PROJECT 01 | RESIDENTIAL

Project / Residential Design Course / Portfolio Instructor / Ernest Mariotto Site / Pebble Beach, California

Residential Design

Mr. and Mrs.Smith want to remodel their vacation house in Monterey, CA. They have four kids and two dogs in their family. The original house feels overloaded for them. The environment around the house inspired the family, so they want their home open to nature to assimilate the terrain into their life. When they are away, they will rent the guest house and three apartment units on the first floor. 07

01 | Client The house was stuffy and traditional for the Smith family. They want their home to be bright, airy and suffused with nature. I opened the walls to allow glass windows to bring the beach and the forest into view. The flat-roofed, glass-centric structure takes the site's natural splendor and, through architectural sleight of hand, enhances it. For the interior, I created the curved wall and arched doorways to provide a sense of security for the inhabitants. 10

Residential Design

Mr. and Ms. Kaiko moved into "Dominion Frame" style house in Berkeley Hills in 2016. After a year, they decided to remodel the house into an energy and water efficient residence in order to incorporate modern design and sustainability. The Kaikos like to collect artworks and need space to exhibit their collection The house is open to the view of Berkeley's lush hills and the city below. "I'm so much a visual person," Mr. Kaiko says, "so all glass is important to me. Every time we go upstairs, I see something new in the landscape." 29

03 | Concept Development 1 Generally, in hotels, straight hallways connect all the spaces. 2 Breaking up some of the straight lines allows for a more engaging flow of circulation among the public spaces. 3 Spaces between offices could incorporate open public areas, such us a phonebooth, meeting room and lounge area. And the partition wall between public and private spaces will offer privacy and a sense of security among attendees.

PROJECT 04 | HOSPITALITY

Project / Spacecial Design Course / Portfolio Instructor / Felix Goebel Site / Alameda, California

Hospitality Design

The City of Alameda was founded in 1853. In 1902, a canal was dredged between Alameda and Oakland, officially making the city the island we know today. (Alameda.courts.ca.gov) It is now famous for local festivals, a tradition that continues to draw massive crowds. The owner has planned to transform his grain silo building into a hotel called the Art Hotel. The target guests are people who visit the Alameda Flea Market and San Francisco. The themes of the interior are mystery and wonder, full of surprise, offering customers extraordinary experiences. 75

The Estuary sits north of the existing building site. Inspired by the movement of the water, its undulations and currents, I have combined these organic elements into the building's design. 78

01 | Concept Development 1 The motion of water along Alameda's shore creates a dynamism of movement and energy – an organic rhythm. 2 Currents beneath the water's surface move in a symmetry of co-operative balance. 3 The wave-like design of the interior walls create a spacial experience for the guests. The facade of the building and the rooftop further accentuate the ocean wave design concept. Furthermore, the 3 80

artwork on display in the Art Hotel will be from local artists, to further integrate the hotel as an iconic building of Alameda.
