Dear Parishioners, "Forgive one another as the Lord Has forgiven you. Col 3: 14 As we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family, the words of St. Paul are always a good reminder of what is the basis of a good family and of any good relationship. We definitely at times can hurt the people we love. What better lesson can we teach each other then to have the strength to apologize for those times we hurt one another. Those simple words can surely do much to straighten out a relationship that is bent by harsh words or actions. The act of forgiveness is an action of God, and as baptized persons we are called to share the life of God. So call someone you may have hurt or even someone who has hurt you; seek forgiveness for any actions that may have been hurtful to another and seek forgiveness from those who may be alienated from you. What a gift of peace that can bring! We as Catholics are in the Octave of Christmas. This means that for eight days the Church celebrates "Christmas Day." Because Christmas (and Easter by the way) are such special days in the life of salvation, one day is not enough to commemorate and celebrate Jesus' saving act. After the eighth day of Christmas the Church begins the Christmas Season which goes on until The Solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord on January 12th, which begins Ordinary Time. So it is still very appropriate to wish someone a "Merry Christmas." On Saturday, December 14th, we had our blessing of the new crèche and caroling with the horse and wagon. The snow did not dampen the atmosphere but actually added to the festivities. It was a wonderful evening and our children had a great time. I would like to thank the chairs of the event, Peg and Jim McCreery and those of the committee who worked so hard, Donna Calamis, Maryellen and Steve Kerr, Eileen Krieb, Pat Warner, Elena Villafane and Dan Kelly. I want to also thank all the wonderful people who baked desserts and those that helped with the set up and clean up.. It was a great night and has become a traditional Christmas event here at St Boniface Martyr. I would like to thank the parish for its fiscal generosity throughout the year and especially at Christmas. I would also like to thank those who dropped off gifts for me at the Rectory and Parish Center. I truly appreciate your kindness and generosity. May the peace of the New-born Savior continue to shine on you . . . MERRY CHRISTMAS! In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Bob

Take Five for Faith Invest just five minutes a day, and your faith will deepen and grow a day at a time. SUNDAY, DECEMBER 29: Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph Dirty diapers, homework, lost socks, heated discussions about where all the money is going: What’s so holy about the average family? If you find this question hard to answer, maybe it’s time to list the blessings of a life lived in a communion of space, meals, resources, and goals. Spend some time at dinner tonight asking the question: What’s the best thing about being part of this family? And on this Fifth Day of Christmas, give thanks where gratitude is due: to spouses who are faithful, to parents who care, to children who strive, and to God, the giver of life and love. MONDAY, DECEMBER 30 Some of us suffer from post-holiday letdown. That could be a symptom of what doctors call “holiday heart”: Too much eating, drinking, and making merry does have physical and emotional consequences that could make you wind up the year in the ER. But there’s also a spiritual letdown that comes from putting too much hope in the pretty packaging of the Christmas season and missing out on the message of God-with-us. It’s not too late to bring your gift to the manger. On this Sixth Day of Christmas, offer your reasons for hope to someone who suffers from discouragement or doubt. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 31 Everyone has favorite verses in scripture. Certainly the opening lines from the Gospel of John are among the most masterful in the Bible. The author deliberately echoes the start of the creation narrative from Genesis—“in the beginning”—and tells of the uncreated One who has been with God all along. Creation gets a fresh start with the arrival of this Word pitched into the world to inhabit this fragile mortal space with us. On this Seventh Day of Christmas, give yourself the gift of a great story and make a New Year’s pledge to read the Bible in a new translation. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 1, 2014: Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God The baby in the manger became the Lord of the Universe: Who knows what wonderful potential futures await us in the birth of every child! However humble the circumstances, each new life bears the likeness of God and the promise of hope for the world. Mary kept this secret in her heart, pondering it especially in the hard times that lay ahead for her child. On this Eighth and final Day of Christmas, make a gift of your blessing to a child close to you or to the world’s children in prayer or material support. THURSDAY, JANUARY 2: Memorial of St. Basil the Great and St. Gregory Nazianzen One way to remember Basil and Gregory is to note that they were friends who both became bishops in the fourthcentury church, very popular preachers and defenders against the Arian heresy. A more unusual way to recall them is to acknowledge that their friendship cooled in the course of their lives, apparently over differing views on how to continue the battle against Arianism. So this can be a day to remember friends or family members who have drifted out of your life by “attrition” or even because of serious conflict. Is reconciliation possible? Dare I take the first step? If not I must still love—if from afar—and at least pray for the good of even estranged friends. FRIDAY, JANUARY 3 When Christian spirituality speaks of being a “child of God,” it’s not knocking down healthy maturity or encouraging adults to regress to an immature state. Rather, it is highlighting qualities of childhood that adults do well to recognize: that you are created by God, that you are dependent on God for every moment of life, and that, therefore, you are loved. As Saint Thérèse of Lisieux prayed, “Thy Love has gone before me from my childhood, it has grown with my growth.” Try to grow as a child of God more each day. SATURDAY, JANUARY 4: Memorial of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, religious And you thought you were busy? Consider Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first native-born citizen of the United States to be canonized. Mother Seton founded the first American religious community for women, the Sisters of Charity. She opened the first American parish school, nursed sick and dying family, friends, and neighbors, and established the first American Catholic orphanage—all while raising five children as a widow! Next time your own responsibilities get you down, remember that you don’t have to start out a saint to do some good in the world. Just do the best you can with what is in front of you. God will take care of the rest.
