Michael Michaeledes in 1982
My mother and Michael met for the first time in 1962 and his first exhibition at her gallery, then called the Hamilton Galleries, was in 1966. Although I was still at college I remember meeting him, but I only started to work with Michael in the early 1970s. Michael has been with the gallery the longest of all the artists we have shown and always held a special relationship with me and my mother. For the catalogue of her celebration exhibition in 2007 Michael wrote: As well as being very knowledgeable, Annely was a very kind and humble person who showed sympathy to her artists. She willingly loaded her car with my works and travelled to various European cities for exhibitions, which demonstrated her interest and energy in promoting her artists’ work. In 1976 when I was selected to represent Greece in the Venice Biennale, the works were blackened by lorry exhaust fumes en route destroying the white shaped canvas, which was a disaster. She advised me to go immediately to Venice, and I was most distressed by the state of the work. When I telephoned Annely she was encouraging and sent her son David to pick up a roll of canvas from my studio and bring it to Venice and she arranged for David Parry, my assistant, to come to Venice and help re-stretch the canvas. Luckily the opening was postponed one month, so we had time to recover the pieces, although we worked from dawn to dusk. Annely arrived a few days prior to the opening and was delighted with the recovered pieces, so the opening went well and she arranged a grand supper afterwards. Thus I understood that Annely was the very best dealer any artist could have. This is Michael’s eighth exhibition at the gallery and the first one since he died in 2015 at the age of 91. It is the first time that we have shown the full development in Michael’s work from the landscape watercolours of the Greek islands and his later home in London, Hampstead, from the 1950s, through the abstract paintings and works on paper from the 1960s to the shaped canvases and cut-out works from the 1970s and on up to his last works. I would like to thank especially Michael’s wife Janet and his colleague and assistant Toby for all the help and input in making this exhibition possible. David Juda, February 2017
