Demond Matsuo begins each piece by covering his entire working surface with collaged paper. He then layers illustration, dense collage and washes of gesso to form the figures found in the final piece. The work is born of Demond’s intense study of subjects in books. His appreciation of Asian history and fascination with mythologies of many cultures can be found in every piece. He sources paper that references intricate embroidery of Japanese samurai hakama, geisha kimonos, Turkish carpets and African kente cloths.
The collage serves as a treasure map of sorts, an alchemical illustration pulling you through to understanding my overall meaning. In love we succumb to the new self that arises from the other.
