ATELIER BOW WOW HOUSE ANALYSIS ARC321 REPRESENTATIONS STUDIO II PROFESSOR LIAT MARGOLIS
ONE SOLUTION TO SPACE DEFICIENCIES IN DENSELY POPULATED CITIES SUCH AS TOKYO IS TO CREATE HYBRID BUILDINGS. ATELIER BOW WOW’S DESIGN COMBINES BOTH THEIR OFFICE AND HOME, STACKED ONE ATOP ANOTHER. THE PROGRAMMATIC ARRANGEMENT ALLOWS MANY CONNECTIONS BETWEEN SPATIAL TYPES, AND THESE ARE MEDIATED ACCORDINGLY. THE MAXIMIZING OF USABLE SPACE IS ALLOWED THROUGH INVENTIVE USE OF CIRCULATION ELEMENTS AS WELL AS A VARIETY OF SCREENING ELEMENTS.
THE POROSITY INDEX: EACH ELEMENT USED AS A MEDIATOR BETWEEN SPACES OF DIFFERING PROGRAMS WAS ANALYZED IN TERMS OF VISIBILITY ALLOWED.

THE POROUS DIVIDERS WERE PULLED OUT OF THE BUILDING AND COLOURED ACCORDING TO THE PROGRAMS BEING MEDIATED.

NOLLI MAP OF TORONTO THE GREAT INNOVATION MADE IN THE NOLLI MAP OF ROME WAS THE REDEFINTION OF THE PUBLIC DOMAIN FROM A PERCEPTUAL PERSPECTIVE. ALL SPACES ACCESSIBLE TO THE PUBLIC WERE CONFLATED AND RENDERED AS VOID. THIS SIMPLE DISTINCTION OF PRIVATE AND PUBLIC REPRESENTED AS SOLID AND VOID CREATED A MAP THAT VERY SIMPLY DESCRIBED THE PERMEABILITY OF THE CITY. DESPITE BEING A POWERFUL CONVENTION, HOWEVER, THE CONFIGURATION OF MODERN CITIES RESISTS THIS METHOD OF ANALYSIS AS A TOOL FOR ANALYZING PERMEABILITY. THE SOLID-VOID CONVENTION OF THE NOLLI MAP WAS MANIPULATED TO EXPLORE TWO AREAS. THE FIRST WAS THE POSSIBILITY OF INCLUDING THE VERTICAL DIMENSION OF CITIES IN REPRESENTING ITS PERMEABILITY. THE SECOND, TO REMOVE THE REPRESENTATION OF PHYSICAL MAPPING ELEMENTS SUCH AS STREETS AND BUILDINGS, AND CREATE A MAP THAT SHOWS ONLY PERMEABILITY.
NOLLI MAP ANALYSIS
INTERIOR PUBLIC SPACES
PRELIMINARY STUDIES USING THE CONVENTIONS OF THE NOLLI MAP WERE CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE THE SPREAD OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE OF TORONTO’S DOWNTOWN CORE. SUCCEEDING THIS, THE VERTICAL DIMENSION WAS INVESTIGATED. TORONTO’S DOWNTOWN CORE IS [FILLED] WITH MULTISTOREY BUILDINGS, MANY WITH A LAYER OF PUBLIC SPACE ON THE BOTTOM LEVELS. IT IS NO LONGER SUFFICIENT AS A DESCRIPTION OF THE CITY TO ANALYSE ONLY THE GROUND LEVEL.
LEFT: BUILDINGS WERE EXTRUDED ACCORDING TO NUMBER OF LEVELS AND COLOURED ACCORDING TO DEGREES OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE. RIGHT: THE PLAN OF TORONTO AS A SYSTEM OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE BUILDINGS WAS COMBINED WITH BUILDING HEIGHTS TO CREATE A TOTAL NUMBER OF STOREYS IN THE CROSS SECTION, AND DIVIDED ACCORDING TO PUBLIC AND PRIVATE.

ARC213 DESIGN STUDIO I PROFESSOR CHRISTOS MARCOPOULOS A SERIES OF FORMAL EXERCISES BASED ON A SINGLE KEYWORD WERE CONDUCTED, AND SUBSEQUENTLY APPROPRIATED TO A SITE AS A PAVILION.

3 SITE INSTEAD OF PLACING THE FORM ON TOP OF THE SITE, IT WAS STRETCHED OVER TO BECOME THE SITE. IT WAS ARRANGED AROUND ONE CRACK THAT WAS EXTENDED FROM THE SOUTHWEST AND NORTH-EAST CORNERS OF THE PARK SO THAT NOT ONLY WOULD VISITORS BE DRAWN TO THE PAVILION, BUT ALSO FACILITATE A TRAVERSION FROM THE SOUTHERLY LITTLE ITALY TO KOREATOWN, JUST NORTH OF IT.

INSTANT CITY VER 2.0: INVADING OXFORD ARC331 SUMMER ABROAD STUDIES IN INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURE PROFESSOR TOM BESSAI ARCHIGRAM’S INSTANT CITY HAS INVADED OXFORD UNIVERSITY’S WORCESTER COLLEGE. THE OLD RULES OF STAYING OFF THE LAWN AND COMPOSED BEHAVIOUR ON CAMPUS PREMISES HAVE BEEN DEMPORARILY LIFTED FOR THIS MEDIA SHOW OF NEW IDEAS AND CONTEMPORARY ISSUES. THE SETUP TAKES FOUR DAYS TO INFILTRATE THE CAMPUS AND INVOLVES THE INSTALLMENT OF PNEUMATIC STRUCTURES, IDEAS PYLONS AND AN OVERARCHING COVER HELD UP BY THIRTY-TWO AIR BALLOONS. INSTANT CITY VER.2 IS NOT SIMPLY A MOVING ROCK SHOW, IT IS A FORCED CATALYST FOR CHANGE AND THE UPTURNING OF OBSOLETE LIMITATIONS IN THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT.
RECONSTRUCTION OF A DRESS ARC321 REPRESENTATIONS STUDIO II PROFESSOR LIAT MARGOLIS THE SLEEVELESS DRESS WAS ONLY ONE THIRD STRUCTURE AND TWO THIRDS DECORATIVE FABRIC. IT WORKED AT HIDING THE FIGURE BY CREATING A TIERED BARRIER. TO REMOVE EVERYTHING AND REVEAL THE INNER STRUCTURE WOULD HAVE BEEN FINE, IT WOULD BE REDUCED TO ITS FUNCTION ONLY AND HAVE A PURIST BEAUTY. BUT THERE WAS SOMETHING TO THE MOON-SHAPED ELEMENTS THAT HAD BEEN REMOVED. PERHAPS THEY COULD BECOME AS BEAUTIFUL STRUCTURALLY AS THE PLAIN STRAIGHT-CUT INSIDE PIECES. EACH PIECE WAS REMOVED AND ORDERED, STAYING TRUE TO THE TIERED LEVELS OF THE ORIGINAL DRESS. THE PIECES WERE THEN SEWN TOGETHER AND WRAPPED AROUND, AS IN A COCCOON, SO THAT NO MATERIAL WOULD BE WASTED, AND NO PIECE WOULD BE FOLDED OR MANIPULATED. THE COCCOON DRESS WOULD HAVE A SINGLE LAYER WHERE ALL PIECES WOULD HAVE ITS OWN INFLUENCE ON THE VOLUME OF THE DRESS WITHOUT BEING AT ALL ORNAMENTAL.

STACKABLE HOME CIRCULATION IS WRAPPED AROUND THE KITCHEN AND BATHROOM CORE. IN BUILDINGS DESIGNED USING A STRICT PROGRAMMATIC ALLOCATION INTO SEGREGATED ROOMS, THERE IS A MINIMIZATION OF INTERACTION. THOUGH APPROPRIATE IN SOME CASES, THE HOME REQUIRES THE ENNABLING OF ACCIDENTAL MEETINGS. THE APARTMENT IS DESIGNED FOR A FAMILY THAT CAN DO REQUIRED DAILY TASKS SUCH AS COOKING AND WORKING WHILE MAINTAINING THE POSSIBILITY OF A PASSING INTERACTION. THERE IS NO SPACE ENTIRELY INSULATED FROM THE REST OF THE APARTMENT. SEPARATION IS CREATED BY LIMITING VISUAL ACCESS AND INCREASING PHYSICAL DISTANCE.

ALIEN BLOB INVADES CREVASSE: WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR MAN? ARC314 DESIGN STUDIO III PROFESSOR ANDREW SINCLAIR
WE SUBJECT OURSELVES TO WHAT WE CANNOT UNDERSTAND BY DRAMATIZING IT IN THE THEATRE. IN DOING SO,WE SUSPEND OUR DISBELIEF SO WE MAY REMOVE OURSELVES FROM THE SUBJECTIVE CONSTRAINTS WE HAVE PLACED ON THE REALM OF POSSIBILITY. THE SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF INVOLVES A REORIENTATION AND DISJUNCTION THAT MAY BE ARTIFICIALLY CREATED BY THE BLANK TELEVISION SCREEN OR THE CLOSED CURTAINSOF THE THEATRE. INTRODUCING THIS TO THE ARCHITECTURAL NARRATIVE ALLOWS ONE TO ENTER A SPACE WHERE ARTIFICIAL RATIONALITY MAY BE OVERTURNED.
