Dear Parishioners, "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him." John 6:57 Last week we celebrated the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, which is not meant to simply be explained, but rather encountered as mystery. A mystery that is meant to be pondered to draw us into the mystery of God. Today we celebrate another Solemnity that is meant more to be pondered that explained. This Solemnity of Corpus Christi, or the Body and Blood of Christ, doesn't need theological explanations; they will never be enough. What we need is faith and trust. Trust that the Word of Jesus is true. Many Christians believe that Jesus was speaking metaphorically and not literally about His Body and Blood but rather to feed on the "Word" that Jesus came to preach. While the Word is certainly important and that understanding would be easier to accept it is certainly NOT what Jesus was saying. If it were, He would have clarified His teaching when many who could not accept it turned away. What Jesus says is to reiterate more strongly His words and this teaching. After many leave Him, He turns to the Apostles and says "Will you leave me too?" This would have been the opportune time to explain a different teaching to His Disciples so they would understand more clearly. Yet there is nothing. So we conclude from this teaching and others in the Scriptures that Jesus wants to give us His very Self as food for our journey. This teaching has be believed from the earliest times in the life of the Church. We share this continual believe in the Real and True presence of Jesus in the Eucharist with our Orthodox sisters and brothers. As the Churches founded by Jesus we have kept faithful to this beautiful yet difficult teaching. Like the Trinity, we again encounter mystery. Theologians have attempted to help us grasp this mystery through the teaching of Transubstantiation. This states that the accidents (external presence) remains the same but its substance changes into the Body and Blood of Jesus. So bread still looks and tastes like bread but is reality the Body of Christ. The same would be true for the accidents of the wine and its change into the Blood of our Lord. Again, this is helpful but falls short of the beauty of what Jesus intends. What we need is faith to see past the accidents and to believe what Jesus intends. Faith acknowledges this great and wondrous Sacrament so that He may become part of us as food for our journey and that hopefully we become what we eat and drink...namely more like Jesus Himself. So what do we believe? After the priest calls down the Holy Spirit on the gifts of bread and wine they truly BECOME the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Himself. Not a symbol, not a mirror of something else, BUT Jesus Himself. Have you ever pondered while walking up to communion that you will cradle in your hands or on your tongue the true Body and Blood of our Savior? This awesome and humbling gift is Jesus' abiding presence to us. We come to Mass to receive Jesus as Savior and Lord. We gather to worship this wondrous presence among us. May we stand in awe at this mystery, BUT more importantly, may it cause us to seek Jesus and become more like Him whom we consume. In Jesus, Fr. Bob

Sunday, June 2, 2013 Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Approaching the minister of the Holy Eucharist in the communion procession, you can hear the same words repeated again and again: “The body of Christ” and the response, “Amen.” The declaration “body of Christ” refers not only to the consecrated bread handed to the communicant; it also refers to that woman or man whose hands reach out to receive it. In the New Testament those words apply to Jesus’ human body born of Mary, to the Eucharist, and to the Christian assembly, the believers. Spiritual writer Ronald Rolheiser points out that “God still has skin in this world, in the Eucharist and in the community of believers. The incarnation is still going on”—to which we may attest: Amen!

Monday, June 3 The opinions of others can affect whether you choose right or wrong. People like to be praised for doing good and usually fear condemnation for doing what is bad. What, though, about the opposite? It’s much harder to do a good thing when you won’t get recognition for it or to do the right thing in the face of mockery. As Jesus said in the gospels, “Your Father who sees in secret will repay you” (Matthew 6:6); what you do quietly or even invisibly does not escape God’s notice. A similar reward awaits anyone who has the courage to do what is right even when it brings them contempt. God, not others, is the judge.

Tuesday, June 4 Antigovernment sentiment, much in the news of late, is nothing new. Jews in the time of Jesus resented the taxes the Roman Empire imposed on them. But Jesus had bigger things on his mind than the question of what was owed to worldly empires—namely the question of what was required in the reign of God. The take-away for those of us living in modern democracies? Pay your rightful taxes and make your peace with government but let your heart and your vocation belong to God.

Wednesday, June 5 Great difficulties in life can take us in many directions— sometimes away from God and sometimes closer.

Faced with pain or struggle, we may wonder where our loving God is. As time passes and our situation does not improve, we may worry that our suffering is a punishment for something we did or failed to do, whether intentionally or simply by accident. We may even think about taking a step back from God. But God is always near. “I am the vine. You are the branches” (John 15:5), Jesus tells us. There is nothing we can do without Jesus. Instead of trying to pull away, draw strength from the love that is as near as a vine to a branch. Thursday, June 6 You might think of conversion as a one-time event, but it can also be an ongoing, even lifelong process. Instead of only taking place all at once, conversion also happens in many moments along the way. Reading scripture you encounter these mini-conversions from time to time. When a scribe asks Jesus, “Which is the first of all the commandments?” Christ replies that there is no greater commandment than to love God with your whole self and to love your neighbor as yourself. Understand that, and “you are not far from the Kingdom of God.”

Friday, June 7 Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus The celebration of the Sacred Heart of Jesus falls on the Friday after the Solemnity of his Most Holy Body and Blood. The second event helps us to understand the first. God’s love is real and accessible to human beings. Love connects hearts. Through the Heart of Jesus God loves us, and through God in our hearts we can love our sisters and brothers and therefore love God.

Saturday, June 8 Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary Mary’s heart has captivated us for 20 centuries. How can one heart be so spacious? Perhaps if we made a resolution, as she did early on, to commit our love singularly to God’s will, we might find there’s room enough to love everyone we meet. Instead too often we clutter up our hearts with lesser loves, like material things and personal ambitions. We also narrow our hearts to admit only the like-minded, people we can easily enjoy and of whom we naturally approve. Our hearts are far from immaculate: spotted and twisted at times with prejudice, laziness, and plain old greed. Resolve today to de-clutter your love. ©2013 by TrueQuest Communications, L.L.C.
