A little birdie told me...
S
unday we celebrated Janine’s bridal shower. Naturally, I wanted to make something homemade with the bride and groom in mind. Craig (groom) is into the whole mustache thing, so with a little inspiration from here and here I painted/drew my own mugs. I wanted to use one of those “paint pottery” places but realized I didn’t have the time to get it painted and fired before the party. To my pleasant surprise I found about Pebeo porcelain paint pens. You can find these at any major art store (i.e. Hobby Lobby) I read online to use the Porcelain 150’s because they are more opaque. The white one is a fine tip, the black are normal sized. You can draw on your already fired and glazed mug ( I got mine from Target) and simply put it in the oven at 300 degrees for 35 minutes and wahla! The product says it’s dishwasher safe, but
4
to be on the safe side, I’d recommend hand washing. The Pebeo pens were interesting to use. Can you see in the mustache how it kind of looks a bit textured? With just one layer of paint the color isn’t as rich, so I wanted to do a second. Because I did the second layer before firing the first, the first layer seemed to scratch off a bit as I painted on top. Thus peeling off some of layer 1 and giving it that chunky look. Also, this stuff dries very quick, I ran into this “scratching” issue even on the first layer. I’m not sure how to completely avoid this issue but as I layered I tried to use light and heavy strokes. It worked okay. One of the “accents” in Janines wedding is a fun Ampersand. You can see her incorporation here. Luckily I found the same font online and duplicated the design on one of the mugs. Not perfect, but it will serve it’s purpose. To match the occasion I added little hearts on the handle.

n 2003, when I was 27 years old and freshly single for the first time in my adult life, I moved from my house in the Hills into an apartment in the Valley with my cousin/best friend. I had just ended a 7 year relationship/engagement and was going through a major party-girl phase in my life... Sewing my wild oats, so to speak, which was wildly fun but regrettable in many ways. I wasn’t looking for love, but ended up finding my soul mate living just downstairs. Over the year I lived there, we became best friends. We have a black French Bulldog named LeRoy and a Pug named Bebop who we treat like children. Though I’ve had many jobs throughout my life {actor, singer, makeup artist, designer -to name a few} I had been working as a freelance graphic/web designer since 1997 and for a contemporary art dealer since 2001. I started a company called beSmartbeGreen and made cute and snarky canvas grocery bags to replace plastic bags to help reduce my carbon footprint. And something strange and exciting happened... An ocean of creativity flooded into my life which I thought I had lost to my past. As cliche as it may sound, blogging helped me find myself again after losing my identity to a past life crippled by anxiety, panic attacks, agoraphobia, and an overall loss of faith in myself and the world around me. Five years later, I am lucky to be able to blog full-time {from my home office} about fashion, my style {sharing style secrets}, DIYs, hair tutorials, my home & home decor, makeup and beauty finds, all the while trying to inspire creativity in others.

G
rowing up near Historic Irvington, just east of downtown Indianapolis, I’ve been able to watch it grow, change and develop for many years. While I would be in ballet classes at the church just behind the strip, my mother would enjoy a hot cup of coffee at a local café. Irvington’s small community consists of one main strip with older neighborhoods surrounding the area. The community has places fit for their locals, including places such as a bike shop, library, theatre, dog bakery, numerous coffee shops and eateries, a Mac help store and retail stores. Tucked in between Jockamo Upper Crust Pizza and the Legend Classic Irvington Café, Homespun is located in what they call
the “heart of Irvington,” which was opened in July of 2010. Irvington is known for its thriving urban community, and has currently been growing with renovations taking place around the district. To keep their home growing, many shop owners support other locals by spreading the word of one another to their own networks and even using locally grown and made items in their stores. Some places like Homespun have opened up their doors to local vendors and entrepreneurs to sell their handmade goods in their shop. Before opening. Shopkeeper Amanda Mauer Taflinger, traveled and lived in a few
other states and countries as far as Spain. She ended her travels in Chicago, where she finished her Masters of Arts in Art Education. While in Chicago, Amanda was a part of the Renegade Craft Fair. The RCF is a large scale, (and free to attend) marketplace event. It features hundreds of artists that showcase their handmade items, crafts and artwork. The RCF holds events in Chicago, Austin, Brooklyn, Los Angeles, San Francisco and London. Returning to her home roots in Indianapolis after a ten-year absence, Amanda
realized how her social circle had grown, moved and now had different paths. Amanda’s husband, (at the time boyfriend,) suggested that she should start a project to keep her busy. Not having something similar to the RCF around Indianapolis, Amanda decided to try a smaller event like the RCF for local Indy artists, thus; the INDIEana Handicraft Exchange was created. From their first event with around 40 vendors to their upcoming even in June with over 100 vendors, there’s no doubt that the
“
“
Homespun ranges from the beautiful to the irreverent, from the adorable to the slightly sinister, from the hysterical to the just plain bizarre. -AMANDA
growth of the handicraft exchange program has benefited the stores growth as well. “Having run the Handicraft Exchange for several years before we opened the store gave us the opportunity to establish relationships and grow them with many vendors,” said Amanda. “We already had a lot of vendors in place who knew us, trusted us, and were comfortable sending us their handmade merchandise with no payment up front (since we operate on a consignment basis, not wholesale). It also gave us a chance to make our event known in the community.” Homespun is a small boutique dedicated to “modern handmade goods.” Many items sold are made with traditional crafting methods but the final product usually shows a contemporary feel and design. The shop currently works with 150 vendors from not only Indiana; but also the United States and Canada. When you step inside the deep red door, fresh beautiful smells come right to your nose from the soaps and goodies sitting along the front counter. Starting to look around you will find so much that catches your eyes, everything so different, but definitely belongs under the same roof. The shop carries house ware, stationery, bath & body care, artisan foods, jewelry, apparel, plush toys, baby items, art prints, handbags, accessories and more.
Their contemporary goods complement each other, and have so much to offer. “Homespun artists serve the dual purpose of art and function and range from the beautiful to the irreverent, from the adorable to the slightly sinister, from the hysterical to the just plain bizarre,” said Amanda. Vendors are hand selected by the owners through an online submission process. Jo Ash, employee at Homespun says Amanda has a “very good eye” at selecting merchandise for the store. Even though Jo has a 9-5 job, after falling in love with the store and its’ content she decided to work for Homespun for some relaxation. “I love the idea behind the store, it distresses me from my normal day,” said Jo. “I love coming in every week and finding new merchandise. You know you can get a pair of earrings and no one else is going to have them.” Jo explains that she believes in supporting locally. Their shop is a
a
great example of spreading awareness to “Shop Local.” Some products sold at the shop are made from 100% local and recycled sources. Irvington’s close-nit community really benefits from local support. “If you think about it, it’s the easiest and most direct way to boost the economy really,” said Jo. Currently, Homespun is progressing by growing and now going to offer more than just products. Just three minutes away from the shop is the start of a new space that will hold art classes and offer other attractions like hosting gallery shows monthly, as well as book signings, movie screenings and more to keep the growth of their business as well as Irvington. “My family and I live in Irvington,” said Amanda. “So we are very invested in being active and productive in our community, both as business owners and as individuals.”

Trendy snacks
t’s interesting how much of an influence my childhood has had on my favorite flavours. I grew up eating light sponges and regular yellow birthday cakes and I’ve never had the least bit of interest in dense mud cakes. I had a mug of hot milo before bed on most evenings, and that obsession has never gone away. And the strip of strawberry in a tub of neapolitan ice cream has locked in my intense love for all things strawberry milk flavoured. It may be artificial tasting to some people and it does tend to make me feel a little ill because I always have too much, but strawberry ice cream, strawberry flavoured milk and Macca’s strawberry thickshakes
a
18
are my weakness. Suze was telling me about the strawberry milk macarons from Cafe Cre Asion that sounded amazing and I really wanted to try. With the combination of my strawberry flavoured milk weakness and Suze’s encouraging “Dooooo it”’s, I had to test it out for myself. I decided to combine it with another idea that I had for a cookie dough buttercream. It seemed kind of appropriate, I’ve mentioned on this blog before that I have a serious weakness for choc chip cookies. They are the one thing besides scones that I will whip up randomly just so I can be a total pig, and I can never stop at one. So this macaron flavour was full of all the things I was addicted to.

S
o I’ve got to get this off of my chest. I care about bees. Like a lot. So much so, that when I have to write up the Links We Love at work each week I try to throw in one story about what’s going on in the world of bees. It’s gotten a little much though. I know. I know. People don’t want to be depressed and sad thinking about these poor little fuzzy insects that are living on the brink of their demise. They just want to think of them as cute little furry things that fly around and pollinate flowers and produce sweet liquid gold with
a

their other bee friends. They have a matriarchic system for cryin’ out loud! They’re even raw enough for Wu-Tang to care about. So yeah, they’re rad. So to talk about bees without being a total drag, I’ve made a new sandwich to showcase their sweet, sweet nectar. It’s inspired by one of my favorite pizzas OF ALL TIME. The Bee Sting. It’s from this place Roberta’s and it is the best thing I’ve ever had. It’s sweet, spicy and absolutely divine. It’s got fresh mozzarella paired spicy sopressata, basil, and red pepper flakes. Then it’s finished with a touch of honey.

The Bee Sting (Remix) Recipe
about 4 slices fresh mozzarella - 2 hearty slices of a Bâtard - 5 slices of sopressata picante - 1 tbs of red pepper flaked butter (combine 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes with one tablespoon of real salted butter, MIX) - 1 tbs of basil infused honey (fresh basil leaves and tupelo honey, OF COURSE)
Infused Honey Instructions
For more sandwich recipes go to: GrilledCheeseSocial.com
To make the basil infused honey, julienne about ten small basil leaves and stir them into a tablespoon of honey. I let the mixture sit overnight to let the flavors of the basil steep into the honey. When I was searching for a basil laced honey recipe, I found that a lot of people said to heat them together but I didn’t think it was necessary. I found that covering the mixture and letting it sit overnight worked wonderfully. After you’ve got your mixture ready, just spoon on about a 1/2 teaspoon (or more, depending on the size of your bread) onto each slice of the bâtard. Enjoy!

Succulent sides
W
hen I was thinking of side dishes for the big meal I couldn’t help but think of mashed potatoes which are nice and easy and always a hit. One of the things that I like about mashed potatoes is that there are just so many different things that you can do with them and I am always experimenting with them. I have been wanting to try using roasted red peppers and now was the perfect time to try them out along with some feta and oregano. The sweet roasted red pepper and salty feta flavour combo is a particularly nice one that I enjoy using in many dishes and it works out really well in these mashed potatoes that are made nice and creamy with some thick Greek yogurt. Another great thing about mashed potatoes is that they can be done on the stove top and on a day when you are roasting your meat it is good to be able to keep your oven free of one more dish.

Chairs and tables spaced out amongst the bakery offer a great view of the large chalkboard menus, daily specials and all. Meeting at the Mariott, baker Tess and chef Corey Rutland became hand-in-hand in creating the combinations they offer today at their lunch-based eatery. After being offered a good deal on the space in Tess’s old neighborhood, the couple knew they couldn’t turn it down. Roll With it Bakery opened its’ doors a little over two years ago and from the start, they have been cooking up delicious home meals and baked goods for their family, friends and other local customers in and out of the bakery. “We’ve always wanted to start up our own restaurant, or something,” said Bakery owner Corey Ruthland. “We were either going to start a business, or buy a house.”

With lunch hours, Roll With It Bakery offers sandwich, chip and drink combinations all under eight dollars. From cold cuts to specialty sandwiches, there’s something for everyone. They also offer half sandwiches to be paired up with soups and other sides. Their dessert items, displayed at the front counter, all go for under two dollars. Not only do they provide a wide range menu, but they also offer catering, custom cakes and special item options for larger groups and parties. “My favorite part about owning the bakery is that it’s ours,” said Tess. “It’s family oriented and I get to cook what I want cook.”
