February 2023, the CHCRPA received notice from the US DOT of a $160,000 SS4A award for our Regional Comprehensive Safety Action Plan to cover our TPO planning area. The CHCRPA’s Action Planning Grant was one of 473 selected for funding across the nation. This plan will demonstrate a model program for tying all the various transportation safety work into one unified planning document and will identify projects within joint-applicant jurisdictions that can be successfully implemented immediately following the adoption of the Plan.

We want to extend thanks for to the TPO Safety Committee; our surrounding municipal partners and joint applicants, specifically the City of Chattanooga, City of Red Bank, City of East Ridge, and Town of Signal Mountain; as well as our grant partners and interested community organizations, specifically the Center for Urban Informatics and Progress at UTC, TDOT, CARTA, Northwest GA Regional Commission, Chattanooga Area Regional Council of Governments / Southeast Tennessee Development District, Chattanooga Bicycle Club, and Northside Neighborhood House for all of their support for this successful application and for their commitment to working towards a safer region for all road users.

Staff are currently waiting for FHWA to execute the grant agreement, are coordinating closely with the City of Chattanooga grant team, and are attending FHWA trainings on grant execution, federal regulations, and safety action planning. More information about the grant can be found here: www.transportation.gov/grants/ss4a/2022-awards If you or someone from your organization would like to be involved with the TPO Safety Committee, please reach out to Anne Welch, kawelch@chattanooga.gov.
