Dear Parishioners, " o you believe this? ‘Yes, Lord’, Martha replied. D ‘I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of the living God’.” Jn 11: 27

In our Gospel of the raising of Lazarus, Jesus confronts Martha and questions her if she believes in Him. Martha replies yes because she knows who Jesus is. Jesus was very much a part of the lives of Martha, Mary and her brother Lazarus. In her journeying with Jesus she has experienced many remarkable things. I dare say that it was more than the works she may have witnessed that gave her the grace to affirm Jesus as Lord. We know from the Scriptures that they were very close to Jesus. As good friends and people whom Jesus loved, they would have known more than just His works, they would have known His heart. It is in knowing His heart that Martha is able to say yes to Jesus. In our own journey of faith we are called to deepen our relationship with Jesus. We are called to know more than just the stories about Him. In order for us to give our hearts and lives away, we must cultivate that deep and abiding relationship with Jesus. It is in that close relationship that Jesus is able to enter the very fabric of our beings. When we welcome Him in His message can be the light that guides our path. St. Paul tells us today that "the Spirit of God has made His home in us." How comfor ting and hopeful that is for us. We know we do not have to walk this journey alone but we are animated by the Holy Spirit. If we have the strength to fall into the arms of Jesus, the Holy Spirit will give us the grace we need to follow Him with our entire being. BUT it takes trust, and as we heard in the first concept of Stewardship, making God the priority in our lives. When God is fir st, all else that is contr ar y to God will take a "back seat." Then the power of the Holy Spirit can be unleashed in our lives and we can experience the second concept of Stewardship....an attitude of gratitude. This is the joy by which we give our lives to God and acknowledge the many blessing He has bestowed on us. So we need to list those blessings, name them, give them life. When we know them we then must use them for the greater glory of God. This brings us to the third concept of Stewardship...accountability to God for the gifts He has given us. Remember, each of us has been entrusted with a plot of land in the Kingdom of God and our accountability is how we sow the seeds of the Kingdom. This is our gift back to God as His stewards. As we walk these days of Lent we are reminded of the Light that has come into the world. That light who brings us eternal life calls us to believe and in that belief to act. So we hear Jesus ask us the question He asked to Martha..."DO YOU BELIEVE?" Pray my sisters and brothers, that the Holy Spirit may give you the strength to say YES. Our Restoration and Renovation Committee continues to work diligently to present the parish the best designs and ideas for our Church. As you know, these past 2 weeks, we presented to the parish 5 proposed designs . I want to thank all who took the time after Mass to come to the vestibule of the church...322 people (from the youth on upward) shared their ideas, suggestions and votes. The Committee and I all commented how wonderful it was to hear the enthusiasm and excitement of our parish to the options presented. Option #3 received a majority amount of votes (38%), Option # 4 (29%) , Option # 5 (19%) , Option #2 (11%) and Option #1 (2%). With that in mind I have asked our Liturgical designer Larry Hoy to give us a sixth option that will try and incorporate a hybrid of the top 3 choices and the suggestion and ideas from our parishioners. This design will appear on our web site (www.saintboniface,org). I encourage you to keep informed and continue to share your thoughts and ideas. A poster of the "hybrid" design will be made for the vestibule of the church. A reminder that our Diocese along with the Archdiocese of New York and the Diocese of Brooklyn will celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation (confessions) on the Monday of Holy Week. Each parish in all three Diocese' will have priests available in the confessionals from 3pm till 9pm. Please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to prepare for the great days of Holy Week. FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT, APRIL 6 The Scrutinies of the third, fourth, and fifth Sundays of Lent are ancient rites that are part of the process that brings those who have asked for Baptism into the church. Though they may seem foreign, they are rooted in human wisdom cultivated over the ages. Examining—“scrutinizing”—how you live day to day, you discover areas of your life where you fall short—as well as areas where you have been kind and loving. The best support you can offer those who are joining the church is to engage in an honest scrutiny of your own life. In this way the entire faith community is built up. MONDAY, APRIL 7 American composer Carlyle Floyd retells the story of the biblical Susannah in his opera set in rural Tennessee. Susannah is accused of bathing naked in a river, a sin in the eyes of “Christian” men who spy on her. Distraught, Susannah asks her brother, Sam, “What’s it all about?” “It’s about the way people is made, I reckon,” he responds. “An’ how they like to believe what’s bad. / How short they are on lovin’ kindness. / It must make the good Lord sad. . . . / At seein’ how men treat one another / An’ say they’re doin’ it all fer His sake.” TUESDAY, APRIL 8 Do you ever find yourself complaining about abundance? Too much food, too many t-shirts, too many gadgets, too many events on the calendar! The grumbling of the ungrateful has a long biblical tradition. In the desert years, the Israelites complained about the “wretched food” they were forced to eat daily. It’s shocking to realize they were complaining about manna, once celebrated as “bread from heaven” and now consumed with contempt! If you’re tempted in the upcoming weeks to grumble about “so many extra liturgies in church,” take a minute to recall what these services are commemorating, and give thanks. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9 Pavlov’s dog taught a humbling lesson: how easily behavior can be manipulated and controlled. Ring the dinner bell, you salivate. Pass the donut shop and you reel at the thought of a Bavarian cream. In the biblical book of Daniel, citizens were obliged to worship a statue each time the king’s band played the Idolatry Theme Song. Most folks got into the

THURSDAY, APRIL 10 And now for the moment of truth . . . The big reveal is an important plot device used to add an unexpected twist to a storyline. Examples include Star War’s Luke Skywalker hearing the words: “I am your father,” spoken by Darth Vader, his sworn enemy. Or Breaking Bad’s chemistryteacher-turned-drug-kingpin Walter White telling his wife, “I am the one who knocks” in response to her concerns about danger at the door. But no reveal in any story ancient or modern is more stunning than when Jesus tells his detractors: “Before Abraham came to be, I AM.” In that one moment the truth of Jesus’ full identity is revealed: He and Yahweh (I AM), the God of Israel, are one. And this big reveal comes with an even bigger payoff: life everlasting. FRIDAY, APRIL 11 Memorial of St. Stanislaus One of the engaging things about saints from centuries ago like Stanislaus (b. 1030) is the legends that spring up about them—perhaps not true in a literal way but often carrying kernels of wisdom of a deeper order. Bishop Stanislaus is said to have brought a man who had been dead three years back to life in order to foil a land-grabbing plot of a nefarious king. Given three days to produce a witness to the church’s claim on the land, he prayed ceaselessly before calling the seller of the land from the grave to testify on his behalf. The take-away? God hears and responds to your fervent prayers. SATURDAY, APRIL 12 Life is more than getting from point A to point B An ancient Greek philosopher said you can’t dip your toe in the same river twice. Once a moment in time passes, it’s gone for good. Human beings, however, have also recognized time as cyclical. Easter reminds you of that view. It teaches you that life isn’t an inexorable forward march toward death.
