DESIGN INSPIRED BY ELK Study the structure and nature of biological system, provide new design ideas and working principles for appearence or engineering technology. In this project, I chose an animal as inspiration to design a product. I went to the Beijing zoo to find suitable target, and I found elk's antler is really graceful, which could be not only inpiration of the product's appearence, but also a good key word for my design direction.
PRIMARY RESEARCH
Firstly, I researched some pictures and did some sketches of elk to help me analysis the design points. And I decided use antler to design a product because it has a lot of possibilities. It brings a feeling of complex, steady, reliable and strong.

Antler has complex structure, which could be designed as furniture with storage space. It has a strong feeling of 3d mensional sturcture, stable and irregular. Due to complex shape, it also very decorative. I used thumbnails drawing to expand my idea, and chose some of them to develop deeply

LIGHTING PRODUCT DESIGNED FOR BRAUN Branding plays a significant role within product design today.As product designer, need to consider brand factors, and their relationship to other design considerations. it is important that have an understWanding of the ingredients that make up a brand’s identity, in order to gain the necessary insights. In this project, I allocated a brand - Braun, and deconstructed it to design an appropriate lighting product that will fit both to its identity, and appeal to its consumers
P r im a r y Res ea rc h In primary research for this project, I researched light and brand background to analysis the product usability and appearance features. By researching light, I have gained a general understanding about the characteristices and functions of different kinds of light (e.g. make user feel comfortable should use warm and low brightness light).
Light is a fundamental resource in human lives. There are two categories of light source, natural light and artificial light.The main source of natural light is sun, which provide the earth with daylight. Other include the moon and stars, animals such as glow-worms. Electric lights including tungsten filament light bulbs, neon lights and fluorescent tubes. Light formative including direction, color, diffuse, contrast, specular and brightness. Different qualities of light have a lot of benefits, most of bedroom light wil prefer choose yellow, people will feel warm mentally, but for desk lamp, white light is more suitable for look on detail things. Light also have a great influence on the human emotions.
Braun is a household electrical appliances company who is famous for personalized design and internal quality. Through the research, I found that the features of Braun's design are simple, pure, high quality and mordern, which also as a guide for me to do the related design.

The possibilities for innovation are not, by any means, exhausted. Technological development is always offering new opportunities for innovative design. But innovative design always develops in tandem with innovative technology, and can never be an end in itself.
It does not make a product more innovative, powerful or valuable than it really is. It does not attempt to manipulate the consumer with promises that cannot be kept.
02 Good Design Makes a Product Useful A product is bought to be used. It has to satisfy certain criteria, not only functional but also psychological and aesthetic. Good design emphasizes the usefulness of a product while disregarding anything that could possibly detract from it.
03 Good design is aesthetic The aesthetic quality of a product is integral to its usefulness because products are used every day and have an effect on people and their well-being. Only well-executed objects can be beautiful.
04 Good design makes a product understandable It clarifies the product’s structure. Better still, it can make the product clearly express its function by making use of the user’s intuition. At best, it is self-explanatory.
07 Good design is long-lasting Good Design Is Long-lasting : It avoids being fashionable and therefore never appears antiquated. Unlike fashionable design, it lasts many years – even in today’s throwaway society.
08 Good design is through down to the last detail Nothing must be arbitrary or left to chance. Care and accuracy in the design process show respect towards the consumer.
01 Good design is environmentally friendly Design makes an important contribution to the preservation of the environment. It conserves resources and minimises physical and visual pollution throughout the lifecycle of the product.

01 Good design is as little design as possible
Products fulfilling a purpose are like tools. They are neither decorative objects nor works of art. Their design should therefore be both neutral and restrained, to leave room for the user’s selfexpression.
Less, but better – because it concentrates on the essential aspects, and the products are not burdened with non-essentials. Back to purity, back to simplicity.
Chosen task: bedroom, office/study Local lighting increases light levels over the work and immediate surroundings. Local lighting often allows the user to adjust and control lighting and provides flexibility for user.
Bedroom
Usually the height of bedside lamp should be 1.5m from the ground to a good distance of between 1.7m, the distance from the wall is between 9.5 cm to 49 cm. Should be easy to turn on or off. The brightness should be adjustable. Suitable for reading or relaxing.
Office/study
In the case of normal sitting position, user should be can not see the light source directly. Eyes from the book at least 30cm (not easy to be tired) The appropriate height of the lamp is about 40 cm -50 cm Should be avoid light flicker.

The lampshade used ABS, which has a smooth surface and easy to process and dye. The most amazing mechanical properties of it are resistance and toughness, which could make the lampshade keep clean and its original color. There is no doubt that LED are extremely energy efficient. The consume of it up to 90% less power than incandescent bulbs, a great choice for environmental light source. All of those materials are environmental protection, durable and easy for processing, perfectly following Due to Braun gives people a feeling of calm and classic, simple colour like white, gray and black will be more suitable.The shape of the supporter and lampshade are inspired by Braun's loudspeakers.The materials of this lamp are durable, the shape of the lamp feel weighty, just as Daisy's job, make people feel calm and reliable. And also the height of the lamp is perfectly for reading and writing, to reduce the feeling of tired. When she working with computer, she could keep the lampshade in a normal position to avoid the light exposure to the computer screen directly.

Gardening power tool design Family focus Through a group work to design a brief, research and discuss users' demands. Then develop human cent red design conside ration f rom i ndividual research, use incorporate knowledge of cognitive and physical ergonomics to inform the development of appropriate form language. Also use creative and critical thinking skills through exploration, experimentation , analysis and presentation. And finally use 3D CAD modelling and digital prototyping to evidence design intent.

Persona Frank and Vanessa Frank(41) and Vanessa(39) are a young couple from Manchester with two children. They are on high incomes and live in their own detached house and much of the disposable income goes on the family and children. Spending a lot on their garden but not being keen gardeners, they find the garden a place to entertain and enjoy time with family and friends, thus, a lot of their gardening spending include garden leisure products.

Brief Family focus The brief is to design a powered device for maintaining and cutting lawn areas destined for family use. The proposed concepts must be able of shearing and shaping shrubs and trees planted as hedging. Had to conduct an in-depth research based on the persona and solve the issues raised by the target audience.
