As a part of our collaboration with Kobe Design University, we presented Torikoju, our take on Eating in Open Air. We designed and built a complete pop-up cafeteria including the tableware, coffee percolators, tables and stools, textiles, clothing and even the cafeteria tent itself. Our cafe was open for everybody in Helsinki on May 19th as a part of the famous food carnival, called the Restaurant Day. On that day, anyone can open up a restaurant in the streets of Helsinki. After that we had three exhibitions, first in Habitare, then in Tokyo and Kobe. www.torikoju.fi

Design students of Aalto University School of Art and Design created their own vision of the home of the future at Habitare fair. The Homework project was created using high-quality materials and comprises space, furniture, textiles and objects. Homework also presents the students’ perspective on what is important in a home. What is a home? What does home mean today? Home is where we spend most of our time; it is where we eat and sleep. However, there is no simple answer to the question, as everyone creates their own home. The aim of the project was to leave behind traditional notions and create new ways living. To grasp the essence of home, students considered and observed daily routines and lifestyles as well as cultural differences. The studies on eating, cooking, rest, sleep, washing, coming and going – life itself - served as the basis for designing the home of the future. Homework is a starting point for the functions related to lifestyle and living that truly make a house a home. Modern times are strongly marked by various phenomena merging into a seamless continuum, and this feature is also reflected in the perspective of architecture on the present day. “A conventional room division and spatial borders become blurred. The new intermediate spaces are where the most fascinating transformations and experiments of new technology, spatial thinking and social dimensions take place. Furniture and space become blended into one. New aesthetics emerge in this field.”, as Pentti Kareoja, Professor in Spatial Design, describes the transition. The design of the Homework exhibition space brings together all of the related educational fields, including Spatial and Furniture Design, Industrial Design, and Textile Art and Design. The exhibition space was created as a joint effort of 34 students under the guidance of five professors; Simo Heikkilä, Pentti Kareoja, Timo Salli, Martin Relander and Pirjo Kääriäinen. The Homework home was open to visitors at the Habitare fair at Helsinki Exhibition and Convention Centre on 1 – 5 September 2010. Habitare is the leading furniture, interior decoration and design event in Helsinki.
