Hyderabad as a city has always had a mark on the architectural heritage map, with historic buildings representing architecture from various eras including the nizam period and the Mughal period. In the present day, the city’s architecture has shifted to a more modernistic approach, with high-rise buildings of concrete and glass taking the forefront. In this process, many structures such as the Toli masjid, Nizamia hospital, Bashir Bagh Palace have been neglected. The need to create awareness and revive the city’s layered cultural background drives this project in the aim to provide a space to encompass the past, the present, and the future in terms of form and function. With the main intent being to establish a linkage between the architecture and the culture as well as with nature, it can be seen as a one-stop location, representing an interpretation of Hyderabad’s rich culture.

I NTE NT The intent of the project is to establish a connection between the spatial quality of the old city and the newly developing areas while the transition spaces depict the Hyderabadi character (Bazaars etc) in a contemporary fashion. The design tries to focus not only on the spaces but also the events that take place and the interaction of the public with it.

The central axis culminates with the OAT and the Citizens Forum in the south. There is a clear shift of materiality to concrete and brick to depict the evolving style of architecture, along with the rocky OAT mirroring the rugged rocky terrain present in Hyderabad. Elements such as Tudor and semi-circular arches have been adopted to correlate the building language throughout the structure while bridging it to the present and inspiring a better future. The form and materiality of the Citizens Forum also reflect its function of educating users of the city’s ongoing journey and providing a platform for its present stage.

Bangalore as a city has witnessed a significant change of nature, transforming from the calm garden city to the metropolitan hub it is known as today, with a prominent, growing IT sector. Through it all, the city has managed to retain aspects of the past in terms of its cultural activities of theatre and dance and other elements. This project aims to bring these two contrasting sides of the city together, making it a one stop location, of Bangalore, for Bangalore. Bridging the gap between the two areas, the site hold functions of commercial, experiential and collaborative natures such as linguistic learning Centres, performance theatres and coworking spaces.

CONTEX T UAL AN ALYS IS The 3-acre site is located in a highly dense activity zone of Bangalore, with the Chinnaswamy Stadium and the Cariappa Park on the west and east respectively. There is a slight incline of the terrain with the NE corner connected to Cubbon Road sloping down to the SW adjoining MG Road.
M
The site’s immediate context consists of an abundance of evergreen vegetation that continues around the periphery of the site as well as being centrally located, providing ample shade through the day.

The first option explored a stepped form which aimed to bridge the various blocks through accessible green terraces, forming a hierarchy of functions. The second form introduced voids in the masses for atrium spaces to connect functions vertically. Another strategy adopted was to raise the structure completely to create a more open plan. This was done for the more informal areas of interaction as well as to frame the entrance to the interior spaces.

Y The three main built forms are all raised off the ground for varied forms of public interaction at the entrances of each block as well as between the blocks. The cantilevered upper floors serve as a shade to these areas while also emphasizing the entrances. To connect the building to its immediate surrounding context, the south block is built to a height of G+2, correlating it to the Biblical Society opposite the site which is of a similar scale. Also, a more welcoming front is perceived to passersby on the main road with this block being of a more modest scale.

O B JECT IV E • The core objective of the project is to re-establish the connection between the urban fabric and the lakefront and to understand the social fabric in that area. • Strong connectivity from the ITPL main road to the lakefront increases the user density and promotes the cultural spaces around and accessibility to the lake. • The project tries to help release the lakedges and make it a more visible entity in the neighborhood. • The proposal also aims at the revitalization of the cultural hub which includes Ashwath Katte and temples which have lost their significance over the years. • The idea is to rethink streets as an interactive space between people of different backgrounds by redesigning the pathways and introducing market spaces, etc. The streets themselves becomes a space for local interaction.

IMPROVING VISIBILTY AND PHYSICAL CONNECTIVITY TO THE LAKE • Street connectivity • Expanding the lake edges
Streetscapes are a significant element of the community realm, which not only helps to define mobility but also states a community’s aesthetic quality, uniqueness, economic activity, well-being, social cohesion, and opportunity. The strategy is to develop the road by strengthening the existing road network, creating access to the streets as well as new access points to the lakefront. Lake edge treatment can define how the space interacts with the surroundings. It could be completely cordoned off or completely opened to the neighborhood. The primary objective of the lakefront is to transform this public space with efficient infrastructure.

EX IS TI N G C O N N ECT IO N • The major connectivity to the lakefront is mainly from the intermediate roads and therefore the minor roads and streets connecting the lake are not used much and are not well known by people who live outside the immediate neighbourhood. • The connectivity towards the north is a small pathway that is not defined and the roads towards the south are very fragmented with huge chaos. Because of the perpendicular nature of the roads, there is no direct visual connectivity. • Because of these factors, there is a huge disconnect between the neighborhood and the lake.

A.
Ashwa t h Ka t t e The Ashwath Katte which is a significant part of an urban village has lost its importance over the years. While the Administrators imagine a city that meets global standards of urban form and infrastructure, at the neighborhood level, people continue to pray at the local tree shrines making the spaces around these trees into places of memory and cultural value. Over the last few decades, this Katte has witnessed a major shift in the kind of activities that were carried out around it by the neighborhood people.
B.
Sp a ces a round Ku n d al ah al l i L ake The kundalahalli lake is a well-maintained lake in terms of the ecological aspect of it but the usage is still limited to the residents around and it acts as a backyard to all the surrounding spaces. The strategy involves enhancing recreational potential by improving the public facility and encouraging overall development within the area.

The design involves rethinking the platform of the Ashwath Katte in order to make it interactive. This is done by incorporating the pavement so that it becomes a part of their daily route and an OAT around the tree which helps increase the footfall in the space and give scope for a wide variety of activities. A court is known for its principles of authority, discipline and justice to one and all. Keeping that in mind, this project aims to capture those values, and translate them into a landmark design on a prime property located in Bangalore. Through this project, an understanding of the technicalities involved in the planning of an institutional typology were learnt, with attention focused on the varied programs and users of the court.

SITE AN ALYS I S The site is rectangular, linear with roads on all four sides in Koramangala, Bangalore with the main roads on the northwest and secondary roads on the remaining three sides. The site has a drop of 1.5 meters from the main road and is located in a very busy part of Bangalore with heavy vehicular traffic, with the upcoming flyover on the northwest side of the plot. The site is densely covered by vegetation on its periphery. The trees act as a buffer from the noise due to the extreme traffic at the junction.

INTENT The main objective of the design was to create a monumental building which could become easily associated with judiciary power and at the same time which would remain people friendly. The goal was to design a piece of architecture that would refer to the stability of the law and at the same time which would provide full transparency of all court procedures.
S T RATEGY Facades defined by a vertical rhythm of repeating columns
Maximising the transparency of the court house with the help of open corridors.
Keeping the ground floor open which acts as a space for maximum interaction between the lawyers and the litigants.
To create a clear demarcation between the routes taken by the public and the Judges.

The form was designed with regard to the hierarchy of spaces based on functionality and usability. With the lowest level being reserved for ancillary functions, the middle and upper floors accommodate the administration sector and the main courtrooms respectively. To showcase the grandeur of the court, a variety of volumes has been used with a focus on vertical circulation through the building.

The architectural internship experience aided me to understand various scales of projects ranging from residential to detailed furniture design. Aspects of practical work were taught and implemented on a regular basis. This resulted in proficiency being achieved in accurate working drawings, model making skills and on-site understanding of ongoing projects at various stages of construction.

HOUSE K AREA 1200 sq ft. LOCATION - Kalyan Nagar, Bengaluru STATUS Ongoing
The 30x40ft plot site is located in Kalyan Nagar, Bengaluru. Due to the site’s size limitations, the interior plan is compact and the structure builds up vertically. The tall elevation is broken down by the usage of a double slab. A series of sleek vertical timbre screens serve the dual purpose of shading as well as allowing the flow of air into the interiors. They also maintain the privacy required in the bedroom facing the main road.
