow the moon and rejoice with their origins, roots, with their SOURCE. Basically people look at the moon in search of the truth, therefore the motif of the building becomes somehow inspired from Lunar beliefs (Light, texture, rotation, change)

CRITICAL REFLECTION ON SECOND ITERATION

Further Development Having looked more in depth at Japanese mythologies and symbolism I have come across multiple significations of truth. One of the most important findings was the spiral, that represents a journey, a pilgrimage of some sort which is exactly what I want to achieve for my final design. I want first comers to undergo a spiritual journey through the building, a modern pilgrimage where they can see throughout the whole design what fake news is, how it impacts the world, how much storage it needs, and how many people work to fight against it. It has to be a big impact at a first glance. For this reason, I believe that the circulation (vertical elevators) should be on the inside of the building, going through a huge void. I did not take account for how many people the building could have in this final iteration which is why I need to start looking at putting more elevators in and making them a core of the building, structurally and metaphorically. Looking more into the truth signification I have come across the moon and spheres and curved designs. However, after seeing the result, I am not quite keen on the sphere idea so I need to start looking at other ways of representing light throughout the design, at other ways of creating an LED facade to achieve 360 visibility. A clearly defined void through the middle, perhaps, would allow for more visibility and more interaction in between floors. One aspect I want to look at for the next iteration is how I will recreate the programme and how I will divide all the extents for creating The Source. I have parted from the idea of having three singular towers as I believe a building divided in three triangles defined by a void in the middle would achieve a bigger effect at catching the attention of the visitors. Participant would have a defined journey while visitors would have another based on experience and the idea of making them want to come back daily for their news intake and fake news indexes. Things I have found important and willing to explore further: • A spiral building that represents the journey (to the news square in this case) • A billboard building effect • A singular tower divided into 3 triangle by a huge void inside (As per Leeza Soho) • Curved forms that tackle reflection, the moon and the sun • Glazing Elements that would reflect particular qualities while creating transparency through the void (I need to be careful here not to create a building that would resemble the surrounding ones - business centres covered in glass)

CRITICAL REFLECTION ON THIRD ITERATION

Third Iteration Learnings As per previous iteration, I have worked on creating a void defined by 3 triangles and curving forms. My design started to represent something more than just some floor plates when I added the main structural exterior columns. These would reinforce the spiral rotation and therefore be seen from the exterior as an ascension to the top. However, I did create the columns with angles too step to be able to withstand the structural load without having to add extra bracing that would ruin the overall elegant form. Next step is definitely to try and simplify the form, while trying to maintain an elegant spiral that would define the journey towards truth from both outside and inside. I did notice that having a central core of elevators would not be as efficient so I want to find a different approach to positioning the access within the building. In addition, the more work I put in defining the access strategy and trying to ease the visitor’s ascension in the building I kept finding the existing Ginza Station Platform building (Tokyu Department Store) challenging to redefine. I will therefore plan to remove it from the context if I can prove the building is old and it does need alterations. For the next iteration I want to explore more a new way of creating a main entrance while relocating the shops within Tokyu Department Store, but also altering the Shibuya Square by creating an exit from Shibuya Station right through the proposed building. Things I have learnt from this iteration and want to maintain: • The structural columns that define the edges of the building • New spiral ascension to the top form (that still needs work) • The Void through the middle (unfortunately circulation is still not defined)

TRIQUETRA AND THE NUMBER OF 3

SPIRALLING AROUND THE CORE MEANING

Kagami Mirror have a plant-based thread that wraps around their bronze handle

Three is a very sacred number in many religions, Shinto included. According to Japanese mythology, the first beings to exist in the Universe were three kami born out of the nothing. In the story of Izanagi and Izanami, Izanagi washed away his impurities in the river Hi and his three most renowned children were born; Amaterasu-Omikami – the Sun kami, Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto – the moon kami and Susanoo-no-Mikoto – the sea (and later natural disaster) kami. The Imperial Regalia of Japan are also three items: A sword, a jewel and a mirror.

The Spiral is a sacred symbol that represents the journey and change of life as it unfolds; taking a labyrinth-like passage that leads to Source. The spiral symbol can represent the consciousness of nature beginning from its centre expanding outwardly. Spirals have been linked to nature, the seasons, and the path of life: birth, growth, death and reincarnation.

Number 3 is a Sacred number, found not only in nature and religion but in mathemathics as well.

Tomoe, (巴 or 鞆絵, とも) is a Japanese symbol that is widely accepted as the symbol of Shinto. The mitsu-domoe is the version usually used as a symbol in Shinto, with three being a sacred number. In Shinto, the mitsu-domoe is mostly used and commonly represents the interaction and union of the cosmic forces that make up the Universe. These can be seen as The High Plain of Heaven – Takama-ga-hara (฀฀฀), the Earth and the Underworld, or as Heaven, Earth and Man. The spaces in between the commas can represent the unknown dimensions – those parts of existence that dwell between the physical and spiritual. The mitsu-domoe represents a life cycle which never ends, a constant moving forward of energy and regrowth, the philosophy of Shinto itself. In short, a spiritual journey of finding the truth.

Intercity Tower in Tel Aviv by Miloslavsky Architects, measuring 400 meters in height, the 100-floor Intercity Tower has some exterior curved columns that have inspired my project. The main difference is that for the Source these columns would be structural as well, having less twists in their core. It does however emphasize the edge in a very elegant way

Railway Terminal - Evolution

The railway station of the future will be a place with multiple functions and the most frequent and close interaction with people. Here, the spacious atrium accommodates all incidents: the “welcome” ring reminds the departing passengers that they will start a wonderful journey, and also welcomes every visitor to Xi’an. This is the new gateway symbol of the ancient capital. The ground floor is distributed with hotels, businesses and offices. Everyone shares the space and the atrium sunlight. As I had the Ginza Line going through my building, this only gave me more reasons to design the void atrium so that people coming on the platform would have a good feel of the dimensions of the building at the first step of their journey through the building. This also convinced me that I have to re-design the station, as the existing building I initially wanted to keep partially, would not suffice for creating a unique moment. 130

Shenzhen Luohu Friendship Trading centre Shenzhen Luohu Friendship Trading centre is a redevelopment of a current department store to be transformed into a skyscraper with a 7-storey retail podium at the heart of Shenzhen, China. Designed by Aedas, the design takes reference from forms occurring in nature (flowers, plants, curves, etc.). THE POWER OF GREEN SCREEN

Green Screen - Turning a simple yet boring element into architecture

The uses of the green screen are no strangers to reporters, cameramen, video editors, actors and film producers. However, it has never been anything more than a room with a green fabric and multiple lights. The green screen in The Source is actually formed by the gentle curvature of roofs, becoming a structure element. People (visitors) can walk above and see through the secondary void how people are posing and see in real time what gets post processed on computers. The images filmed here are also the ones that end up on the LED facade, Green screens sadly can be a weapon in the production of fake news. The Source tends to teach and educate people that green screens should be used for passing the information, not altering it.

The Green screen in the source is visible from the outside, using curtains when the light becomes too destructive for the recording. However, the powerful lights used inside should be able to counteract on the exterior light.

CRITICAL REFLECTION ON FINAL ITERATION

Towards a final project... The fourth and final iteration proved to be the most challenging yet the most entertaining one. I have looked into all aspects that would define my building, starting with flattening the curve of the structural columns and adding more structure. I have ended up with a more defined shape. I wanted the news square to benefit from daylight but also be shielded from the Shibuya Scramble building, therefore I have cut the 3 towers at a 30 degrees angle, creating the basis of a news square. I have looked into news elements such as news studios, control rooms, data analysis, technology, data centres storage, and temporary accommodation. I have divided the building into 3 main areas: • Temporary Accommodation located next to the data centres to make fake news tangible and visible • Teaching Grounds - a place where people would get informed on how to get informed, as well as teach future generations how to present and create trusted news • The office grounds, alongside the News Square on the top - a place where content is created (Green Screens, Innovation Rooms, Studios, News Live Filming, etc.). I have recreated the previous Hachiko square by relocating the statue, adding a pocket park and rebuilding the department store in a more modern way, that would benefit the access towards the source. I have integrated the Ginza Line terminal as a more prominent metaphor for start and end of a journey towards truth. I have made the void more visible by positioning the cores (elevators) on each side of the triangle floor plates, not altering the visibility through the void right from the reception space. I looked into various ways of construction including cross bracing, tension chords, space frames, C channels attached to the columns, column connections, composite floor slabs, reinforced concrete floors and other systems that would allow for my building to come to life. I looked for precedents for billboard buildings with LED façades and I found a system (both structural and physical) to create a moving facade that would inform on fake news indexes. The new forms of the facade allowed me to emphasize the void and altering the daylight levels that would come through the etfe panels located on the side of each triangle floor plate. The columns meet in the middle to resist building load. I have also looked more into how to make a proper billboard building - I added a ring of light that would be seen through the sky, but would also act as a structural element by keeping the structural columns in place. I have duplicated the idea on the lower part of the building to reinforce the columns and their placement in the foundation. The next step, after clearly defining all these spaces, the necessary furniture and activities is to make each of the area to respond to its requirements, to animate and activate the building, put in context and create a true media and news atmosphere from the very beginning of the journey (reception) towards the news square, as at the moment I feel that my renders do not show what the whole idea is, they look like normal spaces, designed within a normal building, and not a building whose purpose is to redefine media, alter the fake news indexes and create new generations of journalists, as well as people that know their sources.

A new(s) icon for the Tokyo Skyline Iconic buildings, Landmarks, Tourist attractions - these are the elements for a proper skyline of a major city. The Source becomes all of them being backed up by a powerful argument - that of changing the way news are being delivered in Japan, decreasing the fake news index, and educating future generations into being vigilant with their sources, as well as inspiring people to do what is right.

By having approx. 200m in height, The Source is visible not only because of its height, but also because of the ring light and illuminated LED facade. During the night, The Source is a beacon, an element of attraction. During the day, because of the loud streaming through loudspeakers, it becomes a meeting point, a daily news source, a landmark. Being backed up by Shibuya itself, incorporating the Shibuya Crossing and Hachiko square, even more cultural value is added to the project.

In a sea of block buildings, traditional skyscrapers and Traditional Japanese architecture, The Source is unique in its shape, slightly a more complicated building than normal, a breath of “fresh air�, like the news in 2050 should be - a new hope for the people. The Source therefore becomes not a needle in a haystack, but a grandiose symbol of Tokyo, one that has to be seen, Truth be told...

CRITICAL REFLECTION ON FINAL PROPOSAL In a not too distant future, Tokyo’s media integrity is being compromised by a fake news environment. Now, in 2050, all news manipulate and create political propaganda. Tokyo is an illusion. The Source, an NGO headquarters for restoring the press credibility in Japan, becomes a beacon building in the middle of popular Shibuya Ward, creating a safe environment of research and news for the visitors and participants of the building. The building’s purpose is to educate and guide the future generations into being vigilant with their sources, by becoming a “live building”, projecting content on the façades of the building and on the screens within the created spaces. The structure has been designed to allow for full transparency and 360 visibility, using curved elements and glazing, altering the typical block buildings skyline of Tokyo, and therefore becoming a symbol of Truth. The fake news is made tangible and visible by having data servers throughout the void of the building, and colour schemes that represent the fake news indexes. The News Square on the top of the building is meant to be part of a pilgrimage of truth, becoming a meeting point for the people who come to absorb the daily truthful news.

I would like to begin by saying... What an amazing personal “journey” this has been. This project allowed me to research issues that had an impact on me and my political views. Being Romanian, tackling a corrupt political system has always been a centre of my interest. Discovering the issues in Japan gave me the opportunity of becoming an expert in the field of fake news and political propaganda. This project has opened my horizon, and in the current issues we have experienced with COVID-19, I managed to remain focused on the news that matters, by having knowledge of the fake news environment. It has therefore become a part of my daily life, a part which I have put in the project for my final year of MArchD. As for the design, I have encountered numerous challenges, which I have tried to resolve by altering geometries and researching different aspects of Japanese culture. I believe that the building stands out in the Tokyo Skyline, becoming a true symbol of Shibuya and a powerful addition to the Tokyo Skyline. In my findings, I have unfortunately reached the conclusion that fake news cannot be stopped. Once it reaches the online environment, it cannot be erased. Someone, somewhere has seen it and stored it somewhere on a data server. Which is what I have tried to accomplish by making fake news visible and tangible. I firmly believe that the colour scheme and lights (using the ring light and the LED facade), as well as the unique and slightly complicated shape of the building adds value to Shibuya and stands out, optimising the way fake news can be fought against. Fake news cannot be stopped, it can however be pointed out and disproven to the point where its source loses it power. You cannot control everything that gets posted, you can, however, change the minds of people, educate them, and emphasize the importance of source checking. Open minded people, leaders, powerful minds that cannot be manipulated, these are the people that stood at the creation of the source, wanting to make a change in a very challenging Japan 2050. Another challenge I had was working with such a heavy file. I had to be very efficient with the objects included within the project, which is why everything was designed to fit and point out the important aspects for each area. I have used Revit for creating The Source, Photoshop for post processing and Lumion for rendering. Although Lumion is popular for being “easy to use” it is not the reason for my preference. Lumion was the only software that allowed me to create a lively feeling of lights and lit screens, making my renders look as real as possible, which is exactly what I wanted to achieve: Truth. Truth in representation, truth in speaking and truth in design. Having said my final thoughts, I end this paragraph by saying how grateful I am for this opportunity where I had to challenge myself into creating a challenging piece of work.

It is now Tokyo 2060. The fake news index has decreased significantly. Congratulations. 338
