it stares at you in every painting, manifesting itself in a wide array of variations and daring you to ignore it. so you gaze back in compliance. but a sustained look reveals how much the artist undermines its commanding presence. this goes directly to the content of the work; visual tension is generated when, to one degree or another, the imposing orderliness bumps up against the unruliness of gestural painting. in some pieces like Metaphor, the grid asserts its dominance whereas in others like the more frenetic Fray, painterly disorder triumphs. next, consider the dynamic variety of color applied throughout this body of work. in Thick and Thin luscious cerulean patches are latticed within the hushed yellow and green thick lines forming the grid. on the other hand, in Metaphor muted tones govern the context while just a hint of green is permitted to peep through in the background and push some of the surrounding browns toward red. the same color also pops up in the edges of the heavier grid lines. the intelligent use of color establishes an elegant relationship with the arrangement of the forms which helps deine the space in each of these paintings. At the same time the varied inclusion of brighter and quieter hues resolves in a satisfying mix leaving the former rendered all the more intense for the combination and the latter providing a grounded reality without becoming bland. the tension between order and disorder plus the range of color obliquely ties this work to the natural world. given the structure of the grid this may not be readily apparent until you consider the subject matter for these paintings as perhaps suggesting a microscopic perspective of nature. from such a cellular viewpoint this body of work begins to look far less abstract – or – inversely the reality of nature is revealed as an abstraction. this is the wonderful secret of these paintings: like nature they sublimely tap into the ambiguity between what is knowingly real versus what is imagined.
