This womenswear collection centres around the idea of respect and reverence for nature. It is visually and conceptually inspired by the structures and plants in the Botanic Gardens – a space for nature to be protected and admired. The shapes, textures and colours have been influenced by my experience in the last few months while researching films, architecture and historical examples of worship, respect and natural preservation. It is constructed using mostly couture off-cuts sourced during a research trip to Paris, and second hand fabrics gifted to me by friends and family. The sculptural element, using equine bandaging, has been an important part of this collection as it stems from my research of creating garments from scratch, creating the fabric from strips, minimising waste created in the pre-consumer stage of garment manufacture.

The Palm House of the Botanic Gardens has been a muse to my design process. The misty windows, textured walls and exotic plants in this old glass building have turned into wearables of lustrous print, translucent pleats, textural textile experiments and sculptural, spacious silhouettes. The design and philosophy of the Awaji Island Fishermen’s kimono coats has also been a huge inspiration to the mood and construction for this collection. Visual sources and historical references include ecclesiastical and ceremonial dress, reimagined for 2016 as garments one may wear to admire and contemplate the beautiful natural world we are priveleged to inhabit.
