Autumn/ Winter 2014

Accusations fly, old loyalties are ripped apart and no-one's innocence can be taken for granted.

A West Yorkshire Playhouse Production

This is without doubt one of the greatest plays of the 20th Century. Arthur Miller's The Crucible is as powerful and relevant now as when it was first staged in 1953. This gripping thriller takes over the epic Quarry stage this autumn as baseless accusations transform into all-consuming terror.

@wyplayhouse #wypcrucible

Reeling from the wild allegations of a group of teenage girls, a small American town is hit by a wave of uncontrollable social paranoia. When Elizabeth Proctor is arrested it seems the madness must surely stop. But with hysteria waging, who will have the courage to look the devil in the eyes and face the truth alone? Directed by James Brining

Imagine a world where you can only go out after dark, where you feel a constant hunger for human blood but where for all eternity you will appear young and beautiful. Welcome to the world of Dracula. A creature who should inspire repulsion in every living thing but who has seduced countless generations, Bram Stoker’s legendary vampire lives on in this extraordinary ballet. The dark tale of the immortal Count is played out through Northern Ballet’s unique blend of sensuous dancing, gripping theatre and gothic sets and costumes. If you think you know what to expect from ballet, think again. This is ballet with a dramatic bite that will leave you thirsty for more. Don’t miss your chance to experience it.

Ruby Wax Sane New World Presented by Lakin McCarthy 14 September, Quarry Theatre, 7.30pm, Tickets £20, Age 16+

Mark Thomas Cuckooed Presented by Lakin McCarthy 21 October, Courtyard Theatre, 7.45pm, Tickets £16

Ruby Wax is a much loved US born comedian, actor and writer based in the UK. Sane New World shows us how to rewire our thinking to find calm in a frenetic world and how to become the master, not the slave, of our own minds. This show is your passport to saner living. She might not be sane herself but she does a pretty good imitation.

A comedy of betrayal. Mark Thomas tells his true story of how Britain's biggest arms manufacturer (BAE Systems) came to spy on a comedian. A tale of hubris, planes, demos and undercover deceit told by an award-winning performer.

Tim Key Single White Slut 13 October, Courtyard Theatre 8pm, Tickets £15, Age 16+

Tommy Tiernan Presented by Mick Perrin Worldwide Ltd 31 October, Courtyard Theatre, 8.30pm, Tickets £15, Age 15+

Key (37 now) climbs into his poetry clothes and leans against his mic stand. He will recollect simple tales of love, gaze dead-eyed at the ladies, recite verse and do basic talking. A lot of fairly grubby water’s sloshed under Key’s bridge so he’ll be churning that up. Edinburgh Comedy Award Winner and star of the film Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa

A legend in Ireland, Tommy outsells any other Irish comic. Tiernan’s mastery of stand-up allows him to take risks other comedians dare not. Through hilarious story telling and a high energy, nonapologetic delivery he is continually challenging his audience who can be confident they are in safe hands.

“A comic tale of a man not doing King Lear” Acclaimed classical actor Edward Petherbridge rehearsed for the role of King Lear – then a major stroke left him barely able to move. As he struggled to recover, he made a discovery: the entire role of Lear still existed word for word in his mind. After its critically acclaimed sell out run in 2013, Told by an Idiot are delighted to be bringing back My Perfect Mind. Directed by Kathryn Hunter and performed by Edward Petherbridge and Paul Hunter, this is a moving and comic exploration of the resilience of the human spirit through the prism of Shakespeare’s great tragedy. There is a live speech-to-text performance on 17 October. Created by Told by an Idiot. Enjoy a spectacular celebration of family and friendship this Christmas as the Playhouse present a brand-new production of Irving Berlin’s White Christmas. Nikolai Foster, the director of the Playhouse’s smash-hit Annie, returns to direct this fantastically festive show. It’s December 1944 and song and dance duo Captain Bob Wallace and Private Phil Davis are entertaining General Waverly’s troops. Ten years later and they’re major stars planning a Christmas in the Sunshine State, but first Davis wants to check out the talented Haynes sisters, Judy and Betty. For Phil and Judy it’s love at first sight, but Betty and Bob don’t quite see eye to eye, so a plot is hatched to get them together, train tickets are swapped and they head for the winter wonderland of Vermont. Only when they arrive there’s a heat-wave, the Columbia Inn is about to go bust and its owner, none other than General Waverly, is in trouble. Can these stars, along with their song and dance troop friends, help save the day and give everyone the perfect Christmas present? Filled to the brim with much-loved songs such as Sisters, Blue Skies, I’ve Got My Love To Keep Me Warm and White Christmas, it’s the Christmas show you’ve been dreaming of. But when you come here, you see people that are the same as you and together we go to places that we never dreamt of going to." Participant in our project for people living with dementia "Asmarina voices is a very wonderful project, I have formed a family by singing with lovely people I meet and it made me forget my stress and put laughter on my face." Participant in our Refugee & Asylum Seeker project "West Yorkshire Playhouse is hugely important to the city of Leeds and has built both a national and an international reputation. I am proud both to represent it and to be a patron of First Floor which has done so much to involve young people and bring out their talent." Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP
