IMAGINATION
With a firm belief that prioritising human needs can create impactful spaces, I love delving more and more into the human psyche - especially through an interior architectural lens. If you don’t find me scarring my fingers on a fretboard or relishing old world cinema, you’ll probably find me running in my neighbourhood with headphones plugged in, or daydreaming Magritte’s ‘The Lovers’. Having grown into being an intuitive soul, I tend to keep an eye out for the smallest detail that can make a big difference. My now 21-year-old brain has always been looking for meanings concealed within simple things, and that has shaped my design philosophy as well. I look forward to honing my skills further and gaining profound experiences.

With its philosophy grounded in fun, laughter, transparency, light and beauty, the organisation aims to foster a collaborative culture and the design embodies that spirit through its open plan, buoyant features and colourful material palette. The space, equipped with automated sanitising dispensers, motion-sensor doors, natural silk and glass screens to ensure social distancing, inhabits half of the employees coming on alternate days. Much like the Guggenheim's ceiling, the entrance has a shorter height and as one moves into the main space the ceiling blows up creating a cathartic effect. The conference room features a wall showcasing a Delhi "Gali", reinforcing the organisation's identity. The long linear central space composed of the serpentine organic table, private pods, informal meeting spaces and the undulating working lounge platform creates a flexible, unicellular, pellucid and collaborative environment which was achieved by limiting the administrative and finance departments towards the East at a mezzanine level offered by the site itself; and the wet services along the West wall. The serpentine organic table inspired by a child’s carefree scribbling inhabits the three main teams - content, creative and marketing and allows members to work individually while simultaneously encourages collaboration. Following the same profile as that of the table, the undulating working lounge platform helps create harmony. Inspired from the sets of Gali Gali Sim Sim, the arched windows on the South wall further accentuate the serpentine contours.

The material finishes are cohesive throughout but subtly evolve through the different spaces. For example, timber is used as a coherent finish, while pastel furnishings inject moments of calm and the use of terrazzo boosts energy. Concrete and brick walls are provided to create visual warmth. The predominant use of a shade of green along with minimal golden brass accents uplifts the space and adds more character to it. The playful and engaging spatial quality of the office reinforces the "Sesame Effect" for anyone who inhabits it.

High up in the Kumaon region of lower Himalayas, with views overlooking the mountains, the minor project called for remodelling and refurbishing of an existing two-storey building meant to hold a retail outlet and cafe (as an extension of Divinity Resorts). The site, with a total area of 40.97 sq meters stands at a height of 96 m from ground level beside an existing temple, overlooking scenic views. With a vision to "THINK LOCAL. EAT LOCAL. LIVE LOCAL", the client, SOS Organics promotes a holistic approach to sustainable living by fostering altruistic relations with indigenous communities and sharing the philosophy that Mother Nature has provided an abundance of resources to nurture her children's health and well-being without disrupting the balance. Their village industry produces natural cosmetics and organic health foods at Chitai, Almora, and seeks to implement socially, economically and environmentally sustainable projects that preserve resources and cultures of the Himalayas, along with developing the region's potentials.

Endorsing humbleness, service and higher values of an ethical and spiritual human being, this tax exempted foundation runs a benevolent entrepreneurship integrating the needs of people and the environment. Building on their belief to harness what nature has to offer, the proposed design is composed of native and raw materials (like adobe, mud, pinewood, stone, terracotta, hemp/jute and rattan) with a central focus on sensorial stimulation, culminating in a commercial space that creates a homelike hosting experience, attracting a broad array of customers.

Having one entry point guiding the circulation in a way that allows the customers to get to the cafe only after going through the retail section first acts as an effective marketting strategy. Keeping the brand’s belief in transparency and opennesss in mind, one of the major undertaken design considerations is visual premeability, allowing people standing in the natural cosmetics display area to view the cafe and tea garden and vice versa. At first glance, the East facing shopfront shows off a collection of hempowered products and gift hampers along with the cashier's desk. A portrait of W.L. Poonja, an important idol figure, who’s philosphy of being “FREE” to give back to the Earth and live harmoniously gave rise to the brand’s philosphy itself, has been strategically placed on the wall behind the cashier’s desk as a ‘conversation starter’ to allow customers to engage more with what the brand stands for rather than just their products. On the opposite wall is a window display unit with products placed categorically (using edge grippers as product range descriptors) on pinewood shelves. An organic and voluptuous adobe platform offering a consultation area along with a bespoke rain water harvesting bamboo sink feature runs along the periphery of the space in a curved form creating a funnelling effect that entices customers to explore the store further. The curve flows into two archways, one opening to the South facing tea garden with overhanging herb planters allowing customers to brew their own cup and gain traditional knowledge of herbs and plants while another leading to the cafe and organic health foods display.

Roof Floor level +22’-8.5”
The service counter and the flexible health foods display unit are strategically placed along the West wall to create a sense of openness in the limited space within and utilise the potential views and sunlight points to their fullest. Merging part of the brand’s merchandise (health foods&home care) with the cafe is another effective marketting strategy creating a unicellular space that allows customers to gaze upon the products while enjoying a snack. A centrally placed exposed rock with embedded salt lamps grounds the circulation around it. Delicate odes to Uttarakhand (where the site is situated), have been incorporated through the space, like the ‘butterfly frames’ wall (reminiscent of the Butterfly Museum, a landmark) and orchids (locally prevalent) placed at the cashiers’ desks. A feature wall in the cafe reiterating the brand’s philosophy of thinking, eating and living local showcases a set of framed portraits of the rural village community that SOS Organics has created; to educate customers further. The cafe extends a plethora of seating arrangements ranging from high bar stools to cushioned platforms and rattan armchairs, with an indoor capacity of 15-18 people. It also offers an East facing reading nook (showcasing the publications as part of the brand’s merchandise and upholding their belief in the importance of reading) with a window seating platform and an outer deck providing sunlight, scenic views and seating for up to 6 people. The deck also leads to an ADA equipped washroom extended towards the back of the building.

The exterior finishes allow the building to blend into its surroundings as seamlessly and sensitively as possible. The complimentary warm earthy tones washing over the interior, provide an optic effect when looking into the landscape which becomes vivid, more defined and crisp. They also inject a sense of calmness and are reminiscent of man's first home, the cave. Adobe is projected onto walls, ceilings and platforms, honouring and expanding its plasticity; expanding people's senses, bringing texture, tone gradation and detail to the delicate gesture of drawing spaces, even inviting one for a pause to feel the smell of wet earth when it rains. Fresh patterns have been introduced in the space through the use of terracotta tiles (for service counters and cashiers’ desks) and intricate upholstery fabrics, to balance the strong adobe shades reflecting on the walls and ceiling. A light grey cement IPS flooring offers a muted base to allow the earthiness of other materials to stand out. Rattan light features and furniture pieces with cane weaves further accentuate the feeling of being close to nature. The use of pinewood (locally found in Uttarakhand) introduces a very calm and subtle shade of brown interspersed with the terracotta tones. Using nostalgia and natural matter, crafted by artisan hands that desire to achieve not perfection but real environments (resonating with the brand’s belief in authenticity), the finishes react in an allegorical manner to the sunlight movement along the day, turning walls, ceilings and the floor not into limits or boundaries, but canvases for the light to express itself gradually in various forms. Responding to the natural, 'primitive', and organic ethos of the brand, the tactile and engaging spatial quality creates a therapeutic space with minimal undertones that, when opened, would bring back some lost age of ancient forms of construction, the slow passing of time and contact with the earth creating a feeling of "home".

SITE ENTRANCE Staff Building
N Sattal, Uttarakhand
Perched on a promontory in the foothills of the Indian Himalayas (1370 m above sea level) with a 180° panoramic view of the Kumaon valley, Divinity Resorts is influenced by Uttarakhand's local culture and tradition to create a haven tamed by humble luxury within nature's lap. The design was guided by the inherent constraints of building in the area, concerns of environmental impact and cultural sensitivity, and careful observation of indigenous materials, climate and landscape. Sustainability is embodied in every aspect of this boutique resort - from the use of adobe clad walls, reclaimed wood, natural air conditioning provided by deck extensions and verandahs and the minimal amount of dirt and trees removed during construction. Additionally, through organic farming and herb gardens that merge with the pre-existing landscape of pine and oak trees, local vegetation has been increased by a considerable amount — thus going beyond simple sustainability to holistic integration.
The site is a 15 min drive from the Bhowali Taxi Stand and is accessed by a narrow road along the retaining wall which seamlessly culminates at the Main Arrival Spot (Building C). Three more pre-existing structures (Buildings A, B and D) are spread across the span of the resort catering to a plethora of amenities offered by it - including spa/wellness; retail/cafe and guest accommodations like couples' suites/rooms; luxury suites and guest rooms. After parking right next to the main gate, guests are driven up to the Arrival Spot in a golf cart, offering them a moment to take in the expanse of the site and its scenic breathlessness. All four buildings are oriented towards the East and face the valley, lending the views and daylight to be utilised to their greatest potential. The varying topography from the North end of the site to the South turns it into a playful landscape that facilitates serendipitous social interactions as well as moments of self-reflection. One such example is the water/fire pit accommodated within a pre-existing trough in the site, allowing guests to gather in a common space, mingle and participate in engaging activities conducted by the resort.

Overarching unicellularity and transparency are achieved through the spatial dialogue and sense of continuity between different elements of the site. Extending the same design principle to the interiors and functioning of the resort continues the conversation between people, space, light and landscape. The resort subtly sensitises visitors towards nature and the local communities through its philosophy and design moves. By simply being in such a location, it extends a moment of humility and pause, allowing guests to feel a sense of belonging to the land. Spaces have been designed to satisfy the subconscious and imbue people with a sense of wellbeing and gentle joyfulness, culminating in a sensory experience that facilitates catharsis.

Building C, the biggest of the four pre-existing structures forms the converging point of the resort. Since the main road culminates at the same level as the building, it conveniently lent itself as the arrival spot as well. The challenge was to have a sense of domestic space without compromising functionality. In pursuit of this, the greeting space has been designed like that of a welcoming home, warming the guests like a grandmother's hand. Demolishing the walls that divided the North and South ends of the building opened up the interior and allowed piercing transparency throughout the entire stretch. With an attached powder room, the Waiting Lounge spills into the East-facing deck extension that houses the Tea Room which offers herbal infusions produced by SOS Organics (Retail in Building A), allowing guests to unwind after a long journey. A wooden jali inspired by local Uttarakhand motifs politely separates the two spaces and creates immersive shadows within the waiting area, enveloping all surfaces. The terracotta flooring interspersed with the dark purple stucco over some walls creates a unique blend of contrasting tones and gradations. While the soft orange radiates warmth and happiness, the deep purple offers a sense of spirituality, calming the mind and nerves. Since the Dining Room is towards the South-East, a deck extension connecting it to the kitchen was built for ease of service circulation. With nature as the ideal backdrop, dry-stacked stone walls with the enticing dark purple stucco and warm lighting bring out an unusual dining experience. The reed roof over the outer deck further brings out the beauty of each surface through the shadows formed by it, nourishing the soul and not just the stomach.

A staircase towards the South of the building leads to the first floor, which houses two luxury suites. The entrances of both suites have been designed in such a way that one would be greeted with breathtaking views of the valley the moment they set foot within. Each suite has a separate lounge with the beds placed on a higher level, providing a subconscious sense of distinction. Aipan art installations adorn feature walls, bringing the local craft in. The calming mix of blue-green tones along with raw textures brought in by white stucco walls forms a serene backdrop for true rejuvenation of the mind and soul. Taking advantage of the site’s hundred-year-old Pine and Oak trees along with the valley and distanced mountains, the design captures scenes to create a sequence of dynamic views from the building. The framing scenery interacts differently with the layout of each individual space and diversifies the relationships between each room’s plan and the window. The design aims to achieve a type of optical precision, which is about creating a dialogue between the details and their background scenery. Moving away from opulence to the notion that luxury is attention and care was one of the core principles. Through its earthy composition, the design offers tactile and indelible experiences. Seemingly simple tools and moments are used to help one disengage from the everyday monotony and embark on a journey of self-discovery.
