Golden Wedding Jubilee Celebrations

This Fall, couples that have been married fifty years or more will be honored at liturgies on Sunday, October 6th at the Church of St. Rose of Lima in Massapequa and on Sunday, November 3rd at Christ the King in Commack. Both liturgies will begin at 2:30pm. Couples may register for ONE liturgy. Registration forms may be obtained at the St. Boniface parish center. Registrations must be received by the Office of Worship by September 19th for the October 6th liturgy and by October 17th for the November 3rd liturgy. There will be additional celebrations in the Spring for those who may find that more convenient. Dates for the Spring celebrations will be communicated at a later time. Thursday, August 29 Sunday, August 25 There was a time, not so long ago, when people routinely left their front doors unlocked, at least during the daytime. Now alarm systems and deadbolts seem more the order of the day. But even if our doors must be locked, your heart can remain open. There will always be dangers, and precaution is in order, but you need not let fear rule. The vast majority of people are well-intentioned, so keep on trusting, and when someone knocks at your door, be prepared to answer.

Monday, August 26 The modern way of thinking about church—as a very nice building where people worship—has led to an unfortunate by-product: the mistaken notion that church is a place you can get to by yourself. When Saint Paul writes his letters to “the church,” he is most certainly not addressing his remarks to a building. Nor does he travel by himself. Paul takes the gospel advice of traveling in pairs and always prefers to have a companion to “be church” with him on the road: Barnabas, John Mark, Silvanus, Timothy, or Titus. On this journey and at this table, you never eat alone!

Tuesday, August 27 Memorial of Monica For years Saint Monica wept during her tireless prayers for her husband Patricius and her son Augustine’s conversions to Christianity. Her dedication and devotion to God and her Christian values have earned her the title of patroness of married women, alcoholics, difficult marriages, disappointing children, and victims of unfaithfulness and verbal abuse. Despite her sorrow and grief for the disrespect of Christianity her husband and son held, her wholeheartedness and persistence proved true when husband and son became Christians. Never underestimate the power of prayer.

Wednesday, August 28 Memorial of Augustine, bishop, doctor of the church The practice of adopting patron saints goes back to the early days of Christianity when churches were built over the graves of martyrs who then were adopted as patrons. As one of the most prominent Christians in history, Saint Augustine has been named patron saint by countless churches, cities, and dioceses as well as by theologians, printers, brewers,

Memorial of the Passion of John the Baptist John the Baptist is a unique figure in the Bible. For one thing he forms a bridge between the Testaments: He looks, acts, and talks a lot like an Old Testament prophet but points beyond himself to a new faith, in Jesus. For another he gets something reserved to only Jesus or the Blessed Virgin Mary: The church celebrates his birth and death as a “nativity” and a “passion” respectively. These words underscore John’s close relationship to Christ and his important role in the story of salvation. But while no other saint receives such observances, John nonetheless does what all saints do: direct people to God and reveal God in their own selves while calling others to do the same.

Friday, August 30 The simple oil lamp, for centuries the main source of light in households worldwide, figures prominently in Jewish and Christian scripture and ritual as a spiritual symbol. Lamps light the way of the righteous and are central to the commemoration of Chanukah. In Orthodox Christian churches the sanctuary lamp is an oil lamp by tradition, first lit by the bishop when the church is consecrated and designed to burn constantly thereafter. Keep the lamp of your faith perpetually lit so that it lights your way in the path of holiness.

Saturday, August 31 Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary Saturdays are not only the traditional day to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary but also the day of the week to pray the Joyful Mysteries of the rosary, the preeminent “Marian” prayer. In prayerfully meditating on the events of the Annunciation of Gabriel to Mary, the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth, the Birth of Jesus, the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, and the Finding of Jesus in the Temple, we “weave our intentions, thoughts, imagination, emotions, and desire for union with Christ,” says Alice Camille in her award-winning article for VISION Vocation Network, “Full of grace: Reclaiming the rosary.” The rosary is a prayer that speaks to everyone as the church but also to each person as an individual. IBM Provides a $3,000 Technology Grant to All Saints Regional Catholic School Thanks to the diligent volunteer efforts of Omar Patino, our school, All Saints Regional Catholic School was awarded a $3,000 IBM Community Grant to expand the role of technology in the classrooms. While technology alone cannot solve all the challenges of education today, effective use of computers and the Internet is an essential skill to future career development as well as personal enrichment. This generous grant permits All Saints to improve existing systems and make plans for the next generation of technology. A father of three All Saints graduates, Mr. Patino gave the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first Middle School Career Assembly presentation in which he informed the students of the exciting opportunities in engineering through a lively and humorous presentation dispelling the myths that engineers are shy or dull. His well-received presentation has hopefully sparked the studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; interest to consider professional options in the diverse branches of engineering.
