Intent

With the increase in tourist flux in different parts Pondicherry and Veerampattinam which in facts lacks destination to support tourism demand. Pondicherry tourism development corporation wanted to come with a landmark destination which can be a part of destination and help in this regards. The project provides a lot of scope for site planning and landscaping. A resort gives an equal importance to outdoor spaces as in the interiors. The project provides an outlet to study the local architecture: an exercise in the evolution of an Architectural vocabulary which takes the inspiration from the local architecture, keeping in mind the climatic factors, behavioral pattern and the user attitude. It also provides the opportunity to study local culture and Heritage. A resort demand the formulation of an ambience which can provide people to relax and leisurely spend their time, at the same time satisfying all the functional needs. Thus, this project gives the opportunity to deal with the visual, behavioral, technical & functional aspect to the design. With increase in level of income and dual income in the family people are frequently enjoying vacations and seeking some quality spaces around which Veerampattinam lacks. Also anyone going to tour Pondicherry, either starts or ends his journey here. So, duration spend is more as compared to other places.

CONCEPT

The concept of the design is about reflection of Pondicherry. This reflection can be in built form or in inbuilt form (i.e. in a tangible or in intangible form). Pondicherry has its own identity. Each and Every region having some kind of climatic influence on their culture, living style, festivals, houses. here the houses are the built forms. In Pondicherry one can see the cluster of houses around the main ancestor’s house. Construction techniques and construction materials are also different and unique in Pondicherry region. Literate stones are mainly used for construction. The French part of the town was built along the sea on sand dunes. It is characterised by long wide streets with stately colonial styled buildings. The residential buildings are comparatively simple, solid yet varied. They have flat roofs, an inner courtyard with garden and colonnaded porticos serve a double function of protecting from sun and rain, and serving as a transition space to the rest of the house. The public buildings usually are surrounded by a large fenced-in compound. At times French models were used, which were adapted to suit local conditions. These buildings often have an impressive stair to an elevated ground floor and a colonnaded facade.

why Pondicherry?

Need and scope

With the increase in tourist flux in different parts Pondicherry and veerampattinam which in facts lacks destination to support tourism demand. Today’s urban scene is that the fast changing hectic life, Pollution in urban areas increasing day by day and causing grave and irreparable damage to the earth. The increasing population damaging biodiversity, concrete jungle producing more heat this all directly affecting on human health. In reverse the rural villages, coastal areas are away from such environment. When people need relaxation and relief from the urban environment and hectic life, they need to go at places which are free from pollution, noise. Also the areas which is having a good geographic and climatic conditions, also areas having good cultural and artistic feature and they also need a recreational and sporting activities for enjoyment. The seashore environment peoples choose for the relaxation and enjoyment. Coastal areas have good climatic, geographical conditions, and good culture. So for such purpose there is need of accommodation along with recreational and sporting activities. The beach resort which has a pollution free environment, fresh air to breath in, equable and a pleasant climate fulfills all the above needs. Greater scope has been developed due to the ever increasing urbanization. Hence my topic beach resort with facilities like food, lodging, shopping and other recreational activities will allow tourists to come and enjoy the environment of Pondicherry

tourism scenario in india International tourist in India in 1978 yielded worth 30,000 million and this figure is accelerating at a rate of 15% per annum. India’s share of this sum was only 9%. Data from the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) shows that India received only 9 million international arrivals in 2016, placing it at 40th place in the world; a tenth of those received by top-ranking France. India possesses one of the finest beaches in the world along its Wide coastline.

The need for a resort

Every tourist going to a resort is out for a holiday. It is a duty of a designer to cater to this basic requirement. The difference between a hotel and resort should be understood . “ A RESORT IN NOT A TRANSIT STOP BUT A DESTINATION ” ATMOSPHERE Fundamental necessity for a Resort to be successful . Must have sense of specialness, excitement & mood. The essence of tourism is to be transported into a new world with which is different from our routine but with modern facilities. Nature is the chief contributor and hence a good picturesque site is of utmost importance, no man made environment can match nature. At the most it can supplement & compliments it. People come to the beach for different reasons, Some come for a swim, some for tan, some for the smell, water sports, deep sea diving etc, be it anyone, or all of these, the two pre-requisites of the site are lovely beach & an expanse of blue green ocean.

site analysis

Introduction Pondicherry or Puducherry is a city, an urban agglomeration and a municipality in Puducherry district in the Indian union territory of Puducherry. It is affectionately known as Pondy, and has been officially known by the alternative name Puducherry since 2006. Pondicherry is the regional capital and largest city in the territory. The topography of Pondicherry is the same as that of coastal Tamil Nadu. Pondicherry's average elevation is at sea level, and a number of sea inlets, referred to as "backwaters" can be found. Pondicherry experiences coastal erosion. The city is protected against the sea by a 1.25 mile (2-kilometres) long seawall, first completed by the French in 1735, which reaches a height of 27 feet above sea level.

RESORT

SITE

CLIMATE The climate of Pondicherry is classified as tropical wet and dry similar to that of coastal Tamil Nadu. Summer lasts from April to early June, when maximum temperatures frequently hit the 41 °C (106 °F) mark. The average maximum temperature is 36 °C (97 °F). Minimum temperatures are in the order of 28–32 °C (82–90 °F). This is followed by a period of high humidity and occasional thundershowers from June till September. The northeast monsoon sets in during the middle of October, and Pondicherry gets the bulk of its annual rainfall during the period from October to December. The annual average rainfall is 1,240 mm (49 in).Winters are warm, with highs of 30 °C (86 °F) and lows often dipping to around 18–20 °C (64–68 °F).

Way to reach the site via Cuddalore Road.

TOURIST PLACES Pondicherry is a popular tourist destination in South India. The city has many colonial buildings, churches, temples, and statues which, combined with the systematic town planning and planned French style avenues, still preserve much of the colonial ambiance. The most popular tourist destinations are the four beaches in Pondicherry, which are Promenade Beach (also known locally as the Rocky Beach), Beach, The Auroville Beach and Serenity Beach. Sri Aurobindo Ashram, located on rue de la Marine, is one of the most well known and wealthiest ashrams in India. Auroville (City of Dawn) is an "experimental" township located 8 km north-west of Pondicherry. It is meant to be a universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony, above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities. There are a number of old and large churches in Pondicherry, most of which were built in the 18th and 19th centuries. A number of heritage buildings and monuments are present around the Promenade Beach, such as the Children's Park & Dupleix Statue, Gandhi statue, Nehru Statue, Le Café, French War Memorial, 19th Century Light House, Bharathi Park, Governors Palace, Romain Rolland Library, Legislative Assembly, Pondicherry Museum and the French Institute of Pondicherry at Saint-Louis Street.
