ANNA HARGAN
Throughout my life and my work, I live to discover what’s below the surface, to the core of the problems presented. Understanding the nature of a problem is necessary in order to provide powerful solutions that transform experiences, capture significance, and strengthen the quality of life through architectural design. My work seeks to capture the spirit of each project through carefully researched, proficiently calculated, and elaborately detailed designs. The selected work you will observe will present a range of problems primarily explored through projects in Cincinnati, Ohio. Being the city I spent my academic career within, Cincinnati is a unique historical, cultural, and social environment where a wide variety of projects can be addressed as the development of the city continues to grow. Ranging from addressing large-scale urban design to small-scale facade design, this collection of work embodies a high level of care and dedication to providing relevant, experiential, and innovative design solutions.

Thesis | Liz Riorden & Michael McInturf | University of Cincinnati, OH
Brutalist architecture and associated buildings are endangered, with many of these structures facing demolition worldwide. Given society’s push to achieve a more sustainable future, we can no longer rely on demolition to get rid of our problems. By understanding the concepts of value, permanence, obsolescence, and preservation, innovative design solutions can challenge the widespread endangerment of buildings. In the case for Crosley Tower, a concrete high rise associated with Brutalism, on the University of Cincinnati’s campus in Cincinnati, Ohio, demolition is soon approaching. Innovative methods of transformation, preservation, and demolition will alter the structures identity and provide hybridized solutions that challenge its unique existence.

Fall 2020 | Andrew Tetrault| Over the Rhine, Cincinnati, OH
This project aims to capture the process of the art of masonry. By focusing on the unearthing qualities of masonry materials paired with rekindling Over the Rhine's historical footprints, this design provides the historical neighborhood with an homage to its historical context while providing innovative methods for materiality. As a museum entry sequence and experience was important to consider. This proposal looks at blurring the line between building entry and city corner.

Spring 2020 | Whitney Hamaker | Northside, Cincinnati, OH AIA Cincinnati CRAN Awards | Student Award | 2020 This project is one solution that came out of an affordable housing research studio. The research was conducted to address the best circumstances and options for affordable housing in Cincinnati's historical neighborhood of Northside. This design focuses on providing a comfortable, interactive home that looks to blur the line between the front and back of the traditional home by pushing bedrooms to the front of the house and living spaces to the back as a result of natural daylighting and desired privacy.

This project provides a housing and community solution for a historical yet aging community of Greenhills, Ohio, one of the three Greenbelt Towns built as a New Deal program during the Great Depression. As a historically rich community but with limited community resources, this design looks at additions to an existing shopping center to establish a stronger public center where housing options and community culture are established.

This project combines dynamic architecture with an adaptive row house. The design proposes the use of three dynamic units which can provide more interior or exterior space depending on the program use and environmental qualities. Seeking to embody a truly adaptable home where interaction, connection, and adjustability create a home true to the breadth of events that happen within,

This project addresses an existing fossil park's condition as it is located in the vicinity of a manufacturing zone without any interventions to bring awareness to the archaeological site. This design for a welcome center takes into account the experience of the visitor while utilizing natural materiality and fossil-influenced form. A majority of visitors are young children on field trips so tours and programs are available to educate and generate a positive experience.

This project captures the poetic dynamics of the typical street corner. This design values experience of space generated through the materiality and complexity of interior and exterior spaces in relationship with the poetics of the street corner. The site is in Cincinnati's historic neighborhood Over the Rhine adjacent to Washington Park and Music Hall. The poetry foundation establishes communitybased events and resources for the youth and adults of the Over the Rhine community.
