PORFOLIO NGUYEN THI NGOC TUYEN
FOREWORD Time passes so fast, I could not believe I already finished my portfolio for second semester and I nearly finish my first year of studying Architecture at University of Sydney. In first semester I just generally making model and get a few basic understandings about architecture and design, but in this semester I really go inside function and program of a building. It is so interesting to see how our year project was divided into many different cities, and I think the purpose of this dividing is to provide first year students the experience to work in an international architecture environment. In my case, the city that I have is Paris. In this second semester, I learn so many things. I started my project by research about Paris, then chose the right function for my building, analysed it to produce the right and suitable program for it, then I went to next step of making model to understand about structure and facade of the building and so on . And like that every week I developed my project little bit more and finally finished it with my final presentation like a real architecture project. That was such a great experience. This portfolio will be divided into 4 parts: Design Studio, Communication, Construction and my personal project. I want to say thanks to all of my tutors and lectures, especially to my group tutor Mrs Neena, who always give me great advices, information and solutions to all of my questions and problems.

EXCAVATION & TRANSFORAMATION
Paris is the capital of France and the country's largest city. It is situated on the river Seine, in northern France. The city of Paris has an estimated population of 2,167,994 (January 2006). Paris is today one of the world's leading business and cultural centres, and its influence in politics, education, entertainment, media, fashion, science and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the world's major global cities. According to 2005 estimates, the Paris urban area is Europe's biggest city economy, and is fifth in the world's list of cities by GDP. Paris and the Paris Region, with €533.6 billion (US$731.3 billion) in 2007, produce more than a quarter of the gross domestic product (GDP) of France. The Paris Region hosts 38 of the Fortune Global 500 companies in several business districts, notably La Defense, the largest business district in Europe. Paris also hosts many international organizations such as UNESCO, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the informal Paris Club. A3 context about Paris
collage
When we mention about Paris, we all think about fashion, artists, romantic and French cuisine and especially French architecture. As a architecture student, I spend a half of the poster to present the iconic of architecture in Paris like Eiffel Tower, Napoleonic Arc de Triomphe and Lourve glass pyramid…I use a lot of text here so viewers easy to understand the meaning of my poster and middle of the poster I put the word “ BONJOUR”. It stands for hello, like a way to say hello to viewers and for me it is also a way I am say hello to Paris, the city that will companion with me the whole semester. This word “BONJOUR” and this poster mark an important beginning of my design project in Paris.

COMMUNICATION
AsSignment 1.1: Login and GraphiHcs ------MY DREAM---“I have a dream, a song to sing ...” My blog presents my dream to become a architect and a designer. I was born in a family where everyone are designers and architects. I used to spend hours of my childhood at consHtruction site with my Dad and my uncle. I admire the beauty of buildings, I read a lot of books about Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry.. and dream one day I will become a person like them. I still remember the first time I come to Sydney, and the first time I saw Sydney Opera House, I just could not stop saying to my friends “Oh my god, it is beautiful!” As you can see from the background of my blog, there is a image of a girl who look up to the sky and dream. She dreams about the far far away cities, about famous and beautiful buildings, about the architects who gave the inspiration to her study. And that girl is me. With the layout and the text, I try to keep them simple and easy to read and recognize by using pure white, grey and black at the main colors.
AsSignment 1.2: Collage ---PARIS--In this semester, my assignment in Design Studio is design a building in Paris, France. Therefore, three collages I present in this blog are all about Paris and the combination of the images of the sites and building which were provided in this asignment and the images that related to Paris. When making these three collages in Photoshop, I try to use the many different techniques of blending, filter gallery, image adjustment, free transform...
Collage 1 The collage presents a gate which open to Paris. The background of the collage is the blue print of Villa Savoye, a iconic building designed by Le Corbusier. This building is located in the countryside of Paris. On the door to Paris is the images of the things that Paris is famous for, like fashion, architecture, cuisine,..
Assignment 3: Drafted Squiggle This is my first experience with AutoCAD. It took me a while to familiar with the basic drawing and modifying command. After 6 hours, I finally finish 4 plans drawing for my building. 1. site plan and ground floor plan 1:200 scale 2. underground floor plan 1:100 scale 3. ground floor plan 1:100 scale 4. level 1 plan 1:100 scale My project for Design Studio assignment is designing a night club at Paris. My first drawing shows how my ground level fix into the context of my given site, while others three plans show the detail of different area in my building. In my underground level, I have area for storage, staff room, kitchen and car park. For the ground level, there are areas for bar, welcome hall, dance floor, restrooms. The level 1 basically contains bar and seating area. The main circulation in the building is two spiral staircases to connect three levels together. I used line weight to indicate the different between the walls and other things inside the building like furniture and equipments... I experienced with hatch command in my site plan drawings to show the texture and material of different area in the site.

Tutorial 6 : Constrcuction Walk The exercise of the tutorial 6 is Construction Walk. In this tutorial, I followed my construction tutor to many different locations around campus to study 16 different structures. These structures have many functions from support, waterproof, frame to decoration. My task is analyse these structures by drawings and give my own comments for each structure.
2.. Roof at Verge Art Gallery Concrete roof 1and 2 overlap each other to prevent water go inside the building and also to protect the metal element inside the building from water, sun, dust ‌ect. Metal slabs hang under the roof to provide shade and reduce the effects of the weather on the facade

3. Steel column at Verge Art Gallery
4. Concrete slab at verge Art Gallery
The steel columns provide the support to the glass facade the help keep the glass wall stay in 90 degree angle. The rubber elements in the middle of the steel columns and glass play the role as a material to prevent the water go inside and also heal the glass panel together.
The concrete part that overhangs from the wall was built to provide shade and protect the wall under the influences of weather. The little drip that go inside the concrete is the place that water will drop down, it reduces the amount of water go to the below walls. The steel slab stay under glass wall was built for waterproof purpose.

PERSONAL PROJECT
PERSONAL WORK: THE ORIGINAL VILLAGE A piece of Vietnam From 16/9 to 16/10/09, I joined a project hold by Vietnamese Dynamic Student Association in Sydney (VDS), the project was named Vnight which stands for Vietnamese cultural night where Vietnamese studentst at Sydney present and promote Vietnamese images and culture to Australian and international friends. In this event, we often sell Vietnamese food and organise game and Vietnamese music which performed by Vietnamese students. This is an annual event of VDS and also one of the most biggest and most important event of Vietnamese student at Sydney and this year is the 6th year that event were hold by VDS. And this is my first time join this project. The theme for the Vnight this year is “The Original Village... A piece of Vietnam”. The purpose of the design this year is creating a small Vietnamese village to suit with the theme of the event. My task was designing the decoration for this event. This is such a big challenge for me since in Vietnam I always live at city and never travel to small and traditional village.
student from Raffle Design School) decided to hire tent stalls and decoration them to present as houses. We are going to construct a small village gate and a small exhibition. This project was divided into 5 steps: 1. Quick sketches to get the ideas 2. 3D model 3. Material, dimensions and costing analysis 4. Constructing gate, table, chairs, and exhibition stuffs before the event 5. Working on event site on the event day. The event happened successfully on 16 October 2009 at UTS Green courtyard. We had around 1000 Vietnamese and international students join us in this event. I am really happy that I decided to join this project, event though it cost me so much time. However, from this project I also learn a lot, and gain a lot experiences about real life construction, real life material and costing, the things that I haven’t had the chance to study from university. And the moments when my design become alive is such a great moments even though this is just a small project.
After receipt the theme from the organisers, I start doing research about Vietnamese villages and come up with this information. “….Village, or “lang”, is a basis of Vietnam society. Vietnam’s village is the typical symbol of Asian agricultural production. Vietnam’s village typically contains: 1. A village gate. 2. bamboo hedges 3. Communal house where tutelary god is worshiped. 4. Rice field 5. Temple 6. Houses of all families in the village….” According to these information, I and my team ( with including a 3rd year Graphic Design student from UTS and a 3rd year Interior design
Poster for Vnight event
Some quick sketches
After the designs was agreed by all organizers, I start built them up in 3D to get the real sense, and also easy to present with all the organizers and construction volunteers who going to help to set up these design on the event day.
