Dear Parishioners,

"Seek first His Kingship over you, His way of holiness, and all these things will be given you besides. Mt 6:32 As we continue in St. Matthew's Gospel, Jesus builds on the teachings of the Sermon on the Mount. We are encouraged to trust in God for all things. As we hear in the Old Testament reading from the prophet Isaiah, "I will never forget you," it seems as if Jesus is making to much of a demand on the believers. How can we trust in God for all things? Maybe Jesus isn't talking to us today. After all, Jesus would not have experienced the economic down swing that we are experiencing today. Maybe He is only speaking to those who are employed or experiencing financial security. But we know in truth that those who were listening were poor, illiterate and certainly had no financial security. So we need to hear again the words...for us! While many of us are struggling and worrying over real concerns these days, still there are so many people in our surrounding world who are miserably poor and live in desperation each day. Maybe that is the lesson for us. Perhaps Jesus' words today should broaden our vision and help us focus less on ourselves and more on those in need; less about getting and more about giving; less worrying about our own welfare and more for the welfare of others. We need to hear the cries of those who struggle: the immigrants, the poor and homeless, those children in need of proper nutrition and education and for the elderly who fear being alone. Whatever the situation, we are called to be the hands of Jesus. In doing so, to live in trust that we know we are loved by the Father in heaven and to allow that knowledge to make us truly believe that He hears all our needs. In hearing our needs, we are called to be open to the needs of others. He offers us the possibility to be His presence to the least of our brothers and sisters. "Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself." Act today...it is the day the Lord has given you. As you heard last weekend, our Youth Group’s Annual Midnight Run was March 1. They go to the city in cars loaded with food, clothes and toiletries to meet the homeless on the streets. I have gone on numerous occasions, and I can tell you from experience that this is a life changing event. Our youth encounter the homeless, the most needy; not as the detested in our society, but as those in most need of Jesus' love and compassion. I thank you for your support and prayers for our youth and for the homeless. I am so happy that our Youth Group has this opportunity and I am equally pleased that we as a parish share in these blessings. In Jesus, Fr. Bob

TAKE FIVE FOR FAITH~ Invest just five minutes a day, and your faith will deepen and grow — a day at a time. SUNDAY, MARCH 2: EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME In the classic 1963 film Lilies of the Field Homer Smith, an itinerant handyman, pits his wits against the strongwilled Mother Maria, who, along with her band of immigrant sisters, is determined to build a chapel in the desert of the Southwest. In their heated debates about money and labor, Homer and Mother trade barbs and Bible quotes to make their case: She tells him to “consider the lilies” as an excuse for delaying him payment; he insists, as Luke 10:7 says, that “the laborer is worthy of his hire.” Such exchanges, though entertaining, are reminders that snippets of scripture are not meant to be used as weapons against your neighbor. Lent is an excellent time to read one of the gospels in its entirety to see the fullness of God’s word. MONDAY, MARCH 3: MEMORIAL OF KATHARINE DREXEL, VIRGIN, RELIGIOUS FOUNDER For as much enjoyment as wealth can bring, sometimes possessions end up owning you. The initial pleasure of new things fades, and no amount of money can truly buy security. Are you working hard to maintain—at great expense to your happiness—what has little lasting value? The American saint Katharine Drexel was a wealthy socialite who devoted her life and tremendous family fortune to helping poor Native Americans and African Americans through the order she founded, the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. Her voluntary poverty was a joyful liberation and left an enduring legacy of justice. TUESDAY, MARCH 4: MEMORIAL OF CASIMIR Saint Casimir, a 15th-century Polish prince renowned for his piety, is the patron saint of Poland and Lithuania. For centuries Lithuania has marked his feast day each year with a large folk art and crafts fair called the Kaziuo mugé, literally “Little Casimir’s Fair.” The music, drink, and dance attract multitudes of visitors as well as artisans from far and wide. It is good to commemorate a saint’s day with a celebration of life because sainthood is in a sense the very highest expression of a human life—life well lived in service to others. Live yours in such a way that others will wish to celebrate in your memory some day! WEDNESDAY, MARCH 5: ASH WEDNESDAY; DAY OF FAST AND ABSTINENCE Jesus issues a strong caution to be wary of a kind of spiritual boasting. Yet, after Mass or a prayer service today, you may be sporting a very real mark that identifies you at least as Christian and likely as Catholic. Isn’t that boasting? “Look at me. I’ve gone to church. I’m observing Lent.” Probably not; most will forget the mark is even there. You go about your business, unaware that the sign on your head has been silently evangelizing. After the ashes are washed away, in what way does your daily life testify to Christ, to the presence of love in the world? THURSDAY, MARCH 6 “I want to live again!” George Bailey yells out in It’s a Wonderful Life. On the brink of ruin in a moment of despair, George contemplates suicide, but with the help of an eccentric and ingenious angel, Clarence, he is given the chance to see how the world benefited from his life despite his many perceived failures. His numerous acts of kindness were generative, enabling countless subsequent kind acts by others. The film’s director, Frank Capra, once said of his role as filmmaker: “My films must let every man, woman, and child know that God loves them, and that I love them, and that peace and salvation become a reality only when they all learn to love each other.” Words to live by. FRIDAY, MARCH 7 On Fridays during Lent the church practices abstinence, normally defined as not eating meat. In an option-laden culture like ours, a day without bacon or burgers is hardly a sacrifice. Older Catholics recall a time pre-1966 when every Friday of the year was meat-free. Some monastic communities abstain from meat altogether. Twenty-first century Christians may ask: Is such food-avoidance really spiritually useful? The answer is yes. In a society awash in permissiveness, learning to say no to self is among the best ways to shape the moral life. Dedicate today’s “no” to tomorrow’s moral “yes.” SATURDAY, MARCH 8; MEMORIAL OF JOHN OF GOD, RELIGIOUS FOUNDER In his journey from hard-living soldier to founder of what would become a worldwide religious order, Saint John of God (1495-1550) worked for a while as seller of religious books. His job is a reminder that the church’s tradition of learning comes from books. Serious books offer a complete and coherent arrangement of relevant facts that represent the considerable research and insights of an author. If you’re not already reading a good book, think of Saint John in his shop in Spain almost 500 years ago and get one—even if it’s on your e-reader!
