simply BERLIN

Simply is an independent publication about the beauty of ordinary things. Every issue is a collection of words and pictures dedicated to a single theme. The concept of Simply is, well, simple - to speak about matters everyone can relate to, but to do it in a way, which inspires the reader to see them with new eyes. Made by and for those experiencing “glossy lifestyle fatigue, Simply aims to create content, which celebrates the beauty of everyday life. Concept author: Anna Sundukova Simply is always looking for contributors and is happy to hear from readers, potential collaborators and partners. Get in touch! hidearsimply@gmail.com

simply BERLIN What happens when you walk the streets of a city with a cup of coffee, aimlessly, leisurely, and yet so fully present in the moment that you pay attention to every detail? First, you start seeing the special in the ordinary. And then you get to know the city, you truly discover it beyond the clichÊ of a tourist façade.

Simply Berlin is about that. It is a walk around the city and it is a tribute to the beauty of everyday life. This is a document of a certain perspective on reality, which captures the hidden poetry of the seemingly ordinary. To me, cities are more than just streets and buildings. A city can become a close friend that speaks to you, that you hang out with. The more time you spend together, the more it reveals its true essence. This photo essay is a case study that explores that mood, atmosphere and feeling, which is so elusive and so hard to define, yet is unmistakably there, giving a distinct flavour to the daily experience of a city. I take photos of moments that seduce me with charisma and personality. They are simple and familiar places, habitual scenarios, regular things and common moods. This is simply Berlin. All photos taken with a 35mm film camera from ca. 1970s.

Berlin is jazzy. It is a city built on improvisation, where the syncopated rhythm of thousands of differing lifestyles, political views, cultural traditions, sexual preferences, eating habits and clothing styles merge unexpectedly into a rich, engrossing and profoundly inspirational tune.

Whether the tiled inside of a subway station or the flea market vintage furniture in bars and cafes, there is always a hint of nostalgia in the air.

Nobody seems to be immune against the typical Berlin winter mood. The mood that turns you introverted and melancholic, questioning the meaning of existence in this city of seemingly interminable greyness.

Then the summer, so needed and longed for, finally rushes into homes, streets and hearts. The sky over Berlin becomes every shade of vanilla, candy and ice cream. The ice cream becomes a fully appropriate dish and everyone seems to rediscover their faith in life once more.

Summer evenings after work are best when spent outside with friends, soaking up the soft warmth of the setting sun. It is a time of lightness, when simple joys lift the viscous heaviness of a day job routine off your shoulders.

When evenings still sink early into darkness, the warmth of light spilling out from the cafes out onto empty streets seems especially romantic. The thought of being comforted by yet another round of coffee and cake is often an irresistible temptation.

In this city, there are a few simple pleasures, that feel like pure happiness, like the carefree summer days and lazy Sundays. So insignificant on the one hand, yet so powerfully addictive on the other, these little moments make you feel like you would like to stay here forever.
