LISA QUALLS

VERMILLION NEST #2 14 x 17 LQ107

Lisa Qualls is a native of Baton Rouge and resident of Tallahassee, FL. Her work has been exhibited in numerous locales across the United States including Louisiana, Texas, New York, Oregon, New Jersey, and North Carolina, among others. Qualls’ work explores the ways that cultures interact and intersect by investigating what she calls “visual markers.” This term refers to the “variety of ways that a group of people identify and distinguish themselves.” While such markers might aid in social functions, boundaries, education and ritual for those within a social group, they may appear quite alien and evoke fear, wonder or curiosity in those outside it. Specifically, Qualls focuses on the ability of these “visual markers” to move from one group to another while retaining the power of the visceral response and transform in meaning and interpretation. She explores these ideas in both macro and microcosms, often focusing on the peoples of the southern U.S. and the migration of Africans to Europe with the reoccurring theme of evolution of culture and society.
