Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time: August 4 In her poem “One Art,” Elizabeth Bishop ironically lists much of what a person can lose, insisting that those losses are “no disaster”—that is, until she comes to an unnamed “you,” the loss of whom is nothing but disaster. We need poets and sages like the authors of the biblical wisdom books to keep us real so that our Christianity is not a rose-colored illusion. Despite our best efforts we fail; others fail us; we cannot save everything, we cannot hold on. Today be alert to persons who are caught in their personal losses. Empathize and offer them the hope of a Christian— you—who, even if you can’t bring about a reversal, you can give your presence and care. Monday, August 5 Memorial of the Dedication of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major Wealth should come with a warning: “Caution— Handle with care.” The magnificent Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (Saint Mary Major in Rome) was built with funds collected from extensive landholdings the church acquired on the Italian peninsula in the fourth and fifth centuries. Some of the wealth supported the clergy, some went to magnificent structures such as the Basilica, some went to charity—and some led to the corruption that would later plague a wealthy papacy. Pope Francis calls the church of today to actively embrace a simpler lifestyle. While we cherish the magnificent monuments of a more gilded age, let us focus now on the treasures of simplicity. Tuesday, August 6 Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord Seeing isn’t always believing; it can lead to incredulity, too. You rub your eyes or clean your glasses, hoping a second glance will reveal a less challenging reality. At times like these, hearing may clarify the picture. So it was on the mountaintop when Jesus was transfigured and his three friends were dumbfounded. As Saint Peter attempted to harness this event with his pragmatism, a voice from heaven interrupted to identify Jesus as “beloved Son.” A transfigured view of things cannot be domesticated or twisted into business as usual. Pray to see and hear God’s will for the world more clearly. Wednesday, August 7 Memorial of St. Cajetan In the early years of the Protestant Reformation, many in the Catholic Church worked to eliminate the corruption that helped to fuel the Reformers’ cause. One of those people was the priest Saint Cajetan, who
with the bishop—and later pope—Gian Pietro Carafa founded the Theatine order of priests in 1524. The Theatines had no property and lived plainly and devotedly (and were distinguished from other clergy only by their white socks!). By their example they sought to change the lives of those around them. You, too, can influence others for the good by making yourself a model of faith and simplicity. Thursday, August 8 Memorial of St. Dominic In canonizing Saint Dominic in 1234—only 13 years after his death—Pope Gregory IX said he had no more doubt about Dominic’s saintliness than he did about that of the apostles Peter and Paul. Such was the holiness of this preacher, missionary, church reformer, and founder of the Order of Preachers, later known as the Dominicans. His sanctity could be summed up in his final words to the brothers of his community—which could also be guiding principles for your own saintliness: “Have charity among yourselves; hold fast to humility; keep a willing poverty.” Friday, August 9 Memorial of St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross Sometimes it’s hard to believe that God really and truly loves us for who we are. We’ve all got unsavory or painful experiences that we hope go unnoticed by others. Yet your missteps and struggles are within the reach of God’s grace. Carmelite nun and saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross wrote of her own growing awareness of this reality: “I am coming to the living faith and conviction that—from God’s point of view . . . the whole of my life, down to every detail, has been mapped out in God’s divine providence and makes complete and perfect sense in God’s all-seeing eyes.” Give yourself—all of yourself—to God’s divine direction. Saturday, August 10 Feast of St. Lawrence In the heart of summer thoughts turn toward water parks, camping trips, and family outings instead of a feeling of giving more common during the Christmas season. But today’s feast might put you in a generous mood. As a deacon, Saint Lawrence’s life was dedicated to the poor in Rome. When he learned that he would be arrested for his actions, he sought out the widows and orphans—and gave them everything. Legend says he sold sacred liturgical vessels to increase the money he could give. You may never live extravagantly, but your life will always be abundant with God’s grace carrying you each and every day. Reprinted with permission from Prepare the Word (©2013)

St. Vincent de Paul Society In the Gospel, Jesus tells the parable about the rich man who selfishly stored all his grain and goods only to die and not enjoy his abundance anyway. What we struggle all our lives to learn is that life does not consist of possessions nor our perceived security, but of being possessed by God. This week, as you give your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to help the struggling poor, ask for the grace to be truly “possessed by God”.
