Anna Maria Essig

I discovered my interest in architecture through the lens of my analogue camera. Exploring architecture and its associated culture has become a central theme in my travels, offering inspiration. The diverse lifelines, architectural approaches, and local techniques often fascinate me and fill me with joy about my profession.

Recycling and Community Center

Takeshita Street, Tokyo, Japan

Combining two different programs within an existing niche, while raising awareness regarding recycling by making it visible within the city.

The plastic recycling center (PP, PET) is organized vertically to optimize the space of the narrow five meter wide niche. A circular conveyor belt system brings the raw material from the adjourning train station to the top of the building. From there, the bottles travel down through the building to get sorted and temporary stored in the five silos. Entwined with the route of the plastic is a second pathway, creating dwellings within the city, that are open to the public.

The community center on the lower floors offers working, living and eating spaces to the people from the neighbourhood, as well as a workshop to produce one’s own bentobox from the recycled plastic of the recycling center. Inspired by TooGoodToGo food from the variety of restaurants in the surroundings is offered. A welcoming atmosphere and shared space for all age groups, from students to elders, is created.

The tower is 93 meters high and consists of a steel structure. The levels of the community center are covered in glass, the floors above in a tarp. A massive LED billboard funds the community center, as well as shows the number of recycled goods. The form of the building is influenced by the design restrictions of the city of Tokyo.

An Urban Neighbourhood in Poblenou

El Poblenou, Barcelona, Spain

Design of a studio house, which is later multiplied, to create a lively neighbourhood, in a given carrer of Barcelona.

The neighbourhood is shaped by two distinct path systems: one shaded for daytime use, and another traversing the rooftops, perfect for afternoons and nights. An introverted girder serves as a private space for sleeping, complemented by a semi-private gallery for living, and the spacious workshop below, bathed in natural light from the skylights. The sequence of rooms within the stuido house, creates a seamless transition from private to public spaces. The courtyards, embraced by six houses, offer a lush retreat for the residents.

The unique shape of the roofs forms a pathway utilized after the heat of the day, accentuated by showcase-like skylights that illuminate the way. Terraces nestled between the studio houses serve as communal spaces for social interactions, accommodating cafes and restaurants.

On the northern side, a well-preserved factory acts as a communal hub for various events such as fairs, flea markets, and exhibitions. Essentially, it‘s the juxtaposition of the dual path systems — daytime shade and nighttime illumination — that imbues the district with its charm.

Terrace Continuum

The Terrace Continuum

Rigiblick, Zurich, Switzerland

Creating a vivid neighbourhood on a given plot, optimizing two main parameters: shared community spaces and a max. of 35 m² living space per person.

The Terrace Continuum is a vivid neighbourhood targeting the mix of elderly people and young families. At its core are the shared spaces consisting of the interconnected balconies, a bicycle garage and workshop with shared tools, a big kitchen for neighbourhood events, and a spare room that can be used by the community. The all connecting garden is organized in different terraces following the terrain. The life line of the garden is the water play. Nourished by the rainwater, which is collected on the roofs, a continuous water flow over the terraces into the children’s playground and pond is created.

The semi-private areas of the flats, such as kitchens and living spaces are oriented toward the garden to encourage further exchange. The private rooms are either underground, lit up by light wells, or in the upper story, looking over the city of Zurich.

The mix of the target group should encourage exchange and learning between different generations, making the Terrace Continuum a lively and green neighbourhood.

Care Cuisine

Altstetten, Zürich, Switzerland

Creating an architectonical concept and performance, based on the autobiography “Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body”, of Roxane Gay.

Rooted in the belief, that every body has a unique story, the Care Cuisine aims to create a safe and nurturing space for adolescents, aged 12 to 16, addressing the complex relationships, they are forming with their bodies. The daily activities involve various circular flows of care; encompassing gardening, cooking, dining, and caring for plants, one another and oneself.

In response to the challenges young Roxane faced, the Project focuses on the connection between trauma and its effects on the body. Care Cuisine has three objectives:

- Education on Caring Practices around Food

- Creating a Safe Space

- Promoting Body Awareness

The Care Cuisine aims the spirit of inclusivity, acceptance and joy, by embodying a society that embraces the diversity of human bodies as a source of beauty and strength.

The design prioritizes inclusivity and openness, with adaptable furniture, a glass façade for ample natural light, and sliding doors, connecting indoor and outdoor spaces seamlessly. The six pavilions have no hierarchy, emphasizing equal importance amongst the different functions of cooking, washing, dining, cleaning and storing. The folding roof interconnects the pavilions and blurs the boundaries between inside and outside.

The final presentation of the project was held as a performance. Required where a minimum of eight props, in five different scales.

Snake Bench

Oerlikon, Zürich, Switzerland

Creating an intervention in a public space by designing and building a piece of furniture.

The ONA Building of ETH in Oerlikon was lacking seating areas for students to eat, relax or work outside. The Snake Bench acts as a flexible and interactive furniture on the covered terrace. It consists of two different modules: a chair and a bench, interconnected with each other, creating a chain of the two modules. To create a flexible bench, each module is equipped with wheels that lock when weight is added, thus enabling an infinite way of assembling the bench, based on the needs of the user.

In the first stage of development, a height adjustable table was included. Later, the bench modules were updated to become living room furniture pieces with storage space.

The Bench is constructed of squared wood beams, connected with dowels. The goal was to use as less screws as possible. The rolls are self-constructed, as well as the connections between the benches. Upcycled sailing cloth is used for the upholstery and inside of the frame, due to its resistance and durability.
