Back to School Starters: Essential Tech for Students Summer is coming to an end and school doors are opening back up. Are you prepared for this year? Read below for some technology tips to help the student in your life succeed: 1. Is your kid prodding you to update their word processing, spreadsheet, or design software? Don’t forget that many stores offer discounts to students on products from laptops to layout programs. You will likely need to present some proof of enrollment, such as a student ID card, report card, or tuition bill. Be sure to take those with you on the day of your purchase. 2. Make sure your child is ready on their first day with books in hand by obtaining their reading list as soon as possible. Order their books online instead of being surprised at the bookstore when the textbook you need has sold out. Your child may also be eligible for a student discount at certain bookstores, so be sure to take advantage of that as well. 3. With students spending more and more time on the Internet, their computers are susceptible to malware attacks now more than ever. Start the year off prepared with software like PC Tools’ Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus. Using multiple techniques to stop threats at every entry point, this software will continue to monitor your PC throughout the school year so that nothing distracts your child from their studies. 4. If your youngster has ever lost an essential file before turning in an assignment, you know the frustration and lost time that comes as a result. Never experience this again once you’ve installed PC Tools’ Simple Backup onto your kid’s external hard drive. This software will automatically back up your files on up to 3 computers, no prompting needed. With these two products installed on their system, you and your child will sleep better knowing that nothing can get between them and their academic success. With so much to think about in the fall, these tips should save you the time and energy you need to help your kid start school on the right foot.
Organizing Your Computer: Refresh for Fall If you didn’t get to your computer during Spring Cleaning, now’s the time to get organized. Don’t know where to start? Read below for a few pointers: 1. First, delete any unnecessary items. The more programs and files you have on your computer, the slower it will run. Make sure to empty your Recycle Bin regularly so that files don’t accumulate and slow down your system. Video files also take up a lot of memory, so be sure to delete any movies, television shows, or podcasts that you no longer watch. If you’ve downloaded software in the past, be sure to delete any programs that you don’t need or use anymore. 2. Make sure to clean out your email folders regularly. Delete old, unnecessary emails and unsubscribe from email newsletters that you don’t read. Learn how to identify and block spam emails within your email provider so that you don’t continue receiving them. 3. Strive to keep files in folders. When files start to accumulate on your desktop or in a general documents folder, you can forget what they are, and as a result, whether or not you should delete them. Remember, you can always check when a file was first created, modified, or accessed. 4. Try using tools like those included in PC Tools Performance Toolkit to keep your computer running smoothly. This type of software helps speed up your computer and optimize its performance, among a host of other benefits. 5. Attempt to keep the number of programs you use simultaneously to a minimum. Although tempting, too much multitasking can cause your computer to slow down and even crash. Although these suggestions might seem somewhat tedious now, they are sure to save you time and frustration in the future.

What is Browser Hijacking? Browser hijacking occurs when browser hijacking software, a type of malware, uses special code to change your browser settings. The software embeds itself in your browser and usually causes your homepage and your “favorites,” or “bookmarks,” to redirect to objectionable sites, such as gambling or pornographic content. They might even redirect to additional sites that infect computers. The software will likely plague your computer with adware, which causes annoying pop-up ads to appear continuously throughout your browsing session. It may also create desktop shortcuts to random websites or delete, change or damage your files. Your computer might generally slow down. You can accidentally download browser hijacking software through opening contaminated email, file-sharing, visiting a hijacker website, or downloading a seemingly harmless file. Other browser hijacking software is installed through viruses, Trojans, or worms. It’s as easy as accidentally clicking on an infected website and downloading an application (called an ActiveX application) that then downloads itself onto your browser and hijacks it. Oftentimes the hijacker software blocks antispyware websites so that you remain helpless, unable to remove the malware. You may be redirected to a blank page or a fake error page instead of the antispyware site, where you would normally be able to receive assistance with uninstalling the hacker software. Through their browser hijacking tools, cybercriminals can also unload spyware onto your computer that can allow them extract your name, contact information, identity data and more. Because they have access to your browser history, hackers can access sites you have visited where you entered your personal data, such as online shopping websites where you typed in your credit card number or an online banking website where you input security passwords. They can also use your browser history as a reference for popular websites on which to next install their software. Oftentimes the rogue code creates registry changes to your computer’s operating system so that it is troublesome to change your browser settings back to normal. Usually there isn’t an uninstall option for the hacker software, so it continues to annoy and destroy until you install antispyware that can remove it. One browser hijacker called CoolWebSearch is so notorious that it cannot be uninstalled by typical
antispyware software, so a man named Merijn Bellekom invented a program to help remove this hijacker in particular. To avoid any of these harmful attacks, you should be sure to install antispyware software such as PC Tools Spyware Doctor or PC Tools Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus. PC Tools Spyware Doctor will stop malware from reaching your computer through memory scans, behavior profiling, and status monitoring. PC Tools Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus uses two engines to both guard against threats and prevent information and identity theft.

On May 25th, IFMA members gathered for an especially exciting meeting at Solyndra’s new LEED Gold-designed headquarters in Fremont. Only a year ago, President Obama had visited this innovative solar manufacturing company and had taken a tour of its manufacturing facilities. Members were happy to learn that before and after the presentation, they would be touring Solyndra’s new 300,000 sq. ft. fab whose state-of-the-art robotics has doubled output and capacity already this year. Their fab manufactures panel arrays with a cylindrical module design which are 80-95% recyclable and have captured the interest of major corporations such as Coca-Cola, Anheuser-Busch and Frito-Lay, to name a few. Solyndra’s President and CEO Brian Harrison gave a warm welcome to all and Ben Bierman, Executive Vice President of Operations and Engineering, followed with an overview about the design of their headquarters office. Solyndra is pursuing LEED Gold certification with the U.S. Green Building Council for its headquarters. Its list of sustainable elements include: abundant natural lighting, double-paned windows and automatic sunshades that react to the sun’s movement throughout the day. The headquarters site was selected long before the team decided to submit it to LEED, so there were a number of adjustments to be made to obtain LEED points. Solyndra’s HVAC choices have saved them $100k/ month. Their central lighting control system saves $20K/month. Solyndra’s non-solar energy efficient initiatives are 15% better than Title 24 and 43% better than ASHRAE 2004, saving them approximately $2 million per year. Solar panels cover one hundred percent of the roof of the fab, which powers the entire office area and also contributes power to the factory. Solar power, Bierman explained, is the most cost-effective and environmentally sound way to produce energy. Energy consumption in U.S. is 3.3 terrawatts (TW). To replace only 1 TW produced by fossil fuel with an alternative energy source would take 1000 new nuclear reactors or a gigantic wind farm the size of California, and wave and geothermal are negligible. Photovoltaics on 11 billion square meters of already existing roof tops can nearly do it, producing 800 GW. The advantage of solar is that there is no distributed power generation over long distances, and therefore, little environmental impact and no capital, maintenance, or distribution costs for transmission lines. Recycle, Reuse, Repurpose New Doors Open for Goat Farm
Mike Hulme owns a goat farm in the Evergreen area of San Jose, where he and his wife raise and breed around 70 goats and provide a home for approximately 40 ducks and 60 chickens. This holiday season was a special one for Mike thanks to Ted Lawson and Cristina Arolla of Citrix Systems and Melody Spradlin of Dome Construction. Melody organized Ted and Cristina’s donation of doors for Mike’s sheds and feeders through freecycle.com while Ted explained, “Citrix wants to ensure that Sustainable Building practices are maintained in all of their construction projects. To that end, all demolition building materials have been either recycled or donated to minimize our impact to the waste stream and protect the environment.” Melody, Ted, and Cristina have started off 2011 fresh and green. Have you? If you are interested in recycling material from your projects, or just need to do some spring cleaning, consider these donation agencies: Freecycle.com. Freecycling is when a person passes on— for free —an unwanted item to another person who needs it. The practice frees up landfill space and cuts down the manufacturing of new goods. Freecycling groups are forming worldwide every minute; visit Recycling Group Finder at recyclinggroupfinder.com. Freecycle.com lists links to recycled items that people have chosen to donate, from cleaning appliances to cars. http://www.freecycle.com Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity sells the donations they receive and uses the earnings to buy supplies to build homes. They sell the donations in order to get the loans for the Habitat houses, which require 100% new supplies. http://www.habitat.org Goodwill. Goodwill sells the donations they receive at affordable prices. Each year, Goodwill responsibly recycles over 7,000 tons of electronics and computers, textiles, paper, cardboard, shoes, books, metals and plastics, and replaces 12,000 gallons of diesel fuel with biodiesel by using a 20% biodiesel blend in their fleet of 17 commercial trucks. http://www.sfgoodwill.org/Donations Building Resources. All money raised by Building Resources through sales of donations is used to operate the program, and any money raised above expenses goes to development of new projects. By expanding into new projects, Building Resources is leading the way in designing new uses for underutilized materials, as well as generating not only more environmentally appropriate jobs, but job categories that did not even exist before. http://www.buildingresources.org Whole House Building Supply and Salvage. Whole House Building Supply offers quality building materials that have been donated or salvaged from area homes and businesses. It works with East Palo Alto non-profits, allowing for all donations to be tax-deductible. http://www.driftwoodsalvage.com/ 14
