renewing your MTC membership this year. (You renewed, right?) Thank you to all our super volunteers who lent a hand with Club events and races last year. Thank you to our out-going board members and our in-coming board members. Your service and commitment to the Maine running community is absolutely fantastic. I’d like to sing a special note of appreciation for Mark Grandonico. Mark, who has served as Club president for several years, stepped down this year. The Club is financially in good stead, and membership is growing. Mark’s leadership and enthusiasm is a big part of that. Thank goodness he’s sticking around on the board. I’m honored to be the new Club president. It’ll be tough to fill Mark’s shoes, but I’ll give it my best. Maine Track Club has a long, rich heritage--more than three decades!--of charity and promoting fitness and running in Maine. I’m excited to be a part of it. And, as

a life-long recreational runner with countless finisher T-shirts in my drawer, I’m excited for the opportunity to volunteer and give back to my favorite sport. Maine Track Club is very special to me. When I first moved to Maine from Minnesota, joining MTC was instant access to a community of like-minded running nuts. Saturday morning long runs with the Roasters group introduced me to the geography and stunning beauty of my new home state. MTC members were my first friends here and made it easy to transition from Midwesterner to Mainer. (OK, I know I’ll always be “from away,” but I try!) The Club’s group runs and races have also helped me keep in good shape to stave off the ill effects of sitting most of my waking hours behind a computer screen. So, what makes the Maine Track Club special for you? At the start of a new year and new board term, I invite your feedback on Club activities. What are we doing that

2011 January/February

By Blaine Moore The Biggest Benefit to Keeping a Training Log Training logs are great, especially modern training logs that let you graph workouts, see trends and get the big picture. The single largest benefit for keeping a training log, though, isn’t dependent on fancy graphs or a searchable database of workouts. The biggest advantage is just having access to historical data. You can take advantage of this feature even if you use just a pen and calendar or notebook for tracking your workouts. I wound up hurting my neck a couple of winters ago after a good sized snowstorm that left behind about 15 inches of wet, heavy snow. I spent about three and a half hours shoveling. A few hours later, I got out for a quikc hour on foot after the plows had pushed the snowbanks back. All in all, it seemed it was going to be a great day. That evening, though, as I lay in bed, I turned my head to look towards the door and managed to pull a muscle in my neck. It wasn’t as bad as my birthday back in 2006, when I sat up and heard a loud crack

only to find myself on my back staring at the ceiling and having a few moments to think, “This can’t be good…” before the pain set in. That took me out for months; this time it was only a few days. This was the third time that this had happened to me, the second time being in the Summer of 2008. I remember the first time pretty vividly, as I was pretty naive and thought I’d broken my neck. (Erin had heard the crack in my neck from the next room.) I couldn’t quite remember when the second time was, but my training log came to the rescue. Since I record all of my workouts and the conditions I run in, and I track any sort of injury or excess fatigue, I can usually go back over my log and see exactly what it was that led to my getting hurt. This lets me see the similarities and avoid repeating any stupid things that I might be doing so that I don’t get hurt again. For example, when I have to spend any significant time shoveling (or any shoulderintensive exercise) on a day when it is cold or wet out, I’ve decided that a few hours of

shoveling could substitute as my workout for the day as that tends to be when I have problems that night or the next morning. Another nice thing about being able to look at the training log is to see exactly how long I was out and to make a reasonable guess about how long I need to take it easy for any new injuries I’m researching. Looking at graphs of your training volume and being able to search for specific workouts are great. The single largest benefit of keeping a training log, though, is to track how your training affects you and to look at your historical data so that you can learn from your mistakes. You can also learn from your successes; repeat what works and stop doing the things that hurt you. The log will not lie, and its memory will be much better than yours.

“You have to wonder at times what you’re doing out there. Over the years, I’ve given myself a thousand reasons to keep running, but it always comes back to where it started. It comes down to self-satisfaction and a sense of achievement.” -Steve Prefontaine

Pondering My Wandering Resolutions By Roland Thibault Resolution is defined as “the act of resolving or determining upon an action or course of action, method, procedure, etc.” Usually when we think of making New Years’ Resolutions, this is the definition we use. We decide what it is we would like to do differently in our lives, we come up with a plan, and then after a few weeks many of us have weakened resolve and do not continue with the changes we have planned. Sad, but true. Perhaps we need a new definition. It is my opinion that we usually fail in these endeavors due to “all or nothing” thinking. The problem is not that we aren’t determined to reach our goal, but that we set up steps to reach this goal and then do not stick to those steps. An example of this would be to have the goal of losing weight, with the steps to increase our mileage and to cut our caloric

intake. Then, when we inevitably get off track (the weather gets cold or snowy, for example and we do not want to go out for that run), we decide that we have failed and throw out our goal. Here is where the new definition might help. The world of music defines resolution as “the process in harmony whereby a dissonant note or chord is followed by a consonant one.” Now, I do not profess to be an expert in the world of music, but I find this idea very interesting. The basic idea is that in order to have harmony, a “clunker” note or sound should be immediately followed by a more pleasant sound. The problem would seem to be that many of us hit a sour note and then just give up. Perhaps we need to follow our sour notes or failures with a quick return to more positive thinking. If we do, then the world of music would tell us we will have more harmony in our lives.

As runners, harmony and balance should be what we seek. If our body is not in harmony then we have injury. If our mind is not in harmony then we have frustration. Unfortunately, part of pushing ourselves to reach our goals includes pushing the boundaries of harmony. In our efforts to get faster, to lose weight, to get to the starting line of a new race, we often skirt the line of injury and frustration. Perhaps if we take a lesson from the world of music, if when we sense the beginning of a setback, we readjust our goals a bit, we could remain on the path to our goals instead of the path to discouragement. Good luck with your New Year’s Resolutions! I hope everyone will reach their goals and 2011 will “end on a positive note.” Until next time, keep your feet moving and your eyes on the horizon.

2011 Board Member Introductions MTC President Brock Foreman is a marketing consultant and lives with his wife, Leslie, in Cape w Elizabeth. The Minnesota native El has finished over 20 marathons ha without qualifying for Boston. w Brock loves MTC’s group runs on B Saturday mornings. Sa Chandra Guyot, MTC Vice President, joined the MTC in 2009, and is thrilled to have found a community of wonderful supportive people who put together some great races. She is looking forward to the new role of VP, as well as continual early morning cone moving. Deanne Muich-Michaud is the newly elected MTC Treasurer and has been a Club member for about four years. She got involved through Bob Brainerd, who knew she was a runner and suggested she join Club members on Tuesday nights at the track at Edward Liitle High School. Prior to joining the Club, MuichMichaud was not involved with the running commnunity at all. She ran three to four nights a week alone and is happy to have found others that love the sport. I have met so many wonderful folks through the Club, said MuichMichaud. I hope to bring more awareness of the Club to others in the Lewiston/Auburn community. Jim Haddow, MTC Secretary, is an attorney with Petruccelli, Martin & Haddow, LLP in M Portland. He lives in Portland Po with his wife Michelle and sons, w Hamish and Max, both of whom H are away at college. Haddow has ar served as an MTC board member se at-large for the past two years. at

Kevin Mitchell has been a board member since 2009 and is going into his second year as the equipment manager. After running in high school, he had not run for many years and resumed his love of the sport last year. In 2010, he completed

his first marathon in Bar Harbor. The Maine Track Club is a great way to meet people, said Mitchell. As the equipment manager and a MTC member, Mitchell has met many people and made lots of new friends. Jerry LeVasseur been running competitively in either local, national or international events for 30 years with 1,000 plus aage group wins. He is on the National Senior Games Board N aas well as the Maine Senior Games Board. LeVasseur is past G ppresident of the New England 65 Plus Runners Club as well as past P Maine USATF Long Distance M Running Chairman. Most of R hhis time is spent as a volunteer cross country and track and field cr coach which he has found to be very rewarding. His favorite events are steeplechase, 5K road and cross country, 1,500 and triple jump. LeVasseur hopes to be able to add to the successful MTC. Mark Grandonico is Past President and now a board member atlarge. He has been an avid runner since his retirement from the Coast Guard in 1998. His first race was the Bone Density Dash where he remembers being passed by little old ladies and kids, leading to his running career. That was 36 marathons ago among many other races. When not working on an MTC event, he is also the membership director for the MidCoast Triathlon Club. Mark also serves as the Eastern Region Director and governing Board Member of the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA). Mark just completed the Las Vegas Rock ‘n Roll marathon, knocking Nevada off his 50 State Marathon Club list (31 more to go). After a visit to his Sports Medicine physician a few years M aago, Grandonico was informed that his knees and back only had th sso much life in them. He found a bike and learned how to swim. That bbrought new challenges, as he became a triathlete. Since then, Mark hhas completed numerous sprints and Olympic distances, six half irons and three full Ironmans, setting a PR in each. This year, Mark ir is looking forward to competing in the REV3 Full Iron distance race in Ohio on September 11th.

Run For God - The 5K Challenge is a practical guide to running and a 12-week training plan aimed at running a 5K, but with a Christian focus. People run for many different reasons, and this program is for whoever makes God the center of their lives—or needs to be reminded to do so. The tone is conversational and accessible, and the workout plans, discussion questions and Bible verses make it both a practical resource and a workbook for individuals and groups, especially beginner runners. From advice about shoes and Christian music for MP3 players, to tips on race etiquette, the book will be useful and inspirational.

By Mike Brooks Five Marathons, One Ultra and One Great Trip April 6 - May 4, 2010 :: Part II I woke up shaking, sweating like crazy and felt cold. This continued for the rest of the night. It turned out to be a perfect excuse to skip the 50K trail race [in Spokane] and head to Yellowstone National Park instead. We stopped at Nevada City ghost town and Virginia city’s Boot Hill on the way. Six men were hanged in one day by vigilantes and they are buried on Boot Hill along with other outlaws. We stayed in West Yellowstone for several days. They had just opened much of the the park a few days before we arrived, yet several roads were closed because of the snow. I have visited the park many times and always enjoy the many animals and scenery. This trip, we saw a grizzly bear fairly close, bison, elk, coyotes and a bald eagle or two. One coyote was less than ten feet from us, he looked at us, lifted his leg to go on a tree and calmly walked off. As we made our way to North Dakota, we stayed in some interesting small towns, slept in a hotel that was a converted flour mill, stopped at the center of the U.S.A (including Alaska and Hawaii) and slowed down in a small town that had a police car with a dummy in it dressed as a cop. Once in North Dakota, Walt and I went to Roosevelt National Park which is actually two parks. In the southern park we saw bison, mule deer, prairie dog towns and about 50 wild horses. I have seen wild horses before and they usually won’t let you get close. We could walk up to these, with their three week old foals, within 20 feet or so. They are beautiful animals that looked like someone had just groomed them. In the north section of the park we saw bison, longhorn cattle and bighorn sheep. Both parks have beautiful scenery. The night before the Trestle Valley Marathon in North Dakota, I was sick with a temperature of 102 and chills. It was 50

degrees and windy at the 8:00 am start. When I started the race I felt like I could not catch my breath. Not feeling 100%, I figured It would be a long day but at least it’s not a 50K trail race with a strict cut off time. The course consisted of about 18 miles of asphalt roads and the rest gravel roads. You do most of the paved roads twice, once on the way out, then on the way back. There is one BIG hill that you do twice at miles 8 and 21. With only 25 marathoners, as far back as I was, it was a lonely race. The volunteers were the only people to cheer you on. Feeling beat at the end of the race, I was glad not to have another race tomorrow. This was a nice small marathon with a half marathon, 50 miler with five entrants and a 10K. On our way to Wisconsin, we visited the Great Plains zoo in Sioux Falls, the Spam museum (the kind you eat), a couple of State capitols and a few other attractions. We stayed in Milwaukee, toured the Miller Brewery, Milwaukee Zoo and Harley Davidson Museum. Next it was off to Kenosha for the Wisconsin marathon. Feeling good at the 7:00 am start, I ran for a short distance with a couple of friends. It was sunny, windy and about 55 degrees. There are two sections of out and backs on paved roads and paths that total about 20 miles. There is also a few miles of dirt roads on this mostly flat sometimes scenic course that has views of lake Michigan. Around mile 20, I caught up with my friend Larry Macon, world record holder for most marathons in one year-105. He was way ahead of me but crashed and was walking now. Having done over 700 marathons, you would think he would know how to pace himself by now! We talked and walked for awhile then I went ahead, after picking on him for crashing, to let him suffer alone. Grabbing a brat sausage and cold beer at the end it was off to LaCrosse, a 250-mile ride west but still in Wisconsin. My motel overbooked

and we ended up in a honeymoon suite with with a jacuzzi and king bed. This is not a room I wanted to share with my brother! The room had a heavy odor of cigarettes and Walt slept on the floor. It was a short drive to the race start where I saw a few runners I knew. It was about 55 degrees and sunny at the start of the La Crosse marathon. I was feeling pretty good, just a little tired and sore from yesterday’s race. Around mile 13, where the half marathon goes into a park and finishes, I started to have stomach problems which, I think, were related to me being sick earlier in the trip. By mile 18 I was feeling better even though it was fairly hot by now. I was passing runners the last few miles who were traveling at about the speed that a glacier moves but, hey, it still counts, right ? This race had everything in it. We ran through the downtown, residential, country and industrial areas. There was concrete and asphalt roads, dirt trails and a few big hills. The finish was the same as the half marathon, a nice park. My brother talked to a TV crew at the finish line about our trip and the races so I ended up doing an interview before grabbing some food and drink. We drove about 350 miles so we could be beyond Chicago to miss Monday’s traffic. Another day and a half to home. This, to me, was another great trip. There was only one day of rain, no major catastrophes, we saw a lot of the country and some beautiful animals. I made a few new friends and hopefully learned a little from the Brew to Brew race. Sometimes I put a little too much on my plate when it comes to running but it always seems to work out, even though it might be a struggle.

Doctor’s Corner Exercising When You’re Sick: Dedicated or Short-sighted? By Tom Pulling, MD Winter is a time of increased colds, flu and what I call “the crud”— vaguely low energy, maybe nasal symptoms – you feel bad, but not horrible. You probably want to stay home, but you don’t think you’re truly ill enough to call in sick. Worse yet, you want to run—holiday guilt, New Year’s resolution, training schedule—there are many reasons. Should you tough it out and go through with the run? Are you a slacker if you don’t? Let’s consider the times when you really shouldn’t run—times when you risk making your illness worse or prolonging your symptoms. There is also a fairly simple rule to help guide your decision. Rigorous medical evidence is fairly poor regarding exercise and illness. We know that

vigorous exercise stresses the body and that it temporarily reduces the strength of the immune system. We don’t know, however, exactly what will happen to any individual at a given time. With that limitation, sports medicine physicians recommend a “neck check” to determine whether you are safe to exercise with an illness.
