PHOENIX GYMNASTICS AND DANCE ACADEMY 1926 W Monona Dr, Phoenix | 623-582-5293|PhoenixGymnasticsAcademy.com
M
ike and Donna Payne know what it takes to be a gymnastic champion. Accomplished gymnasts themselves, they each began coaching more than 30 years ago. Donna is currently an Elite-level gymnastics judge and has judged NCAA and USAG National Championships. Together they founded Phoenix Gymnastics & Dance Academy in 1983, and have built it into one of Arizona’s most respected clubs. Working with beginners to elite-level competitors, thousands of students have been through the Phoenix Gymnastics program. The athletes they’ve coached have won numerous state, regional and national championships, and many have received college gymnastic scholarships. Every champion has to start somewhere, which is why the Paynes have created a fun and effective training program that begins at preschool age, when gymnastics and dance activities can enhance a young child’s physical and mental development. The preschool program is designed into various levels so that new students can start anytime and advanced students can continue to be challenged. Ballet, tap, hip hop and combination dance classes are also available for preschool age children. In the Spring, dance students have the opportunity to perform on stage in the annual dance recital. Kids can start Phoenix Gymnastics at any age. Classes for school-age girls and boys are separate and include all the Olympic events. The club also has one of the state’s best competitive programs for advanced gymnasts. say you saw it in playbook!

Too Good to Be Free Beginning its second year, The Culture Pass program provides library-card holders free admission to top Valley destinations.
M
ore than 140,000 people have used The Culture Pass since the program launched in April 2009. Set to end in March this year, the collaboration of 14 local arts and cultural organizations recently announced that because of its resounding success, the program is being renewed for another year. “The Culture Pass is a gift from the city’s cultural institutions to the people of metropolitan Phoenix,” said Mark Patel, Marketing Director for the Phoenix Art Museum. “Our hope is to expose all Valley residents to the wonderful treasures right here in their neighborhoods.” Culture Passes are checked out like library books at the 30 local branches of participating public libraries in Glendale, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa and Chandler. Libraries have a limited number of passes for each destination. Passes are available on a first-come, first-served basis and cannot be reserved, renewed or requested through interlibrary loan. before the library opens to snag more popular passes like the Zoo. Card holders check out the passes at the library’s circulation desk and receive a date-due slip that acts as their tickets. This slip is valid through the date printed and is surrendered at the venue. Any unused slips with expired dates do not need to be returned to the library. An individual can check out only two passes per month and just one at a time. Even if the pass has been used, the card holder will be unable to get another until the seven-day check-out period has lapsed. The Culture Pass originally offered free admission for four to participating destinations; however, several organizations have reduced their offering to provide free admission for only two. The program is now set to run through March 2011. Listed at right are the participating destinations divided by those that offer four and two free passes. For pass availability visit a library or try searching for “Culture Pass” in your library’s online catalog. playbookguide.com
