The Cyprus Theatre Organisation (TH.O.C.) was founded by law in 1971 with the aim of promoting theatrical art in Cyprus and aiding cultural links with other countries. The creation of the Cyprus Theatre Organisation was the result of the government’s efforts to create a state theatre after Independence in 1960 from British colonial rule. TH.O.C. is administered by a nine-member Board of Directors, appointed by the Council of Ministers for a period of three years. The Director of the Organisation is appointed by the Board of Directors for a period of five years and his appointment is approved by the Council of Ministers. An Artistic Committee makes recommendations to the Board of Directors on issues concerning the Organisation’s repertory. The Organisation employs 23 actors on a regular basis and works with many internationally acclaimed directors, scenographers, composers, choreographers and actors. During its 35 years of operation, the Cyprus Theatre Organisation has staged more than 330 plays from the ancient Greek, the classical and modern repertory as well as plays by Greek and Cypriot playwrights. TH.O.C. operates four separate stages: a Main Stage, New Stage, Experimental and Children’s stage and on average a total of eleven to twelve new productions are presented each year. The Cyprus Theatre Organisation has toured abroad extensively giving performances in Great Britain, Germany, Bulgaria, Russia, Egypt, Greece, the USA, Poland, China, Denmark. Since 1980, TH.O.C. participates at the annual Epidaurus Festival in Greece, with plays form the Ancient Greek Drama repertory. At the same time, the Cyprus Theatre Organisation via its Development Department, fulfills the important role of initiator and promoter of the art of theatre which is achieved in a number of ways including the subsidisation of theatres, the organisation of theatre seminars, playwriting competitions, symposiums and annual competitions for amateur drama groups as well as school drama clubs, the building of new and the renovation of old theatre buildings. Furthermore, it financially supports theatres of Cypriot communities abroad.
