The digital handshake - make your first impression Dubbed “the new handshake,” professional headshots are now the first introduction to you, your business and your personal brand. Shouldn’t that intro be the best it can be? With 93% of HR professionals and recruiters tapping into LinkedIn to find quality candidates, plus 2 in 3 on Facebook and more than half utilizing Twitter, that headshot has countless applications in your professional life!

You need a powerful, compelling, and confidencebuilding headshot Should your profile pic be the family vacation, the fun night out, or worse; the logo or abstract shot? Or should it be a powerful, compelling and confidence-building headshot that makes prospective clients, employers and partners want to click “Connect”?

PORTRAIT

Before heading in to the studio, think about all of the things that make up your personal brand, and what you want others to take away from your profile page. Jot down some key words and phrases, and bring them to your shoot. Think about what exemplifies your personal brand to you. Are you a chef? An educator? A writer? Are there props that could help tell your story? Bring them along!

We can take a couple different shots in different outfits —so you’ll have a series to choose from. You may want to tailor your profile picture based on the social media platform you’re using. Remember to have fun! A relaxed, comfortable “you” will naturally exude confidence.

It’s important that your look matches the image you’re trying to convey. What you wear on a daily basis is a great place to start. Solid colors are always a good choice, as are tops with strong collars and necklines. Even though you’ll only be shot from the shoulders up, it’s important you’re pulled together from head to toe. You may want a shot or two that are pulled back a bit. Aim for clothes that complement your skin and eye tones, and steer clear of bold colors.

When is the right time to update my headshot?

When you should replace your headshot depends on a lot of different factors, including your profession, age and goals. A general corporate rule of thumb is every two years.

shots are frequently what your customers or potential employers see first, and you want this image to reflect who you are, right now.

well-versed in ways to subtly alter your photograph to make the image truly reflect the appearance you would like.

I recommend changing your headshot if you change your hair color or cut drastically, for instance from blonde, to black or brown. You want people to be able to recognize YOU as you currently are.

If you are in a creative or performance based field, updating your headshots should be done every year or for each tryout. You want your headshot to show your range, and you can tailor your images to each role your are trying to land.

For instance, changing my camera angle can either make you look powerful and in charge, or warm and friendly. As your portrait professional, I will work with you to capture the essence of who you are, personally and professionally.

It’s also essential to update your headshot if you gain or lose a significant amount of weight - anything over 30 pounds. Head-

My amazing team of hair and makeup artists can create a look just for you that will highlight your best features. Professional hair and makeup can change how you look on camera, and my artists know exactly how to achieve any number of professional looks and will work with you to obtain one that’s right for you.

eadshot sessions generally last about 90 minutes, with 45 minutes of that being in hair and makeup. Because the camera sees things in two dimensions, and our eyes see things three dimensionally, there is a difference between what you see in the mirror, and what you will see in a photograph. My team of artists have been trained in how to properly apply makeup and style hair for the best results in your images. This typically means your makeup is about 30% darker than you would wear to the office, and more styling is done to the front and top of your hair than the back. These amazing ladies also take what you have brought to wear into consideration when applying your makeup, and styl-

ing your hair. In order to really have a cohesive look, all elements of your photograph should match. My team and I will combine your professional ambitions with your own unique personality and style, to create images that capture the best of who you are. After you leave hair and makeup, you will be in the studio for 3045 minutes, and have up to three outfit and background changes. I suggest a solid light color background, a mottled midrange background, and a solid darker color. This will give you many options for each platform you wish to use your images on. Facebook images tend to look better with lighter backgrounds, while images on Linkedin and other trade publications favor darker backgrounds.

of your session, don’t use any products with sunscreen

before your session. That ensures enough time for your skin to rest.

as they can make your face look white for the camera.

Hair

Bring a hand moisturizer with you, a fresh application before your session will help your skin look supple. Avoid lotions with tanning agents or sunscreens.

If you are going to get a cut or color, do so at least a week in advance as your hair cut will look it’s best after a week of the cut. It will also give you time to correct any color issues that could arise.

The best thing to do for your skin is drink at least 8 glasses of wa-

you won’t have white streaks on your outfits when you change.

Wear a clear deodorant instead of the white powder kind so that

Drinking alcohol the night prior to your session can make your skin puffy and blotchy. Don’t try any new products the week prior to your session as they can cause redness and breakouts.

Nail Polish

And finally, breathe and relax! You’ll have a great time.

If you are going to paint your nails, any classic color will look amazing and won’t date your images. Make sure it’s chip free and cleanly done.
