Journeying to Sainthood: An Advent Reflection Who is The Venerable Father Anthony Vincent Gallo?

Why is he called Venerable? Where is he in the process of becoming a Saint? What is a Saint? What is the Communion of Saints? Why are there Saints? Who can become a Saint?

Please Join Us and hear the answers to these and other questions

7:00 pm Wednesday, December 18th St. Boniface Martyr Church Venerable

ANTHONY VINCENT GALLO, S.C.J.

Diocesan Priest Oblate of the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart b. January 11, 1899 in Monteforte Irpino (AV) d. May 5, 1934 in Rome

Presenters: Bill Gallo, Nephew of Fr. Gallo Michael Gallo, Grand Nephew of Fr. Gallo Coffee, tea, Italian pastries and cookies will be served.

Bill and Michael Gallo are among the three generations of nephews, nieces, grand nephews, grand nieces, great grand nephews and great grand nieces of Father Gallo who live in Nassau County. Their faith-filled and interesting presentation will provide a close-up and personal account of the modern process by which a person may be declared a saint of the Catholic Church. Father Gallo lived a life of physical and mental suffering dedicated to and joined with Christ’s Paschal Mystery. He truly exercised the theological and moral virtues to the heroic degree as proclaimed in the decree issued by Pope John Paul II on April 19, 1990, whereby Father Gallo was declared “Venerable.” All are welcome to attend the Gallos’ presentation, particularly parents and their school-age children. Dear Parishioners,

"Steady your hearts, because the coming of the Lord is at hand." Jas 5:9 Well here it is, the Third Sunday of Advent, which is traditional called "Gaudete" or Joyful Sunday. We are more then half way done with Advent, and Christmas looms around the corner. Today the Scriptures still tell us to prepare . . . but now we see who we prepare for, Jesus. In the midst of the purple of Advent we are presented with the one John the Baptizer has the people waiting for. So to the purple we add the joyful color of white . . . and hence the pink candle. Of all the Seasons of the Church Year, Advent has always been the most difficult for me to enter, as I am sure it is with many of you. It is a constant struggle not to start celebrating Christmas right after Thanksgiving. I try to wait and then I get nervous that I haven't purchased all the gifts I need for people. So with heart pounding, I run to the mall! Sometimes I wonder why the Church even has this almost forgotten season. But then I see a sign like the ones the Knights of Columbus puts out "Keep Christ in Christmas." Then I remember . . . oh yeah, its not about the mall or the gifts (as important and as nice as they are), it’s about Jesus and my relationship with Him. So I feel my heart steady itself and I start again from scratch spending a little more time before the Tabernacle and the Blessed Sacrament; a little extra reading and meditating on the Scriptures; maybe an extra visit to my confessor to go to Reconciliation. Maybe you too hear the words of Scripture today, "prepare the way for the Lord" . . . maybe that means for you, some quiet time in prayer, listening to the voice of God; going to Mass during the week; taking advantage of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession), whatever it may be. The most important thing is not to let the time pass without trying to "Keep Christ in Christmas." The more emphasis we put on Jesus the more joyful Christmas can be. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed. Many thanks to Ana Arellano, Margaret Evans, Irene Harris, Mary Lou Martin and Barbara Ponzo for decorating the altar for Thanksgiving and Advent. You will notice the beautiful new manager in front of our church. The figures were donated by a family in our parish who would like to remain anonymous. I am very grateful for their most generous gift. The stable itself was built by volunteers. I am so thankful to Dan Kelly, Steve Kerr, Larry Krieb and Neil Miritello for their hours of designing and building the creche. They did a fabulous job. It even folds up to a much smaller size for storage! If you have not received the schedule for Masses and confessions for Christmas, please contact the parish center and check the bulletin for that information. In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Bob

Take Five for Faith Sunday, December 15, 2013 It is a certain belief that Christ will, in the words of the Nicene Creed, “come again in glory to judge the living and the dead.” But when? That was the question for many early Christians who had a keen sense that Jesus, recently departed, would not be away for long. For us today, years have turned to millennia and we’re still waiting. Wondering, though, if Jesus’ return is ever going to arrive makes the event too dependent on time. The real challenge is to cultivate a lively sense of expectation for God in the present. Advent is the perfect opportunity to do that. Do you want God in your life now, or do you want to wait? Monday, December 16 Stanford University business professor Jeffrey Pfeffer advises: “Your most important task as a leader is to teach people how to think and ask the right questions so that the world doesn’t go to hell if you take a day off.” That’s seems similar to Jesus’ management philosophy, although his disciples over the past 21 centuries haven’t been quite prepared for him to take a day off! But certainly each of us can learn from watching the master’s example to respond to silly questions with profound ones, such as: Why are you so afraid? How many loaves do you have? Which of these was a neighbor? Will you really lay down your life for me? Tuesday, December 17 “Would you give a young person a book whose heroes cheat, lie, steal, murder—and get away with it? Chances are, you have. The book, of course, is Genesis. And you are right to encourage your child to read it—with some guidance.” So begins The Genesis of Justice by noted criminal law expert and Harvard Law School professor Alan M. Dershowitz. He goes on to argue that the crimes described in the first book of the Bible, such as Cain slaying Abel, formed the basis for the Ten Commandments and from there our entire system of common law. Leave it to God to bring good out of evil. Crack open the Good Book and judge for yourself. Wednesday, December 18 OK, all you former high-school Latin students: What does the prefix ex- mean? “Former,” as in “Ex-President So-andSo.” Also “out of” or “from,” as in the major biblical events the Israelites experienced in the Exodus (the “road out”) from Egypt and the Exile (“place of banishment”) to Babylon. Every life has its share of “ex’s”—things end, people move out of and on from situations; some of these are forced, some voluntary. Some involve loss, some gain. What have been some of your exoduses and exiles? Just as God did not forget the Israelites through their journeys, God will accompany you on the ins and outs of your life. Thursday, December 19 When Zechariah, Elizabeth’s husband, is told by an angel that his wife will bear him a son, he responds with a perfectly reasonable “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.” What older person would not be stunned? Remember Sarah laughing behind the tent flap, her apron muffling her giggles when she overhears the angels telling Abraham she would conceive at 99? Perhaps today the grace and mercy of God will stun you. Feel free to ask questions, to laugh, to believe. Friday, December 20 People who change the direction of their lives frequently feel they are responding to something larger than themselves. A person struggling with addiction acknowledges a higher power. A professional takes a pay cut to work with developmentally disabled people. A young adult feels the call to religious life. These changes start with one word: yes. In the 2014 VISION Vocation Guide, Brother James Hayes, F.I.C.P. of the De La Mennais Brothers says: “I had a gut feeling that God knew best and that responding to God with a ‘yes’ would lead me on the path to the greatest possible happiness and fulfillment.” Unleash the power of yes in your own life. Saturday, December 21 Memorial of St. Peter Canisius, priest, doctor of the church In the midst of heated battle, it is the rare leader who can keep his or her cool. Saint Peter Canisius was one of that exceptional breed. Amid the struggles of the Reformation, he avoided attacking early Protestants, instead arguing that an honest explanation of the faith would be much more effective than a polemical attack. He rejected personal assaults against the likes of John Calvin, saying, “With words like these, we don’t cure patients, we make them incurable.” Keep your zeal in check, whether the subject is religion, politics, or any other divisive topic. Teach by quiet example, not loud words. ©2013 by TrueQuest Communications. Reprinted with permission from TakeFiveForFaith.com
