Sunday, August 11 Having faith, from a religious point of view, means complete trust in God. It does not mean suspending your intellect, will, or imagination. You don’t check your humanity at the door. You enter into faith fully, with all your faculties intact. As a Catholic you have a great appreciation of exploring faith through study, scripture, teachings, customs, art, the lives of the saints, and so many other areas. Consider the words of Saint Teresa of Avila: “God gave us faculties for our use . . . . Then do not let us try to charm them to sleep, but permit them to do their work until divinely called to something higher.” Keep the faith—and your human abilities!

Monday, August 12 Memorial of St. Jane Frances de Chantal Saint Jane Frances de Chantal, founder of the Visitation Sisters, had a reputation for unremitting service to others and a rich devotional life, yet she embraced an uncomplicated style: “There is no danger if our prayer is without words or reflection because the good success of prayer depends neither on words nor on study. It depends upon the simple raising of our inds to God.” Keep Saint Jane’s practical and forgiving approach to the demands of Christianity in mind as you stumble along the path of Jesus: “Should you fall even fifty times a day, never on any account should that surprise or worry you. Instead, ever so gently set your heart back in the right direction.”

Tuesday, August 13 Memorial of St. Pontian and St. Hippolytus Mining has always been a dangerous business. In the ancient world mines were places where slaves, criminals, and others worked in dismal conditions. A Greek historian, Diodorus, described miners of his day who, “compelled beneath blows of the overseers to endure the severity of their plight . . . lose their lives in this wretched manner.” Opponents in life, two of those “criminals,” Pontian and Hippolytus, reconciled when they found themselves condemned for their Christian faith to the same mines. You, however, don’t have to face death in terrible conditions to make some kind of peace—even within yourself—with situations and people you are in conflict with.

Wednesday, August 14 Memorial of St. Maximilian Kolbe Long before Maximilian Kolbe made the decision to die in the place of a condemned prisoner in a Nazi

concentration camp, and long before he became a hero and an inspiration to millions and a saint in the church, Kolbe provided shelter to refugees fleeing in the face of the Nazi invasion of Poland. For this courageous act of hospitality he was arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned, which would lead to his self-sacrificing death. Heroic acts often go on behind the scenes and only later are recognized as such. Would you act heroically when no one was paying attention? Thursday, August 15 Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Over the centuries events in the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary have been depicted in many different ways in art. One of the best-known of Mary’s Assumption is the “Renaissance Mary,” who is aloft on a carpet of clouds and attended by baby-faced angels as she is lifted into the light of heaven. Such images evoke a sense of peace and joy. As you look to other portraits of Mary’s Assumption, whether classic, contemporary, or a personal fave, how might they help you better understand what it means to have your home in God?

Friday, August 16 Memorial of St. Stephen of Hungary It may be easier to contemplate saints who spent their lives in monasteries than in the halls of state. As a king Saint Stephen was not above the violence and political maneuvering common to his time, yet he somehow also held to holiness. What tipped the balance to sainthood may be summarized in a letter to his son, Emeric, who also was canonized. Stephen advised his heir to show favor to citizen and foreigner alike. Be merciful, strong, humble, moderate, and gentle. Never oppose justice. “All these virtues I have noted above make up the royal crown and without them no one is fit to rule here on earth or attain to the heavenly kingdom.”

Saturday, August 17 Most of us know there are two ways of seeing: through “Kingdom eyes,” or “indistinctly, as in a mirror,” as Saint Paul says in 1 Corinthians 13. “Kingdom vision” is what Jesus urges us toward in every parable, where the last are first, sinners are forgiven, the dead rise, and everything is the opposite of what it seems from a dim and worldly perspective. The best way to cultivate Kingdom eyes is to see as children do. As a 9-year-old once explained: “You can feel the grace of Jesus flowing through your body after receiving Communion.” If you haven’t felt that lately, it’s time to remember what you used to know.
