Dear Parishioners, "I will make you a light to the nations." Is 49:6 The image of light and darkness are familiar metaphors that are found in scriptures. On January 5, we celebrated the Feast of the Epiphany. It was the light of the star that led the Magi to the Newborn King, Jesus. Isaiah is reminding the Hebrew people that in the midst of all that happens, they are called to reflect the glory and beauty of God's presence. It is through the covenant that God has made them His own people. That relationship is the promise that God will journey with them throughout their history. Conversely, this relationship calls for a response from the people. As we hear in Isaiah, that means to be a light to the nations. God asks for this so that others may come to see Him as the Lord of creation. We, as inheritors of this covenant fulfilled in Jesus, are also called to be a Light to all. That light comes from the way we live our lives. The "yes" to the call is to live as loving people. Love is not just a nice fluffy feeling, but more of a life stance... a total response to God's command. So like the Magi, we may need to pack up our lives, leave behind the extra baggage, and journey to find Jesus. The Wise Men saw that light and were willing to follow it. We are called not only to recognize the light, but more importantly be willing to learn from the light of Jesus. To follow Jesus we all need guidance by seeking the counsel of the "wise men" in our midst - those people who can help us identify the call of Jesus in our own lives. Take a moment and think about those people who helped you recognize "the Holy Spirit who came down like a dove." The more we seek out the power of Jesus, the more the darkness of sin will flee from the light of Christ. As the Baptized, we are called to be the light. We engage in ministry to be that light to others, BUT we must remember that like St. John the Baptist, we are called to defer our hearts to Jesus. The work we do, even if it goes unnoticed and unacknowledged, must give glory to Jesus whom we have accepted in our lives. When we respond to the call of service and do so with joy, we become a light to others and can be a moment of evangelization to those we come in contact with throughout the day. We have the power to lead others to Jesus...and the power to push them away from Him. St. John knew the ministry of his life was to reveal and acknowledge Jesus before the world...no different from our responsibility today. How well do we present Jesus' light to others? This is a question each of us much ask each day. May the Holy Spirit guide us to the light of Jesus. I would like to mention that each week different Confirmation Candidates are present at Mass assisting the ministers. You may notice them giving out bulletins or helping with the collection. This is part of their preparation for Confirmation. How nice would it be if when you see them you thank them and tell them you are praying for them on their journey to full initiation at Confirmation. In Jesus, Fr. Bob

St. Vincent de Paul Society In the Gospel today, John testifies that Jesus is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit. The revelation of Jesus' identity—how he is made known in the world—is mediated by the way we live our lives everyday. As you place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box, know that you are a sign of God’s love to those who are suffering and you give them reason to believe and to trust. Thank you for all your support! Furniture and financial donations are always welcome. You are too! Come join the St. Vincent de Paul Society and be a communal part of your parish. Call 822-3132.

Take Five for Faith Sunday, January 19: Second Sunday in Ordinary Time If John the Baptist and Jesus had lived in the age of MMA (mixed martial arts), would they have been drawn into the ring to duke it out? Not likely, even though like fight stars they both had a message, a following, and a commanding presence. Rather they honored, cherished, and respected one another and in doing so provided a model for their own disciples and all who would follow. During this Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, encourage the leaders of your congregation and your denomination to drop the gloves and reach out in cordial embrace. Monday, January 20 Racism is a ghost the United States has been trying to exorcise since the Civil War. The country belatedly built up an impressive array of laws designed to ensure that all people are treated as equals, yet families of color still must have “the talk” with their children about how to behave when—not if—they’re confronted in situations of racial stereotypes and profiling. The words of Martin Luther King, Jr. still hang in the air: “History has thrust upon our generation an indescribably important destiny . . . this crucial situation will determine our moral health as individuals, our cultural health as a region, our political health as a nation. . . . ” What can you do to secure a safe future for every child? Tuesday, January 21: Memorial of St. Agnes, virgin, martyr The legends of Saint Agnes describe the superhuman qualities that God gave her as she faced horrific tortures by her persecutors in the fourth century. These stories are so fantastic as to be virtually impossible to believe literally, but their merit lies elsewhere. They testify to a God who stays with you in your struggles and pain and does not abandon you. They speak of a God who gives you strength when you need it most. The next time you encounter hardship, look around and you’ll see God already there with you in the midst of it. Wednesday, January 22 In the famous bible story, King Saul tries to dissuade the young David from confronting the giant Goliath. “You cannot go up against this Philistine . . . for you are only a youth, while he has been a warrior from his youth.” Catholics pray today for the legal protection of unborn children and for those who are also “only youths,” treated as objects in human trafficking and abused in their own families and communities. As a church we call for the defense of life, like a seamless garment, from beginning to end. The boldness of David encourages us to face giants knowing that God strengthens our arms. Thursday, January 23: Memorial of St. Vincent, deacon, martyr Sometimes when it comes to the heroes and saints of the earliest centuries of Christianity, all we have are snippets of tradition, stories, perhaps a legend or two. In Saint Vincent’s (d. 304) case, we are told that after he was martyred during the persecution of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, ravens protected his body from being devoured by vultures until his followers could give him a proper burial. Even a shrine erected over his grave at Cape St. Vincent in southern Portugal, we are told, was protected by flocks of ravens. What’s the takeaway to the story? Perhaps simply that the good you do is not buried with you; it lives on in the world. Friday, January 24: Memorial of St. Francis de Sales, bishop, doctor of the church Faith can turn expectations upside down, and the wisdom of saints can also ask you to think “in reverse.” As you ease into the new year, Saint Francis de Sales offers you an incentive for sticking with your resolutions now: “O what remorse we shall feel at the end of our lives, when we look back upon the great number of instructions and examples afforded by God and the saints for our perfection, and so carelessly received by us! If this end were to come to you today, how would you be pleased with the life you have led this year?” Today’s readings: 1 Samuel 24:3-21; Mark 3:13-19 Saturday, January 25 Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul, apostle In his conversion experience Paul “saw” the Lord; he had a very real encounter with the risen Jesus. That experience transformed him into a servant of Christ and a witness to the gospel. What’s also interesting is that it was all so very unlikely: In the midst of persecuting the church, Paul became one of its greatest champions and even ended up suffering for the faith himself. In the spirit of Paul’s conversion, be prepared to let God get your attention and turn you around in unexpected ways. ©2013 by TrueQuest Communications. All rights reserved.
