no bunch of chumps ready to believe any spiritual huckster who told a good tale. Healthy skepticism has helped the church avoid many a pitfall and dead end over the centuries, or at least to find its way out when it got trapped in one. That is why, on the whole, the Catholic tradition is to be admired for its depth, wisdom, balance, and reasonableness. In the spirit of Thomas, don’t just take it on faith; check it out for yourself!

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time God is always calling us. Sometimes it feels like choirs of angels trumpeting in our ears and other times like a gentle knowing nudge. Pope Francis reminds us that sometimes hearing God’s call may feel uncomfortable or even a bother, but still we must persist and work toward removing barriers and opening a path to God: “The Holy Spirit urges us to undertake a more evangelical way of life . . . . It is the Spirit who makes us free with the same freedom Jesus himself lived; the freedom that makes us children of God! Do not resist the Holy Spirit!” (April 15, 2013). What is one barrier that might be keeping you from undertaking God’s mission in your life?

Happy Fourth of July! An important day in America to celebrate liberty from political oppression but also a reminder of the Christian freedom you enjoy. You can look at this freedom in two ways: freedom from— being or feeling forced to do something—and freedom to—see, judge, and act on what is holy and good. Christians believe Jesus has set them free and have the wonderful liberty to choose him. What has God freed you from? What has God freed you to do?

MONDAY, JULY 1 Memorial of St. Junípero Serra, priest

FRIDAY, JULY 5 Memorial of St. Elizabeth of Portugal

Junípero Serra was 55 when he founded the first California mission at San Diego in 1769. He went on to establish 21 more missions along the coast of California before he died in 1784. His dedication to his vocation as a priest and Franciscan missionary gave rise to the titles of Apostle of California and Patron of Vocations. What do you plan to do in your golden years? Serra set out in a new direction to introduce the church. Perhaps you can introduce the church to a new generation. Consider yourself an apostle of the 21st century.

TUESDAY, JULY 2 Storms and stresses are part of everyday life, from emergency repairs to family problems. We can get swept up in a tidal wave of distress in a matter of moments much like the disciples who were in the boat with Jesus. Our boat rocks back and forth while we grasp for control. God asks us to put our trust in God every day. We stray a little further as the day goes on and the pressure builds. When the smallest strain creeps into life today, recite an Our Father and ask to be freed from all anxiety, today and every day.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 3 Feast of St. Thomas, apostle “Doubting” Saint Thomas has gotten a bad rap over the centuries. He of the skeptical attitude actually did us all a great service. His insistence on seeing for himself offers a sort of first-level proof that the disciples were

THURSDAY, JULY 4

Among the many difficult situations Saint Elizabeth had to face in her life was one involving her husband, the king of Portugal, and their son, Alfonso, the heir to the throne. The king wanted one of his several illegitimate children to succeed him. Twice the embittered Alfonso retaliated by trying to overthrow his father, and twice Elizabeth intervened. Pain in families can abide for lifetimes, even generations. Elizabeth of Portugal responded to the battles around her with efforts at reconciliation. Try to be a source of peace in your family.

SATURDAY, JULY 6 Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary In Jesus something new was happening. He came to people who had particular expectations about who their savior was going to be. When Jesus started teaching and working among them, many did not accept him. He was not only breaking a lot of the rules, he was throwing a few out, too. Some did not realize he was revealing a radically different way of knowing and following God. His mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, whom the church honors today and many other Saturdays, was open to that newness. She herself had taken an unconventional path. Are you ready to let your faith in Jesus change you? ©2013 by TrueQuest Communications, L.L.C. Reprinted with permission from Prepare the Word (©2013),.

Catholics for Freedom of Religion

America’s 1st Freedom: Religious Liberty In 1965, the Second Vatican Council gave to the world a declaration of religious freedom called Dignitatis Humanae, which states: “This Vatican Council declares that the human person has a right to religious freedom.” The American bishops were major contributors to the birth of this document because they were intimately acquainted with religious freedom, being citizens of the only nation on earth that has the principle of religious liberty at its very foundation. Now this liberty has come under attack. The principle of freedom of religion is violated by a regulation coming out of the new healthcare law. This regulation, the HHS Mandate, denies freedom of conscience to millions of Americans whom it would force to provide contraception, sterilization and abortion inducing drugs as part of the insurance coverage for employees of all entities exempting only the churches themselves. As Cardinal Dolan has said, “We have become certain of two things: Religious Freedom is under attack, and we will not cease in our struggle to protect it.” The Fortnight for Freedom, June 21 to July 4, 2013, was set aside by the USCCB as an important time to learn and pray and work together to restore the God given religious liberty guaranteed to Americans of every faith in our Constitution and Bill of Rights. The opening mass was by celebrated by Bishop Murphy on June 21st at the Cathedral of St. Agnes. On June 29, Catholics for Freedom of Religion co-sponsored a rally “Religious Freedom: Our 1st Amendment Right” at St John the Baptist High School.

The closing mass of the fortnight will be celebrated by Bishop Robert Brennan on July 4, at 12:10pm at St Agnes Cathedral. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” First Amendment, U.S. Constitution

As another school year comes to an end, we would like to thank the parish for all of the support given to the Youth Group. This year was a great success as we grew in our faith in many different ways. There is a collage of photos at the back of the church highlighting some events over the past year. I would also like to extend an extra thank you for all of your donations towards this year’s Midnight Run. On a very cold night in February, we were able to supply warm clothes and warm meals to those most in need. We could not be more grateful for your generous support of our ministry so that we can truly be the Hands of Christ to all we meet. Lastly, a special thanks to Fr. Bob for providing spiritual guidance by celebrating our teen masses and praying with and for us during all of our events. Again, thank you for all that you do to keep Youth Ministry Alive here at St. Boniface Martyr Parish! In Jesus Name, Chris Mandato, St. Boniface Youth Minister There will be no Youth Group meeting June 30th.
