Replicas are stolen designs not connected to the designer or brand authorised to make or sell the genuine product. These cheap copies are short-lifespan, manufactured and sold without permission from the creator.

Industrial and furniture designers work in small studios or as designer-makers. Design theft robs them of a rightful income from royalties - a small percentage of net sales.

Buying knock-offs hurts more than the designer. The entire design economy is affected – fake designer furnishings also hurt retailers, manufacturers and importers, that make and sell authentic designs.

‘Replica’ is not a trend like ‘vintage’ or ‘industrial’ replica is fake!

Design brands can’t afford expensive legal battles; our industry is plagued by David vs Goliath attempts to recoup rightful income.

If we eat organic and know our food sources, similarly, we must care about how we furnish our spaces.

That’s around 800,000 threeseater sofas, 1.7 million dining tables, 3.5 million coffee tables or 7 million chairs! Like fast fashion, fast furniture is also killing the planet.

The counterfeit design industry threatens the future growth of Australia’s furnishing sector.

Australian businesses profit by knocking-off furnishings. Design theft by industry professionals devalues their projects. And shows total disregard for the people who invest, live in or use the spaces they build.

Late last year, we announced joint ADA Award recipients for vivid design comp at a live award ceremony. We’ll unveil ADA Design Fringe Award winners (formerly Fringe Furniture) at Denfair - discover new work by rising design stars pp 6-7.

Our advisory board, a valued group that will guide ADA programming and strategic planning, will be introduced during MDW.

MELBOURNE DESIGN WEEK Next month we are honoured to join ‘Futures Collective’ at Villa Alba Museum and showcase our collaboration with designer-maker Ash Allen. You can preview ADA Member MDW events pp.12-14.

ADVOCACY & POLICY CONSULTATION In mid-2021, we concluded a two-year consultation with the IP Australia Designs Review, a research phase that informs policy amendments. The most immediate outcome is a 12-month ‘grace period’ for Australian design registrations. We’re engaged in ongoing consultation with DFAT re free trade agreements and presently attending a roundtable series aimed at drilling down policy nuances, as well as finalising a response to a commissioned IP Australia research project. Supported by Banki Haddock Fiora lawyers and the ADA Stakeholders who generously give their time to join these forums, we’re very thankful for this input and support.

Cultivated by Cult Cultivated offers a new form of sustainability for original design by offering to buy back, refurbish or resell furnishings that are ready for a second or even third life, or require end-of-life consideration. Be it an armchair that needs reupholstering or entire office space or restaurant of worn-out seating; the program works with local manufacturers and craftspeople to restore, reinvigorate or recycle original design. The team assesses products to determine restoration options or buy products from customers offering credit towards future purchases. Surprisingly, refurbishment can be more economical than replacement!

Melbourne Design Week + Denfair

Authentic Design Alliance: Presents Caged By Ash Allen CAGED, an installation of one-off design objects reimagined by Ash Allen and curated by Authentic Design Alliance, previews at Denfair, with the entire collection showing during Melbourne Design Week. After experimenting with welded steel mesh during Melbourne’s rolling series of lockdowns, designer-maker Ash Allen explored how a grid-like material might translate to furniture. Borrowing from recognisable forms and interpreting them as functional, sculptural objects, Ash began with one of the most identifiable chairs in the world, Michael Thonet’s bentwood chair No.14, itself an innovation in material, form and function when it debuted in 1859.

“Within the oppression of lockdown, I was thinking about cages and the notion of being caged, and then began seeing meshwork everywhere - from safety fencing at tram stops to Gabion basket retaining walls.” These gridded cages began to reflect the emptiness and superficiality of many things. From social media vanity to “fake” news, and ultimately, the hollowness of the replica furniture industry.” Ash’s Bentwood chair reinterpretation sparked a collaboration with the Authentic Design Alliance. Ash worked directly from the original licensed objects, his meticulous process involving measuring to scale, cutting and folding before hammering and welding each piece. ADA Awards

ADA Award of Merit Vivid Design Comp 2021 After the inevitable cancellations of design events over the past two years, it was a delight to end 2021 with a live judging experience and a physical exhibition that opened to a packed room at Showroom by Bowens in November. Vivid design comp is a springboard for early-career designers, an essential kickstart for many into long-term commercial careers, now in its 18th edition. To support and encourage excellence in design, we have partnered with vivid since 2017, presenting the Authentic Design Alliance ‘ADA Award of Merit.’ The 2021 joint recipients are Samuel Burns for ‘Arc Bench’ and Zachary Hanna ‘On Hold’ coat hook. Joining the DIA as a presenting partner, vivid21 was made possible by support from Laminex, Dulux, Showroom by Bowens, and Artichoke magazine, with the exhibition and program expertly curated and produced by Daniel Della Riva from Latitude.

ADA Design Futures Award 2021 Authentic Design Alliance has partnered with Design Fringe (formerly Fringe Furniture) since 2017, one of Australia’s longest-running design exhibitions, a highlight of the Melbourne Fringe Festival. This year themed home, the ‘Designers on Your Doorstep’ online event revealed insight into how lockdowns impacted the creative process. Many designers could not access their studios and resourcefully used their home environment to produce the exhibited works. Brodie Neill, Into the Deep Australian designer Brodie Neill built furniture as a teenager in his spare time, so it’s no surprise that it led to a furniture degree at the University of Tasmania. With sights set on a global career, he then completed a Masters in Furniture Design at Rhode Island School of Design in the US before moving to the UK in 2006. Soon, his work joined collections with European brands, including Kundalini, Riva 1920 and Swarovski, before Neill launched self-designed and self-produced furniture brand Made in Ratio in 2013 from his East London studio. Frustrated by the lack of opportunity to be fully immersed in the product development process when working externally with companies, Brodie was motivated to go it alone. The essence of Made in Ratio is born of the craftsmanship learned from his early training in Tasmania and honed with the connections to British and European manufacturing. Working alongside some of the finest craftspeople in Europe and championing time-honoured materials, the collection marries innovation with design excellence. Signature to Brodie’s design practice, forms explore fluidity, as he finds himself drawn to the notion of the continuous loop and the endless form of eternity.

In October, Neill collaborated with Design Tasmania and Hydrowood to present ‘ReCoil’ during London Craft Week alongside ‘Continuum’ a selection of his major upcycled works. Taking a material-first approach, Neill used Hydrowood scrap veneers to painstakingly create the

His ‘Gyro’ table was featured at the Australian Pavilion during the London Design Biennale 2016 and joined NGV Triennial last year. The mesmerising work is a modern rendition of the traditional specimen table modernised using a self-developed composite material made from ocean plastic waste. Collaborating with an international network of scientists, researchers, environmental experts, beachcombers, engineers, artisans and manufacturers to collect and reconstitute small fragments of plastic washed up on the shores around the globe. Brodie produces the terrazzo-like composite he calls ‘Ocean Terrazzo’ that is inlaid in a pattern that depicts the Earth’s longitudinal and latitudinal lines.

In Australia, for the first time for MDW22, Spence and Lyda are delighted to introduce Álvaro to present Plastic Rivers, a collection of woven rugs with yarn made from recycled PET plastic waste. Each rug is hand-tufted and crafted without knots, using yarn produced from recycled plastic bottles to create detailed aerial views of the planet’s most polluted rivers. The Plastic River No.6 Ganges rug is particularly notable given the recycled materials have been sourced from the surroundings of the depicted river. Crafted in collaboration with GAN Rugs’ team of local artisans in India, the weave is a highly soft, resistant, and durable textile that one might question whether it is wool and not upcycled plastic waste. Unlike a wool rug, Plastic Rivers are suitable for either indoor or outdoor use, and their 100% recycled composition makes them fully recyclable at the end of their long land latitudinal lines.

Spence and Lyda present ‘Futures Collective’ - a multi-faceted sustainability narrative for our time, housed at the historic Villa Alba Museum in Kew. The exhibition honours what Spence and Lyda do best - elevating mindful objects and the spaces we inhabit with crafted pieces of exceptional beauty and meaning. A refined curation will give visitors insight into the stories behind the creators and makers in a unique environment that reflects on the past whilst considering our best collective future. The second ‘Innate’ collection by Jon Goulder will showcase alongside works by Broached Commissions, rugs by Alvaro Catalan De Ocon (Spain), and contemporary furniture by rising British design star Lucy Kurrein.
