crush: a serious hobby
PERSONAL PROJECT (2011) Book Cover and Layout (Sample) When Richard Siken’s poetry book won the Yale Younger Poet’s award, a good number of the poems from the collection became free to read online. My layout and illustration design for Crush attempts to mirror the erratic and anti-narrative writing of Siken, a chracteristic that is most obvious in the structure of his verse. Gridliines are extremely close to the margin, to allow the structural format of the poems to be faithful to the original. For the cover I used high contrast and dramatic cuts in line and form to depict thematic images that give a subtle hint at the love, destruction, and sexual content in the text. I made use of the Bell Gothic fonts for both headers and body texts. For headers, Bell Gothic Std, a sans serif font with sharp diagonals brought out the modern look of the book. It’s serif predecessor, Bell Gothic, was a humanist font developed in the mid1900s specifically designed for the ease of reading.

introducing kona coffee
HONOLULU COFFEE 2012 Honolulu, Hawaii USA Brand Touchpoints Honolulu Coffee is an award-winning coffee company that is known for its artisan roasts of Kona coffee beans from the Big Island of Hawaii. In 2012, they developed a method of roasting Kona coffee that they called “Extra Fancy.” The client brief was to create print material that would give descriptive information about the new product. This would be placed alongside the product itself, so the brief was to stay simple and minimal. The coffee bean image is a “quick-read” version of the paragraph content. The design had to look consistent in both Japanese and English, because the posters and brochures were used in Honululu Coffee franchises in the Pacific Islands, Japan, and Guam. The client also requested a photo collage with the motif of the beach. I included an illustration of the logo’s wahine having a relaxing cup of coffee.

visualizing blank canvas
PERSONAL PROJECT 2013 Dumaguete, Philippines Exhibtion Collaterals The Blank Canvas Variations are paintings that make use of canvas on canvas, and thread. It experiments with the possibilities of form and figure that can be found in the simple white cloth that iis the standard base of a painting, and thus is often concealed.. It was a natural step to design the exhibition collaterals void of color. The lines created wtih small squares are reminiscent of the “tooth” detail in the canvas. The posters were printed by monotone risograph. Large and solid shapes take advantange of risograph’s capacity to reproduce high contrast graphics in a cost-effective manner. They were printed in A4 and A3 format. The 3-fold brochures were printed in grayscale and specifically designed for reproduction via photocopying. The Franklin Gothic fonts in heavy, were selected because of their ability to stand out against a black background.

community art
MOVING IMAGE LAB FILIPINAS 2013-15 Dumaguete, Philippines Assistant Director/Creatives Moving Image Lab Filipinas is a non-profit curatorial platform that is starting in Dumaguete, Philippines. It addresses various issues in exhibition and art-making through curated shows, talks, discussions, and workshops. MILF is made up of a small team and the roles often overlap. Both the director and myself collaborate as creative directors and guide the volunteer graphic designers as they create various media for the organization. The logo of MILF is based on the idea of static in a ‘moving image.’ As an art platform, it has a brand identity that allows it to parasitically blend in with the changing themes that MILF is interested in. I developed the basic visual identity guidelines in collaboration with Kristoffer Ardena and Hans De Barras. It relies on imposing grid-structure and repetitive typography (Svet Simoslav’s Nexa Light and Bold) in order to send a somewhat consistent message despite varying events.

NEXGEN ONLINE
NEXGEN APPLIANCES 2014 Mesa, Arizona USA Website Graphics developed in collaboration with Lucky Studio Design Nexgen Appliances is a company that specializes in the manufacturing and selling of various products for network security. With the Lucky Studio Design team, we developed the graphical material for nexgenappliances.com, which is the primary platform where people can purchase the appliances. The main challenge was to be able to communicate how the products can help businesses and individuals. The gadgets themselves appear impersonal. so the images in the website attempt to give a glimpse on how the product can affect and improve life. We selected different scenarios where the products could be used for network protection such as offices, homes, schools, factories, even construction sites. Nexgen also co,llaborates with various other softwares and we created a format to display Nexgen as a licensed carrier of the softwares.

o2 in a package O2 Rx LABS 2014 O2 IMMUNE SUPPLEMENT 2014 Scottsdale, Arizona USA Visual Identity Development Logos Character Design (Oxyee) Web Graphics Packaging O2 Immune is an oxygen supplement that boosts immunity and prevents illness and fatigue. It was developed in 2014 by Dr. James Tuggle. The client wanted the logo and supporting materials to be graphical depictions of oxygen. Our solution was bubbles and bright blue. Dr. Tuggle wanted to introduce the product as a supplement that is kid friendly. He invented a bubble-like character called Oxyee. Oxyee was designed using 3D software, and his happiness repeats across all the products and promotional material in various different angles. O2Immune is available in sachet in powdered form. I created a design for the package that was able to put together all the content that the client wanted on the package such as the flavor, a description about the supplement, and the various ingredients.

sonia’s tales
TALES FROM THE WORDSMITH 2014 SONIA SYGACO Great Books Publishing, Philippines Book Cover Tales from the Wordsmith is a book full of twists and turns, with surreal narratives and surprise endings. These short stories are set in the context of a character’s fantastical life in the tropics. I received an email from an author requesting if she could use one of my paintings as a background for the cover of her book. The painting is called Roses and Incense (2010) done with synthetic polymer on paper. I agreed but only if she would allow me to create the cover design. The style of this cover is loosely based on an earlier book cover design I made for personal use. I wanted to make use of the structure again, for a book that would be published. The title is a custom-designed font based on hand-painted calligraphy. This cover makes use of the flow of the hand-painted wave of text in order to give the image action.

kickstarting chronosphere
CHRONOSPHERE 2014 Kind Fortress ISAAC SHALEV Stamford, Connecticut USA Graphics for Kickstarter Campaign Kind Fortress’ Chronosphere is a kickstarter game that tests how well you know world history and the chronology of events. I developed the images that were to be specifically used for the kickstarter campaign. Kickstarter has a format that can be accentuated and personalized for the product through graphics produced at the right size and format. I based the web graphics on the look of the board game and the cards. The kickstarter avatars are the actual personalities in the cards used in the game. The numbered banners use the hands of the clock in the Chronosphere logo. The stretch goals indicate financial milestones that unlock developments in the game. I used a pocketwatch to show the idea that the goal could be a achieved “in a matter of time.”

what is xdp?
PHILIPPINES XDP STUDY GROUP 2015 Roxas City and Metro Manila Philippines Pamphlet and Infographic Poster X-Linked Dystonia Parkinsonism is a genetic illness originating in Panay island. It was recorded as early as 1975 but proper treatment could not be developed because of the belief in the region that the illness was associated with witchcraft. The Philippines XDP Study Group locates and reaches out to persons with this illness. I developed an easy-to-read, friendly, yet authoritative design for their pamphlet, that serves as a detailed guide to understanding and identifying XDP. In order to give clear information I created drawings and infographcis to show symptoms and patterns of inheritance. The informational poster is designed to be placed around clinics and in hospitals across the country. It had to provide clear information, be easy to read from a distance, and be able to show the appearance of the condition in a respectful manner.

tree in a box
PLANTOGRAM 2015 Windmere, Florida USA Packaging Plant O Gram is a Florda-based company that produces fruit trees for sale and shiipping in a gift box. Their motto is “the only gift that keeps on giving! I illustrated a tree that bears all-kinds of fruits. When folded into a box, the branches wrap around and show details that can stand out from panel to panel. The design was first inked by hand and modified to vector format so that it could be printed on a 48 x 12 x 12 -inch box. The illustration was done in monotone with thick lines because of the printing process of stamping. A large stamp of the image was printed and fixed onto a roller and rolled across a sheet of board, creating multiple copies at a time.. This box was printed in a cost effective way and with a recyclable finish.
