Epic Citadel: Make your way from the Stone Table along the broad walkway. Turn left at the junction and stealthily approach the Epic Citadel, an abandoned castle adjoining the Blazing Battlefield. Sit at the base of the castle wall and explore inside the castle using your magic looking glass. Wonder at the craftsmanship and attention to detail evident within the castle walls, then find the exit and explore what lies beyond the walls. Beware of danger that is masked in sunshine! Approach each bend in the road with care. Why do you think this place was so hastily abandoned? Does the music hide a lurking evil presence? Turn the music down and listen for its footsteps. How did you feel as you and your companions wandered the deserted courtyards and alleyways?

Students will sit at the tables in front of the stone wall under the walkway to Colin Campbell Place, with the cobblestone area under their feet. They will use the Epic Citadel app on the iPads to explore the walled castle areas – the village, the alleyways, the castle courtyard and inside the church. They need to discover the way out of the castle area (through one of the alleyways to the left of the church steps), and then go up the hill and back inside the castle courtyard, and down the hill through the tents set up outside the castle walls. They can even go down to the river and explore down there...

too foul to swim across, and too miry to wade across. The only way to get everybody across is by using large floating lily pads. The quicksand beneath the surface of the swamp is so powerful that it sucks the lily pads down if someone is not touching them. Once they are placed in the swamp however, they become magical and cannot be moved again, so they must remain where they are placed. What are the consequences if only a few of the group make it across the swamp? How important was communication to conquer the swamp? Describe the key contributions of individuals. What were their strengths and weaknesses? 6

Fiendish Forest: Only the most brave and wise can survive the Fiendish Forest. Very few have returned to tell the tales of the horrors it contains. Howling wolves, demon spirits and other terrifying monsters lurk inside. The darkness is overwhelming and disorienting. Monsters attack from all directions with their haunting screams, and powerful weapons.

Introduce the idea of navigating into a forest, where it is commonly known that those who enter don’t usually return. The forest is filled with obstacles that take you by surprise and attack when you least expect it.

Write descriptive words about your survival from the Fiendish Forest.

Aim of this station is to imagine the Fiendish Forest being filled with monsters and creatures from strange places, like those in Princess Bride and ‘Anomaly’.

What did the forest look like when you first stepped inside?

Introduce that Sci Fi is a sub-genre of fantasy. Use the sci-fi graphic novel ‘Anomaly’. http://www.experienceanomaly.com/anomaly/apps Background to ‘Anomaly’: The year is 2717 and Earth is dying. Humans live in Terrariums, on off-world colonies or space stations. The Clik monsters are the first to infiltrate the human colonies. Use the Anomaly AR app to see the monsters come alive in the Fiendish Forest. See page 7 – the Clik monster appears and can be manipulated by touching the screen. .. After the Cliks are destroyed, the story reveals horrors worse than the invading Cliks.

What noises did you hear? How did these sounds make you feel? What did the monsters look like, sound like, and smell like? Why were the monsters so terrifying? What was the threat? Describe what happened when the monsters attacked. What were your feelings as you survived the terrors of the Fiendish Forest?

student’s line up on one side of the rope, and tell them that they are looking at a giant evil swamp. They must get their entire team across the giant evil swamp, but it is too evil to swim across, and too deep to walk across. (Obviously, they cannot walk around the river, since it does not end just because the ropes do). The only way to get across is by using the large, lily pads. (laminated cardboard lily pads). Give the students about eight or nine lily pads, so that they have enough to get across with one or two left over. Advise the group that this challenge isn't about physical abilities, but rather it is about communication. Unfortunately, the current in the river is so strong that it actually sweeps the lily pads away if someone is not holding them down (with a hand, foot, or other safe appendage). Also, the lily pads will only float whilst they are being touched. Once they are placed in the river, they become magical and cannot be moved again t, so they must remain where they are placed.
