Colline, montagne, campi coltivati, fattorie, castelli, borghi medievali e mare. Questa è la Toscana. In ogni senso. Dai 600 chilometri di spiaggia alla Maremma. The premises are the old ones, right in the heart of the town, a stone’s throw from the centuries-old Palma del Marinario, the sailor’s palm-tree, an old meeting place on the docks for those who were looking for a place on board a tartane, a trabaccolo or a navicello. Right in front – across the Burlamacca Canal – the Museo della Marineria, the Maritime Museum dedicated to Alberto Gianni, the founder of the legendary Palombari, the deep-sea divers of the salvage ship Artiglio. In such a heritage setting, it is even easier to relax and think of Carlo, the founder, at work behind the walnut-wood desks where Benvenuto and his young sons, Andrea and Paolo, sixth-generation heirs to the first forwarding agent, still sit nowadays. It is impossible here to go over all the stages in what is – so far – the only shipping agency in Italy to have preserved its heritage and be still run by the same family, despite having grown into one of the most important firms in the Mediterranean region as a ship agent and a provider of yacht-management services to mega-yachts on their way or 11

moored at the quayside. But one distinctive trait is just the same as in the old times: here, ship-owners and captains find a 360-degree tailor-made service, available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, combined with a polite, discreet and sensitive attitude. Nowadays, the traditional shipping agency’s role (ship agent, provider of shipping services, boarding and landing, document issuance, bunkering, assistance with public authorities and all transport logistics, handling and distribution of imported and exported goods) is supported by another three divisions, entirely targeted to super-yachts. The drive to face a new challenge and make a definite improvement came from Paolo, the youngest in the dynasty, when the shipping and yachting scenarios changed. In the last seven years, Gruppo Vannucci has become a leader as a ship agent, with a virtually all international clientele, and as a provider of assistance to super-yachts along the Tyrrhenian coast, from Portofino to Cala de Medici, although it has agents and contacts in any port along the Mediterranean coasts, at the crossroads of the big international yachts’ routes. We take care of all that is taken on board and the services we plan, so we are in touch with suppliers and ship-owners alike”. The Super-Yacht Supply Services division is more directly responsible for a wide range of services, from surveying to scheduled and unscheduled ship management, from yacht maintenance to repairs, and the widest range of ship supplies. All this 24 hours a

day, any day of the year, at any port. The refitting service deserves a special mention too, since Vannucci’s Agency can support ship-owners at all stages on its own or assist them in the choice of a shipyard or a supplier, in logistics or budgeting. The latest born in the family, which has turned out to be a big hit with captains, is the SuperYacht Chandlers division, which has its own store at the heart of the docklands. It provides over 7,000 exclusive, selected chandlers’ brands (maintenance products, paints, tenders, riggings, electronic, navigation and safety equipment, cordage, furnishings): the goods are delivered on board the ship, at the berth, by skilled staff, and, once again, 24 hours a day. 2 Luglio & 16 agosto 2014, come da più di 350 anni Dieci Contrade su 17 corrono il Palio del 2 luglio. Analogamente per il Palio del 16 agosto, con estrazione delle tre nella prima Domenica dopo il Palio di luglio. Le 10 Contrade partecipano alla corsa del Palio con un cavallo che viene loro assegnato per estrazione a sorte da una rosa di cavalli selezionati tra quelli fisicamente idonei. La corsa del Palio è preceduta da un corteo (Passeggiata Storica) a cui prendono parte oltre 600 figuranti in rappresentanza delle 17 Contrade e di istituzioni della antica Repubblica di Siena. Il corteo parte dalla Piazza del Duomo nelle prime ore del pomeriggio, e si snoda per alcune vie del centro cittadino prima di sfilare nella Piazza del Campo.

2nd July and 16th August 2014, as for more than 350 years Ten Contrade, or city wards, out of 17 run for the Palio on 2nd July. The same applies to the 16th August Palio, where three are drawn on the first Sunday after the July Palio. The 10 Contrade run in the Palio on a horse that is given them by lots from a shortlist of selected, physically fit horses. The Palio is led in by a parade (Passeggiata Storica) with over 600 walk-ons, standing for the 17 Contrade and some institutions of the ancient Republic of Siena. The parade starts from Cathedral Square early in the afternoon and winds through some of the streets in the old city centre, then puts up a parade in Piazza del Campo.

ll calendario dei festeggiamenti del patrono Sant’Ermete inizia a Forte dei Marmi il 26 agosto con il Palio dei Bagni e il corteo storico dal municipio fino alla chiesa del santo per un omaggio floreale. Il 27 agosto altri eventi in programma: tombolate in piazza, esibizione delle bande folcloristiche per le vie cittadine e la tradizionale “focata”. Infine la giornata del 28 vede il centro rivierasco colmo di bancarelle piene di qualsiasi oggetto, curiosità, e immancabili articoli gastronomici. A conclusione dei festeggiamenti i fuochi d’artificio lanciati dal pontile con il riflesso sulle onde dal mare che offre uno spettacolo molto suggestivo per chi dal proprio yacht ormeggiato al largo può godere del panorama notturno.

Day of Sant’Ermete The calendar of celebrations for Sant’Ermete, the patron saint, starts in Forte dei Marmi on 26th August with the Palio dei Bagni and a pageant, parading from the city hall down to the saint’s church for a floral tribute. More events are due to take place on 27th August: games of bingo in the streets, folk bands playing in the streets, and the traditional “focata” or bonfire. Finally, the 28th August sees the coastal village filling up with booths selling all sorts of items, curios and, of course, foods and drinks. The celebrations are closed by a fireworks display, where the fireworks are lit on the quay and are reflected by the sea waves, offering a very charming sight to those people who may enjoy the nightscape from their yachts moored off the shore.

E’ fissata al 17 agosto, pochi giorni dopo la solennità dell’Assunzione, una notissima festa mariana del golfo spezzino, quella della «Madonna Bianca» di Portovenere: una devozione che riveste di fede cristiana culti antichissimi, forse addirittura fenici. È pia tradizione che l’immagine taumaturga della Madonna Bianca sia giunta alle sponde di questo Borgo l’anno 1204. Particolarmente suggestiva è la processione serale che attraversa il borgo antico illuminato per giungere sulla punta di San Pietro aperta sulla maestà dell’infinito.

The day of the white madonna A very well-known Marian feast takes place in the Gulf of La Spezia on 17th August, a few days after the Feast of the Assumption, the day of «Madonna Bianca», the White Madonna, of Porto Venere: a cult that clothes in Christian faith some extremely old cults, maybe even as old as Phoenician times. According to a saintly tradition, the wonderworking icon of the White Madonna reached the banks of this village in the year 1204. An outstandingly charming event is the evening procession that runs through the candlelit old village, up to the Church of St Peter on the farthest point, with its majestic view of infinity.

La Capannina protagonista

Forte dei Marmi - La Capannina di Franceschi – da sempre locale cult della Versilia - avvia il 2014 dividendosi tra Forte dei Marmi-Firenze-Roma. A Pitti uomo ha fatto il suo esordio il primo capo di abbigliamento griffato La Capannina di Franceschi, che da Firenze sarà lanciato sul mercato mondiale, in virtù della collaborazione nata la scorsa estate con La Martina, la nota azienda Argentina produttrice di abbigliamento sportivo e per il tempo libero. Dall’abbigliamento al cinema il passo è breve e così ancora il locale sarà alla ribalta nazionale grazie a “Sapore di te”, la pellicola dei fratelli Vanzina proiettata nel 2014 in tutte le sale cinematografiche italiane.

Pitti Uomo saw the debut of the very first clothing range by La Capannina di Franceschi, which will eventually be launched from Florence to the rest of the world in partnership with La Martina, the famous Argentinian sports clothes and leisurewear manufacturer. Movies are just a short step away from clothes, so the nightclub will be in the spotlight again in “Sapore di Te”, a film by the Vanzina brothers that will be out in all Italian cinemas in 2014. 14

L’edizione della guida Michelin Italia 2014 raccoglie segnali molto positivi nello scenario della ristorazione del nostro Paese. Molte le novità: 36 Bib Gourmand, 1 ristorante ***, 3** e 29*. La guida Michelin Italia rafforza la seconda posizione sul podio mondiale con 329 ristoranti stellati, confermando l’eccellente qualità della cucina italiana. In Toscana, una delle sette regioni con un ristorante tre stelle, brilla una nuova stella per un totale di 26 ristoranti (1 ***, 4 **, 21 *). Due le novità tra i ristoranti Bib Gourmand, esercizi che si distinguono per l’alta qualità della ristorazione con menu completo a meno di 30 €, ora a quota 33. La Toscana risulta oggi al terzo posto per numero di Bib Gourmand. Con 59 ristoranti in guida segnalati per l’alta qualità della ristorazione, la Toscana si conferma una meta molto interessante per il turismo enogastronomico. La novità per quanto riguarda i ristoranti stellati toscani riguarda il Castello di Fighine a San Casciano dei Bagni (SI). The Michelin Guide Italia 2014 is unfailingly a hit for the restaurant scene of our country. There are lots of new happenings: 36 Bib Gourmands, 1 *** restaurant, 3 ** restaurants and 29 * restaurants. The Michelin Guide Italia puts Italy in second place on the world list again, with 329 starred restaurants, evidence of the excellent quality of Italian cuisine. La nave Costa Concordia, affondata davanti all’Isola del Giglio due anni fa, dovrebbe lasciare l’isola del Giglio nel giugno 2014. Lo ha annunciato il capo della protezione civile Franco Gabrielli, il quale ha anche aggiunto che entro il mese di marzo sarà individuato il porto dove avverrà lo smaltimento della nave. È stata a tal fine indetta una gara che inizialmente ha viste interessate 30 societá. Attualmente quelle che hanno i requisiti sono 12 che appartengono a 6 Paesi e 5 sono in Italia. Se sarà individuato un porto italiano sarà possibile il trasferimento diretto dall’isola del Giglio.

In 2014, the Navicelli development has become home to an Ikea shop, even bigger than the other one in Tuscany, at Campi Bisenzio, halfway between Prato and Florence.

The Costa Concordia cruise ship that sank off the Isle of Giglio two years ago should be leaving the Isle of Giglio in June 2014. It has been announced by Franco Gabrielli, Head of Civil Defence, who added that the port where the ship will be stripped will be decided by March. A tender has been launched, and the first 30 companies have already put in heir bids. Currently, twelve of them are eligible, they are based in 6 different countries, and 5 are based in Italy. If an Italian port is chosen, then the ship will be directly moved there from the Isle of Giglio.

Dopo anni di attesa è finalmente aperto a Pisa, nel contenitore degli Arsenali Medicei appena restaurati, il museo delle navi romane. Le navi vennero alla luce nel 1998 a due passi dalla stazione ferroviaria di Pisa San Rossore nel corso di alcuni lavori di routine e subito si capì che si trattava di un ritrovamento eccezionale, probabilmente senza paragoni nella storia d’Europa. Si tratta di una trentina di imbarcazioni, o meglio dei loro resti, affondate in un periodo di tempo lunghissimo, con i loro carichi preziosi, anfore, monete, gioielli, e più esattamente fra il terzo secolo avanti Cristo e il settimo dopo Cristo, quando il porto di Pisa, porto fluviale alla confluenza di un canale con il fiume Serchio, era molto importante. A distanza di quindici anni, e dopo lunghissimi restauri ancora parzialmente in corso, il mondo potrà finalmente iniziare a scoprire questo tesoro riemerso dalle viscere della terra.

Museum of roman ships After years and years of waiting, at last the Museum of Roman Ships has been opened in the just-restored Arsenali Medicei, the Medici Shipyards. The ships were unearthed in1998, a stone’s throw from the train station at Pisa San Rossore, during some routine excavations, and it was immediately clear that that was no ordinary finding, probably an unprecedented discovery in the history of Europe. They are about thirty ships, or better, the remains of about thirty ships, sunk over an extremely long time, with their precious cargoes, amphorae, coins, jewels, exactly between the third century BC and the seventh century AD when the port of Pisa, a river port located where a canal meets the river Serchio, used to be very important. Fifteen years later and after a very long restoration work that is partly still going on, at last the world may begin to appreciate this treasure, dug up from the bowels of the earth. 18

Museo Stibbert

Dopo un lungo periodo di restauro è torna visibile al pubblico la Loggia Impero del Museo Stibbert di Firenze, che ospita una ricca collezione di bronzi dorati. Con questo recupero prosegue l’attività di ripristino degli ambienti della casa-museo di Frederick Stibbert avviati già da diversi anni con l’intento di restituire al pubblico quello che era stato l’allestimento delle sale della villa nell’Ottocento. Questo ulteriore intervento consente di presentare la ricca selezione di arredi dell’epoca Impero appositamente acquistati per la sala, insieme ad alcuni importanti dipinti tra i quali spiccano i ritratti della famiglia Baciocchi e il bozzetto per il famoso quadro dipinto da Karl P. Arezzo Luminosa città collinare della Toscana orientale, Arezzo vanta un’origine antichissima. Fu una delle maggiori lucumonie etrusche e successivamente città romana d’importanza strategica. Grosseto The old city centre, girdled by the green hexagon of the ramparts that Francis I had renewed (1574), is outlined by the modern city grid. After the Saracen devastation of 935, the survivors of the already-Etruscan Roselle took shelter here, in the Ombrone plain, about twenty miles from the sea. The fortunes of this place went with the cycles of reclamation and malaria that has been defeated now. Since 1336, Siena had steadily ruled the city, which did not surrender to the Medici until 1559, after Montalcino. It is a market town and the administrative capital of the fervently agricultural Tuscan side of Maremma. Places not to be missed include the late 13th century Cathedral, the Archaeological and Art Museum, the walls and the Church of St Francis; in the surroundings, the wildlife oasis of Maremma and the Etruscan ruins at Roselle.

Massa-Carrara Carrara, il più grande e importante centro mondiale per l’escavazione, la lavorazione e il commercio del marmo, sorge ai piedi della Alpi Apuane adagiata in una conca di verdeggianti colline. Il nome della città, deriva dalla radice “kar” (pietra) e ne testimonia le antichissime origini.Da piccolo villaggio dei pacifici liguri-apuani, divenne emporio commerciale della vicina Luni colonia dei Romani i quali, per primi, sfruttarono e valorizzarono i ricchi giacimenti marmiferi. Per la sua posizione strategica, particolarmente favorevole, e per la sua naturale ricchezza economica offerta dal marmo, fu oggetto di continue contese. Nel medioevo subì le dominazioni dei Bizantini e dei Longobardi e nel 1235 si eresse a libero Comune assumendo lo stemma con la

ruota che ancor oggi conserva. Nel periodo delle Signorie fu Marchesato sotto i Malaspina, Principato con i Cybo e Ducato sotto i D’Este. Infine col plebiscito del 1859 avvenne l’annessione al Regno d’Italia.

Massa-Carrara Carrara, the world’s largest and most important marble-quarrying, -processing and -selling centre, rises at the foot of the Apuan Alps, nestling in a dell of luxuriant hills. From being a small village of peaceful LigurianApuan people, it turned into the trading centre of the nearby Luni, a colony of the Romans who were the first to exploit and boost the rich marble fields. In the Middle Ages, it was captured by the Byzantines and the Lombards, and in 1235 it rose up as a free ‘Comune’, taking the coat of arms with the wheel that it keeps to this day. In the age of the Signorie, it was a Marquisate under the Malaspina family, a Principality under the Cybo family, and a Duchy under the D’Este family. Finally, after the 1859 plebiscite, it was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.

Lucca

Lucca, one of Tuscany’s city states, is the only one that remained independent until 1847. Unique evidence of the jealous care with which Lucca’s patrician families defended the freedom of the “Civitas”, is its intact walls (XVIXVII cent.), 4.250 km in perimeter, with 10 ramparts, one platform and the glacises still partly intact and restored, all still there. Salire fino in cima alla cupola del Brunelleschi a Firenze è un’esperienza unica e mozzafiato: sia perché la vista dall’alto è stupefacente sia perché per poter arrivare sul punto più alto bisogna salire ben 463 gradini... La maggior parte dei turisti rimangono quasi sempre soddisfatti alla semplice ammirazione della cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore dall’esterno, ma noi siamo qui per convincervi che lo sforzo fisico necessario per salire così tanti scalini ne vale davvero la pena. Naturalmente questa raccomandazione non vale per i pazienti cardiopatici operati di recente o a coloro che soffrono di vertigini, ma è perfetta per i bambini che amano l’avventura e per gli adulti che vogliono vedere la superba vista della città dall’alto. Dopo essere entrati nella cattedrale, cercate la cupola: il magnifico affresco del Vasari del Giudizio Universale è proprio sopra di voi ! A sinistra dell’altare maggiore si trova l’ingresso alle scale per raggiungere la cima della cupola. Il biglietto comprende la visita alla Galleria dell’Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore, alla Cupola del Brunelleschi, al campanile di Giotto , al Battistero di San Giovanni e alla cripta di Santa Reparata. Di solito, i visitatori iniziano a salire le scale pieni di energia e alla massima ve27

locità. Risparmiate il fiato, dimenticate le chat e respirate profondamente. A un certo punto la scala diventa molto stretta e per poter passare bisogna attendere la discesa delle persone che arrivano dalla direzione opposta. A metà strada verso la cima c’è un percorso lungo la base della cupola, dove si può meglio osservare l’affresco e fare una pausa. Giusto quando pensate di non farcela più ecco che arrivano gli ultimi scalini: la ricompensa per tutti i vostri sforzi è appena sopra la vostra testa! Affacciate la testa fuori e ... una delle più belle città del mondo è ai vostri piedi! La vista a 360 ° è come una pittura: colline, edifici famosi, migliaia di persone piccole come formiche.

At some point, the staircase gets very narrow and if you want to move on you have to wait for the people coming from the opposite direction to come down. Midway to the top, there is a trail along the base of the dome, where you can see the fresco better and take a break. Just when you think you can’t take it any more, here come the last steps: the reward for all your efforts is just above your head! Lean out and …. One of the most beautiful cities in the world is at your feet! The 360-degree view looks like a painting: hills, famous buildings, thousands of antsized people.

Firenze 2014: un anno ad arte

Da un omaggio a Michelangelo, a 450 anni dalla sua morte, a un’antologica mostra sullo scultore Baccio Bandinelli, fino ai ‘tesori cartacei’ contenuti negli archivi e nelle biblioteche di Firenze, mai mostrati al grande pubblico. Sono nove le rassegne che nel 2014 sono proposte nei principali musei statali di Firenze in occasione dell’ottava edizione di ‘Un anno ad arte’. Ad aprire il nuovo ciclo di esposizioni è stata, il 28 gennaio alla Galleria Palatina di Palazzo Pitti, “Una volta nella vita”: tesori dagli archivi e dalle biblioteche di Firenze, che propone all’attenzione dei visitatori ben 133 pezzi tra documenti manoscritti, libri e disegni, provenienti da 33 enti cittadini. La Sala Bianca di Palazzo Pitti ospita poi la prima mostra monografica completa di Jacopo Ligozzi. Agli Uffizi è possibile 31

visitare una selezione del maestro Molinari Pradelli, cui segue il primo grande evento dedicato alla pittura del ‘naturalismo’ fiorentino tra la fine del XVI e il XVII secolo. La Galleria dell’Accademia rende omaggio a Michelangelo Buonarroti con ‘’una mostra dedicata alle immagini potenti e universalmente diffuse dell’arte e specialmente della statuaria del sommo artista, dalla pittura di storia alla fotografia contemporanea. L’Accademia ospita poi anche una mostra sul collezionismo dei ‘Primitivi’, dedicata alla pittura del Tre e del Quattrocento. Firenze 2014: un anno ad arte From a tribute to Michelangelo, 450 years after his death, to a retrospective exhibition on sculptor Baccio Bandinelli, through to the ‘paper treasures’ from the archives and libraries of Florence, never shown to the general public before. Nine are the exhibitions that have been planned in 2014 in the main state museums of Florence to coincide with the eighth ‘Un anno ad arte’. The new cycle of exhibitions was opened, at the Galleria Palatina in Palazzo Pitti on 28th January, by “Una volta nella vita”: treasures from the archives and libraries of Florence, showing visitors as many as 133 pieces, including manuscripts, books and drawings from 33 city institutions. Then, the White Hall at Palazzo Pitti hosts the first full monographic exhibition of Jacopo Ligozzi’s works. The Uffizi show a selection of works by the great artist Molinari Pradelli, followed by the first big exhibition about Florentine ‘naturalistic’ painting between the late XVI century and the XVII century. The Galleria dell’Accademia pays tribute to Michelangelo Buonarroti with an exhibition of the powerful, universallyknown images of the supreme artist’s works, especially his statues, from historic paintings to contemporary photographs. Then, the Academy will also host an exhibition of collections of the ‘Primitives’ about 14th and 15th century painting. The Museo degli Argenti, or Silverware Museum, gives pride of place to the outstanding Medici reliquaries, while the Museo Nazionale del Bargello launches the first exhibition ever held about Baccio Bandinelli. L’oro del battistero di Firenze, torna a brillare la Porta del Ghibert The gold on the baptistery of Florence shines again: ghiberti’s door

Il restauro della celebre Porta Nord del Battistero di Firenze di Lorenzo Ghiberti, in corso dopo 600 anni, sta ottenendo dei risultati eccezionali, al di là di ogni aspettativa: sotto lo sporco e le incrostazioni superficiali di secoli è riemersa la splendida doratura originale presente nei rilievi scultorei delle 28 formelle, nelle testine di Profeti e Sibille e nel bellissimo fregio a motivi vegetali brulicante di piccoli animali. E’ la conferma definitiva che il Ghiberti aveva dorato anche la seconda porta monumentale del Battistero, realizzata tra il 1403-1424, ma a differenza della successiva Porta del Paradiso la doratura ad 33

amalgama di mercurio fu eseguita solo sui rilievi scultorei lasciando il fondo bronzeo. Un contrasto, tra la luminosità dell’oro e lo scuro del bronzo, che rende quest’opera straordinaria, al pari della bellezza della Porta del Paradiso. L’eccezionale restauro è diretto ed eseguito dall’Opificio delle Pietre Dure di Firenze su incarico dell’Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore. Si tratta di un restauro che terminerà nel 2015 e interamente finanziato con fondi privati messi a disposizione dalla stessa Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore e della Guild of the Dome Association, di cui fanno parte imprenditori di tutto il mondo.

The restoration of the famous northern door of the Baptistery of Florence, by Lorenzo Ghiberti, that is taking place after 600 years, is achieving striking results that are beyond all expectations: under the centuriesold dirt and crusts on the surface of the door, the restoration unearthed the magnificent original gilding on the raised sculptures of the 28 panels, the heads of the Prophets and Sibyls, and the beautiful frieze with plants teeming with small animals. This ultimately proves that Ghiberti had also gilded the second monumental door of the Baptistery, made between 1403 and 1424, but, unlike the later Heaven’s Door, the mercury amalgam gilding was applied only on the raised sculptures while the bronze ground was left untouched. A contrast between the shine of gold and the dark of bronze that makes such work extraordinary, as beautiful as Heaven’s Door. The exceptional restoration was directed and completed by Florence’s Opificio delle Pietre Dure for the Vestry Board of St Maria del Fiore. The restoration will end in 2015 and has been fully funded by private funds provided by the Vestry Board of St Maria del Fiore and the Guild of the Dome Association, whose members are businessmen from all over the world.

Camminare sopra un’opera d’arte Il 2013 ha segnato un anno ricco di sorprese per i fortunati visitatori del Duomo di Siena. A partire dallo scorso 18 agosto 2013 e per tutto l’anno, i turisti che si sono recati in visita al Duomo, hanno potuto ammirare i segreti nascosti sul pavimento alla Porta del Cielo. E’ stata un’occasione unica per ammirare il prezioso tappeto di marmo, che il Vasari definì il più bello e magnifico mai esistito e che di solito viene coperto per proteggerlo dal calpestio dei visitatori e dei fedeli. Sul pavimento del Duomo hanno infatti lavorato dal Trecento all’Ottocento grandi artisti senesi come il Sassetta e Domenico di Bartolo, ma anche Pinturicchio, autore, nel 1505, del celebre riquadro con il Monte della Sapienza, che rappresenta la strada verso la virtù come raggiungimento della serenità interiore. Splendida la parte disegnata da Domenico Beccafumi che a Siena perfezionò la tecnica del commesso marmoreo tanto da ottenere risultati di luci e ombre simili al chiaro-scuro del disegno. Walking over a work of art 2013 has been a very eventful year for the lucky visitors to the Cathedral of Siena. Starting on 18th August 2013 and throughout the year, the tourists that went visiting the Cathedral could enjoy the secrets hidden on the floor of Heaven’s Door. It was the opportunity of a lifetime to see the precious marble carpet that Vasari defined as the finest and most magnificent ever existed, and that is usually covered to protect it from visitors and devotees walking all over it. The floor of the Cathedral was actually worked over from the 14th century to the 19th century by such great Siena-born artists as Sassetta and Domenico di Bartolo, as well as Pinturicchio, who in 1505 made the famous square with the Mountain of Wisdom, which shows the road to virtue as the

achievement of inner peace. The part drawn by Domenico Beccafumi, who perfected the opus sectile technique in Siena so much that he managed to draw lights and shadows that look like drawn chiaroscuros, is magnificent. But the Cathedral has more surprises in store: at the same time, it continued the special opening of “La Porta del Cielo”, the Cathedral’s attics where no one, except professionals, had been allowed in for centuries. www.operaduomo.siena.it

L’antro del Corchia

ll complesso del Monte Corchia, nel Parco Regionale delle Alpi Apuane, costituisce il sistema carsico più esteso d’Italia e uno tra i maggiori d’Europa, sviluppandosi per oltre 60 km di gallerie, con dislivelli di 1200 m e con cinque milioni di storia geologica alle spalle. Benché l’esplorazione della grotta, la terza per profondità in Italia, sia iniziata già nell’800, solo nel 2001 il grande pubblico ha potuto ammirarne le maestose colonne di stalattiti e stalagmiti, le colate, i crostoni ed anche le concrezioni subacquee come le “perle di grotta”. Arrivati al paese di Levigliani di Stazzema, un bus navetta conduce all’ingresso dell’Antro del Corchia, ricavato in una cava di marmo abbandonata, a 860 m sul livello del mare. Si procede in un tunnel artificiale per circa 170 m fino alla vera e propria entrata della cavità carsica. Sulla destra, quasi a controllarne l’accesso, c’è il“Gendarme”, una tozza e conica concrezione stalagmitica. Attraversando la “Galleria Franosa”, si penetra nella “Galleria degli Inglesi”. Qui lo sguardo si posa sui colori rosso ruggine, bianco e bruno delle concrezioni: non a caso era stata chiamata “Galleria Dipinta”, poi il nome è cambiato in omaggio alla nazionalità degli speleologi che la scoprirono. Il silenzio della montagna è interrotto da una piccola cascata che scende giù da un alto camino; nella “Galleria del Venerdì” un’imponente concrezione a colata ha la forma di un’aquila con le ali dispiegate. Si oltrepassano le acque, non molto profonde, del “Laghetto del Venerdì”; si superano le fitte concrezioni fossili della “Foresta Pietrificata”, finché ci si trova di fronte al prodigio naturale della “Galleria delle Stalattiti”. Difficile paragonarla ad altri ambienti sotterranei, seppur bellissimi: un grosso pilastro sembra, da solo, voler sor35

reggere l’intera volta, dove le concrezioni, addossandosi le une alle altre, scendono lungo le pareti per tuffarsi in piccoli specchi d’acqua. Per le visite sono possibili due percorsi speleologici (entrambi di 3h): la Galleria della Neve e il Ramo del Fiume, non sono consigliabili a chi ha difficoltà deambulatorie perchè il percorso ha 1800 scalini. La grotta ha una temperatura costante di +7,6 °C, per cui si consiglia un abbigliamento adeguato (maglione, scarpe comode); è possibile noleggiare scarpe con suole di gomma e felpe. Nei dintorni sono consigliati: le Marmitte dei Giganti (enormi cavità erose dall’acqua, nei pressi della galleria del Cipollaio), l’Isola SantaStazzema, la Pieve romanica di Santa Maria Assunta a Stazzema e il Museo storico della resistenza - Parco nazionale della pace di Sant’Anna di Stazzema. The Corchia caves The complex of Mount Corchia, in the Regional wildlife park of the Apuan Alps, is the largest karst system in Italy and one of the largest in Europe, winding its way through over 60 km of tunnels, with 1200 mt gradients and five million years of geological history under its belt. Even if the cave, the third deepest in Italy, began to be explored in the 19th century, it was only in 2001 that the general public could enjoy its impressive columns of stalactites and stalagmites, the flows and hardpans, and even the underwater concretions such as the “cave pearls”. Once in the village of Levigliani di Stazzema, a shuttle bus will take you to the entrance to the Corchia caves, dug into a deserted marble quarry, 860 metres above sea level. Then, you walk about 170 metres down an artificial tunnel to the actual entrance to the karst cave. On the right, as if watching over the entrance, there is the “Gendarme”, a stocky, tapered stalagmite concretion. You walk through the “Galleria Franosa”, the crumbly tunnel, and into the “Galleria degli Inglesi”, the British tunnel. Hence your eyes will rest on the rusty red, white and brown colours of

the concretions: it is not by chance that it has been named “Galleria Dipinta”, the painted tunnel, then the name was changed as a tribute to the nationality of the speleologists who discovered it. The silence of the mountain is broken by small waterfalls that flow down a tall stack; in the “Galleria del Venerdì” or Friday tunnel, a massive flow concretion is shaped like a spread-eagle. You walk across the fairly shallow waters of the “Laghetto del Venerdì”, the Friday Pond; past the thick concretions of the “Foresta Pietrificata”, the Petrified Forest, you will find the natural miracle of the “Galleria delle Stalattiti”, the Stalactite Gallery. It can hardly be compared to any other underground habitat, no matter how beautiful: one big pillar seems to be wanting to hold up the entire vault on its own, with the concretions, leaning against each other, running down the walls and diving into small expanses of water. Visitors may take one of two speleological tours (both lasting 3 hours): the Galleria della Neve, the Snow Gallery, and the Ramo del Fiume, the River Branch; they are not suitable for mobility-impaired people, since the trail has 1800 steps. The grotto has a constant temperature of +7.6 °C, so appropriate clothing (thick jumper, comfortable shoes) is recommended; rubbersoled shoes and sweatshirts are available to hire. Other places to see in the surroundings: the potholes, huge cavities eroded by water, near Galleria del Cipollaio, Isola Santa-Stazzema, the Romanesque church of the Assumption at Stazzema and Museo Storico della Resistenza – Parco Nazionale della Pace at Sant’Anna di Stazzema. La casa natale di Giosuè Carducci a Valdicastello

Dalla Pieve di S. Giovanni e S. Felicita di Valdicastello Carducci, percorrendo altri tre chilometri verso il paese troviamo la casa dove, da Michele Carducci ed Ildegonda Celli, nacque nel Luglio 1835 il poeta Giosuè Carducci. Il Carducci, trasferitosi da Pietrasanta con la famiglia quando aveva solo tre anni, restò legato alla sua terra natale, più volte ricordata nei suoi versi, e vi fece ritorno il 16 giugno 1877 ed il 1° e 29 marzo 1890. In occasione della prima di queste visite scrisse in una lettera: Quel che mi piace è Pietrasanta: bellissima cittadina, con piazza unica, una cattedrale da grande città, e, sfondo, le Alpi Apuane. E che paese all’intorno! che monti, che verde, che ombre, che fiumi, che ruscelli risonanti freschi sotto i castagni e gli olivi fra il verde. Con Decreto Regio del 17 marzo 1907 (il poeta era morto il 16 febbraio 1907) la casa natale di Giosue Carducci fu dichiarata monumento nazionale. Nel giardino antistante spicca un grosso busto marmoreo del poeta. L’arredamento è rimasto quello autentico, con il letto dove nacque Giosuè e lo studiolo del padre. L’edificio è stato dichiarato monumento nazionale da Vittorio Emanuele III, l’atto regio è esposto alla parete dell’ingresso. La casa è oggi

di proprietà del Comune di Pietrasanta ed è visitabile in alcuni giorni della settimana.

Giosue’ Carducci’s home at Valdicastello From the parish church of S. Giovanni and S. Felicita at Valdicastello Carducci, move three kilometres closer to the village and you will find the home where poet Giosuè Carducci was born in July 1835, the son of Michele Carducci and Ildegonda Celli. Coming from Pietrasanta with his family when he was just three years old, Carducci never broke the bond with his homeland that he often mentioned in his poems and went back there on 16th June 1877 and on 1st and 29th March 1890. During the first of those visits, he wrote, in a letter: What I like is Pietrasanta: a beautiful village,

with a unique square, a cathedral like a big city, and on the background the Apuan Alps, and what a countryside all around it! What mountains, what greenery, what shadows, what rivers, what fresh chiming streams under the chestnuts trees and the olive trees among the greenery. Under a Royal Decree dated 17th March 1907 (the poet died on 16th February 1907),

Giosuè Carducci’s home was declared a national monument. A big marble bust of the poet stands out in the garden. The furniture is still the original one, with the bed where Giosuè was born and his father’s study. The building was declared a national monument by Vittorio Emanuele III, and the Royal deed is on display on the entrance wall. Today, the house is owned by the Municipality of Pietrasanta and can be visited a few days a week. 36

La Toscana da bere

La Toscana produce tantissimi vini pregiati, soprattutto rossi, e la qualità della sua produzione ha fatto sì che questi siano conosciuti ed apprezzati in tutto il mondo. L’intera regione vanta numerosissime zone di produzione diverse classificate a indicazione geografica tipica o IGT, e ben 39 DOC, per un totale di 16 diverse strade del vino istituzionali. Le Denominazioni di origine controllata e garantita o DOCG al momento sono 11; oltre alle storiche presenze di Brunello di Montalcino, Nobile di Montepulciano, Chianti Classico, Chianti, Vernaccia di San Gimignano e Carmignano si sono aggiunte negli ultimi anni: Morellino di Scansano, Montecucco Sangiovese, Suvereto, Val di Cornia Rosso ed Elba Aleatico Passito. L’intera regione è collinare, ed è dotata di un clima mite grazie all’estesa costa che si affaccia sul Mar Ligure e sul mar Tirreno. Nelle provincie di Firenze e di Siena si producono vini, alcuni piuttosto antichi, molto conosciuti: il celeberrimo Chianti Classico, l’apprezzatissimo Brunello di Montalcino, il Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Il Tignanello (di Antinori). Secondo la più recente classifica di Wine-Searcher. com, famoso sito americano del settore, sono infatti alcuni dei grandi vini toscani gli unici a inserirsi tra i vini francesi nella classifica dei vini più ricercati. Si tratta del Bolgheri Sassicaia di Tenuta San Guido (14° posto), del Tignanello della Marchesi Antinori (alla posizione n°30), seguono poi il Masseto (41°) e il Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia (44°) entrambi prodotti dall’omonima Tenuta, e infine il Solaia (62°), sempre della Mar-

A drinker’s guide to Tuscany Tuscany produces lots of excellent wines, mainly red wines, and they are so good they are known and loved all over the world. The entire region boasts a huge number of different wine-making regions, classed as Indicazione Geografica Tipica or IGT (Typical Geographical Indication), and as many as 39 classed as DOC (Controlled Designation of Origin), totalling 16 different official wine routes. Right now, the DOCGs (Guaranteed and Controlled Designation of Origin) are 11; in addition to the long-established Brunello di Montalcino, Nobile di Montepulciano, Chianti Classico, Chianti, Vernaccia di San Gimignano and Carmignano, the latest entries include: Morellino di Scansano, Montecucco Sangiovese, Suvereto, Val di Cornia Rosso and Elba Aleatico Passito. It is a hillside region, with a mild climate because of the wide coast that looks on to the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas. The areas around Florence and Siena produce very well-known wines, some of which are fairly old: the very famous Chianti Classico, the much sought-after Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Tignanello (from Antinori). The areas around Livorno and Grosseto, where the sea makes the climate milder, produce such wines as Bolgheri Sassicaia, Montecucco and Ansonica. sweet Vinsanto and the small DOCG of Carmignano. As to white wines, let’s mention the Vernaccia di San Gimignano, which is made in a small area of Tuscany between Siena, Pisa and Florence. Tuscan wines are among the most sought after wines abroad as well. According to the latest list by Wine-Searcher.com, a very famous American wine website, some of Tuscany’s greatest wines are the only ones that can stand up to their French counterparts as the most sought-after wines. They are: Bolgheri Sassicaia di Tenuta San Guido (14th place), Tignanello della Marchesi Antinori (30th place) and, lower

down, Masseto (41st) and Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia (44th), both made in the estate of the same name, and, last, Solaia (62nd), also from Marchesi Antinori. Wine and Tuscany are really a match made in heaven: it’s true!
