Dear Parishioners, "Lord teach us to pray." LK 11:1 In the Gospel today the Disciples reveal a desire to know how to approach God. They want to know how to speak to God. They understand that prayer presents that venue to hear the voice of God. Jesus in His own prayer life, has reached that union with the Father and He teaches them. Jesus gives them in that great prayer which Christians have prayed throughout the centuries. The Lord's Prayer is one of the first things Christian parents teach their children. It is words past down from generation to generation and define us as believers in Jesus. I dare say that each of us want to know how to pray. We desire that openness to God so that we may hear His voice in our lives. There is something inside of us that longs for the presence of God. Yet for many of us it can seem to allude us. We attempt to pray and might get frustrated if it doesn't develop as we hoped or desired. To be fruitful at prayer we have to with a willingness to enter the discipline that prayer requires. That discipline is a willingness to work at it. The work of prayer is to stay faithful even if it seems "nothing" is happening. God desires to be part of the deepest and most intimate part of our lives and yet we can have such difficulty attaining that. So we look to the Scriptures to see what God Has to say to us. In the Lords Prayer Jesus gives us a very concise and succinct way to approach the Father. If we go through each line we realize that this prayer contains all we need. What might be a helpful aid to prayer is then to take each line and ponder the meaning presented for our own lives. In those moments of silence to ask Jesus what it means for the direction of our lives. Meditating and praying these words can take a life time to develop and understand. BUT that is the work of developing a true prayer life. We see in the Gospel that Jesus calls us to ask God for all we need. God the Father is presented as One who truly cares for us. What is also important to notice is that we are told to be persistent in prayer. So that even if we feel our prayers are not answered we are asked to continue to flood heaven with our needs. Persistence and faithfulness are the key to a true prayer life. Never lose hope we are loved by Jesus and He will never abandon us! So take these words each day and don't just say them but pray them. Take the Lord's Prayer line by line so that we are not only opening ourselves to God as we present our needs to Him but maybe more importantly we are open to God so that we may hear what He wants from us. The work of prayer can be challenging at times but the fruits of it cannot be measured. May your summer be a time of rest and relaxation that you may enjoy the gifts that God gives you. As I have said, do not forget the obligation to attend Mass, yes even on vacation. What a great teaching moment it can be especially if you have children, to spend the time looking for and putting in your schedule that Sunday time for the Lord. Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time: July 28 Think of the rotten, mean-spirited, selfish things you’ve done in your life. Now imagine someone presenting you with a list of these despicable acts and informing you that you must atone for them over and over—that these past transgressions will forever define who you are. Your heart is heavy. You feel unloved and unlovable, certain that others sit in judgment of you with scorn and ridicule. Then just as you reach the point of despair, someone grabs the paper with the complaints against you, removes it from your sight, and nails it to a cross—the cross. It is finished. Your atonement is complete. Your sins are forgiven. Your new life begins. Phew! That was a close call. Be mindful of God’s mercy today. Monday, July 29 Memorial of Martha Even the savior of the world needed a place where he could put his feet up and let his hair down. The home of Martha, her sister Mary, and their brother Lazarus was just such a place for Jesus. They were his good friends, people with whom he likely shared laughs and good times and perhaps on occasion a good cup of wine. When Lazarus died, Jesus without hesitation put his own life at risk by raising him. Friendship is fundamental to the spiritual life and to our well being, yet too often we let friendships wither from neglect. Who counts you among their closest friends? If the list is short, it’s time to reassess your priorities. Tuesday, July 30 Memorial of Peter Chrysologus When you hear chryso in the names of Saints Peter Chrysologus or John Chrysostom, you know you’re dealing with “gold”: one with a “golden mouth” in the case of Chrysostom and one of “golden words” in the case of Chrysologus. Then as now, people considered gold to be one of the most valuable of metals, and these men’s powers of communication earned them comparisons to that precious material. While you don’t have to attain the heights of eloquence Peter Chrysologus did, you can still aim to express your faith with as much knowledge and grace as possible, whether in words or actions. Wednesday, July 31 Memorial of Ignatius of Loyola Before he came on the world stage as Pope Francis, Jorge Mario Bergoglio had already put in 53 years of service to the church as a Jesuit, having made his first vows in 1960. The Society of Jesus founded by Saint Ignatius of Loyola has served the church for nearly

500 years, with Jesuits currently working in 112 nations on six continents in a variety of apostolic ministries. The election of Bergoglio to the papacy allows for greater visibility for his order and all religious orders. Give thanks for all the women and men in consecrated religious life who have dedicated their lives to the people of God. Thursday, August 1 Memorial of Alphonsus Liguori The space between God and us can seem vast at times. In the Book of Leviticus Moses is instructed to set up a special place for a Divine Encounter: this “tent of meeting” is described for six intricate chapters! But you don’t need to recreate that welldefined space to meet the God we’ve come to know in Jesus. Alphonsus Liguori recommended a greater informality: “Acquire the habit of speaking to God as if you were alone with him...as to the dearest and most loving of friends. Speak to him often of your business, your plans, your troubles, your fears—of everything that concerns you.” Talk: God is listening! Friday, August 2 Memorial of Eusebius of Vercelli “Eusebius” graces the names of no fewer than five bishops from the early centuries of the church, and the places where they served sound like the itinerary of an ancient Mediterranean vacation: Caesarea, Emesa, Nicomedia, Dorylaeum, and Vercelli. Eusebius of Vercelli died in 371 and was involved in the struggle against the Arian heresy, a time when what people believed about Christ was very much up in the air. Some thought Jesus couldn’t be “all God” and “all human” at the same time—that his divinity and humanity had to cancel one another out to some degree. Be thankful for the church leaders of that time who courageously thought he could be both. Saturday, August 3 In history and in our world today we see how the use of power can have dramatic effects. We look to leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Dorothy Day, and Kenyan environmentalist and political activist Wangari Maathai, who chose to work for justice and peace. Conversely we can see examples of leadership choices that led to devastation, such as the Rwandan genocide. We may never find ourselves on the international stage, but in our daily lives most of us have the power to make decisions that affect others in some way. It may be the power of a parent to make choices for a child or of an employer that affect workers. What decisions will you make today? How will they be life-giving to others?
