The aim of design proje¢. gl\len to the 5th semester students • green belt of university school of design wos to make communltv (occupal1onol) housing for the toy makers of Olonnapatna =. ===I The dty is famous for Its wooden toys and lacquerware. These toys are manufbc:tured In traditional or advanced small scale Industries. The site Is surrounded bV slum to the east side and middle class houses towards the west side. About 11 kms north a railway track runs. The southern end Is accompanied with a 3m wide rood. Shops and houses line the road. A fu+---+ king's palace was present at this site which was later demoll..:t----+ ished. In this design • core has been token about the basic needs of a toy maker ,providing them with easy accessibilitv. workshops ample bedrooms for their Iorge family, storage space for finished goods etc. A common civic omnetv is also provided that caters the promotion of toy making Industries as these child friendly toys ore declining slowly. The housing cluster wos designed keeping In mind the co-existence of 1. 2. 3 BHK houses around o common open space. Each house has Its percentage own territorial backyard.

master plan

The form of the house was mainly done with help of the principle of subtractive transformation. This form was accompanied by an intermediate floor at a half landing. The space below this intermediate foor could be used as parking by the tenants or for storage of their personal comodities.

PERCENTAGE OF BUILT TOOPEN

of individual components within the site

Special care has • 60% open been taken to • 40% built provide almost 50 - 50 ratio of built to open. This provides an individual living with the community with breathing space.

Interaction under a gigantic shady banyan tree has been the most popular practice. The two shady trees already existing in the site can be used for the same purpose. Hence one of them is converted as an open air theatre where the bose of the te can also act as a stage for performances.

The internedlote level tends to create a parking space beneath it. The ground floor is elevated above ground level such that their privocv is maintained. Usuollv houses in chonnopotno hove some kind of barricade. But In this communitv housing barricades were avoided to increase interaction. The backspaces are territorial spaces which belongs to on individual house. The ground floor and the gren space is on the some eve level whereas the rood is at a slightiV lower level. This ensures that the Inhabitant does not overlook traffic but the 9reetlenJ outside. The roof is partiallv flat and partially sloplng) Thts enables storage of goods on the terrace. Also in l ase hous&expansion. sloping roof will not hav~to be demolished. Totallv there are eight houses in a chJster.

Design parameters from the book

Alexander's signing this school. Some of those degign priniciples from the book pattern language include : Light on two sides of every room : People gravitate towards those rooms which have light on twa sides and leave the rooms which are lit only from one side unused and emptl,l. Place windows strategically on outer walls (minimum two) so that natural light enters a room from more than one direction.

Filtered light: Light filtered through leaves or tracery is wonderful! but why ? Where the edge of a window or the overhanging eave of a roof is sillouetted against the sky, make a rich detailed tapestery of light and dark. to break up the light and soften it. You con do this with climbing plants trained to climb around the outside of windows or with simple canvas awnings

A Iorge open ploy ground has been provided . The cluster of classrooms ore not completely cut off from the adults. There would be some degree of supervision into the realm. Ceiling Height Varietu: A building in which the ceiling heights are all the same is virtually incapable of making people comfortable. Vary the ceiling height continuously throughout the building, especially between rooms which open up to each other so that the re lative intimacy of d ifferent spaces can be felt. In particular. make cei lings high in rooms which are public or meant for Iorge gatherings ond very low in rooms for one or two people.

Classrooms • Unlike the rugular cube : The classrooms in this design in an abstract of the diffrent age of kids. kids aged ten to eleven are repesented by simple circular classrooms. those of age 12 to 13 are represented with a triangle (no. of edges indicating the difficulties In their life). 14 to 15 with a pentagon and 16 to 17 with a hexagon (highest number of edges representing the highest amount of difficulties. Each classroom is different hence a different experience as the age progresses. A territorial green space between classrooms is to be maintained by the students of a particular classroom. They also act like light wells into the corridor. The bockside of these classrooms are where the children enter from. and front side is dedicated to the teachers.

The selection of the sit was an opti away from the drv ond hectic Dubai greeny. ample water and fresh air of kerala near a famous

waterfa

of room spaces was an important o constant touch with the cool waters as it was anthropometrically matchi1 with a sence of comfort and cozine~

with the designing of my workspac~ soft gurgling sound effect within th~ therapatical quaities. A vertical roc~ ecrice w ithin the house and also inc climbing area ended up on the terre falls would be visible. Basic princip' this space. Ultimately this is were i can accomodate my aging body!
