For my mom and dad for your constant support when I need it most and for always believing in me. Thank you for always being on the other end of a skype call, listening to my stress rants and calming me down during my numerous panic attacks. If it wasn’t for your unerring support and complete confidence in my abilities I wouldn’t have gotten this far. I love you both and couldn’t have done it without you.

GOI NG DUTC H
Hi, my name is Anne Hellersmith and as the title of this portfolio suggests, I am a Dutch-American designer. Born in San Francisco, I moved to Groningen, The Netherlands with my parents when I was four years old. The Netherlands is where I grew up, and will always be the place I consider home, but besides being of two cultures, my parents also instilled me with a love of travel. From a young age I have traveled with my parents, and it is to these adventures that I owemy desire to not only travel, but also live abroad. I got my undergraduate degree in Graphic Communication at the University of Northampton in England and, after this, moving to San Francisco for my Master’s seemed like the logical next step. I’ve learned a lot since moving here. I’ve grown as a person and a designer. And though I’ll probably always think of myself as Dutch, my experiences in England and San Francisco have made me realize I’m always going to jump at new opportunities no matter what country they take me to.

OBJECTIVE To pick a brand and revamp not only the look and feel of that brand but also imagine expansion options. Examine the core values of that brand and explore how they might apply across a new target audience. SOLUTION The Girl Scouts of America (gsa) has a core mission of helping girls from a very young age through high school. I envisioned what they might do if they started helping adult women as well. I gave the GSA a bolder, more mature look, and focused on how their organization could empower all women personally, socially and financially.

OBJECTIVE Pick a major problem we face and figure out a way to solve that problem through an interactive interface. Then go on to design this interface from the ground up, starting with user journeys and ending with a fully flushed-out product. SOLUTION The problem I picked was food waste, a huge issue in America and worldwide. I created an app that would help people track their food and avoid wasting it. The app tracks expiration dates and alerts the user when something is about to spoil, while suggesting recipes using ingredients the user already has. The visuals are meant to be friendly, calming and inviting.

OBJECTIVE Redesign an annual report to reflects that company’s core values to their fullest. Include tables and infographics along with appropriate imagery. SOLUTION I created the visual system for this annual report using KLM’s brand colors, simple, clean typography, and two sets of photos. I combined black and white photography of various elements of its airplanes as well as full color travel photography to take the reader along on a KLM journey through the report.

OBJECTIVE Develop a range of materials for a typography conference. Create a visual system and use it across promotional materials as well as products useful during the conference itself. SOLUTION For the visuals, I took inspiration from the name of the conference, Rhythm. This led me to play with patterns, textures and repeated shapes. I used a combination of geometric shapes, bright colors, photography, and dynamic compositions to invite the audience to come take a closer look and get involved with the themes of the conference.

OBJECTIVE Three short projects focused on developing my motion graphics skills. The three projects included here are a movie title sequence, a short letter reveal exercise and a book trailer. SOLUTION Due to the nature of these projects I mostly focused on developing my skills in motion graphics. The first project is a short title sequence for Ex Machina for which I played off the main visuals dominant in the movie. The second piece is a letter reveal where I played with various techniques to add life to illustrations. And finally, in a book trailer for Making and Breaking the Grid, I explored adding movement to the concepts discussed in the book.

OBJECTIVE Develop a film festival based on a selection of movies by a director of our choosing. Create a logo and a visual system that reflects the core of what makes the chosen director so highly regarded SOLUTION I chose to focus the film festival on Christopher Nolan’s movies. As he is known for his tendency to play with non-linear storytelling and mind-warping movies, I based my imagery on this sense of shifting perspectives. I played with the sense of vertigo people feel when they look up at skyscrapers as well as warping reality with double-exposure photography.

OBJECTIVE Design a system and range of promotional materials intended to draw students into a creative career at General Motors. Set the groundwork for a campaign to provide high school and college students with a creative yet practical career option. SOLUTION I developed a bright, vibrant visual system to rebrand the GM Design Center and appeal to a younger audience. I designed a set of informational cards—one for each department of the Design Center—that would all come in a small custom folder to be handed out at career days and talks. Along with this, I redesigned a small instructional booklet that goes through the steps involved in drawing a car. This is a project that will be expanded on by my supervisor and the rest of the graphic design team at General Motors.

OBJECTIVE Encourage responsible travel to developing countries. The problem central to my thesis is the fact that, especially in the places where the potential good of increased tourism is the greatest, the actual downsides of tourism are the most severely felt. SOLUTION I focused my thesis predominantly around a guidebook and an accompanying itineraries booklet. These and the rest of the deliverables all center on the idea that there are simple steps each and every traveler can make that will not only greatly improve their impact on the host country, but also improve their experience of it.

AN MFA THESIS PROJECT
AN MFA THESI S PROJEC T
Tourism is a massive global industry: that much was clear to me from the start and was only reinforced through research. This means that it has huge positive as well as negative impacts. Negative impacts hit developing countries particularly hard, as many aren’t prepared for, nor have the infrastructure to manage the large influx of people visiting their country. This leads to overtaxing of natural resources, increased pollution as well as cultural disruption. On the other hand, eco-tourism, sustainable and responsible travel have the power to turn this around and instead benefit the host countries and their conservation efforts as well as providing an economic boost. Once again, this is particularly relevant to developing countries. This became the problem I set out to “solve” with this thesis project. Not only do I want to encourage people to travel beyond their comfort zone by visiting developing countries, I also want to make sure that these developing countries benefit from increased tourism instead of suffering from it. For the purpose of scale, though, I chose East Africa and, in particular, Malawi as a case study of sorts. This would allow me to focus down and make the scale more manageable. I chose this region because Malawi is the developing country I have the most personal connection to.
