Outreach Baskets The St. Boniface Outreach is asking parishioners to help with Thanksgiving Baskets by donating the following items: Stovetop stuffing, gravy, instant mashed potatoes, yams, green beans, corn and applesauce. Thank you.

BISHOP MURPHY is asking to continue our prayers at all Masses this weekend for the people of the Philippines and all those affected by Typhoon Haiyan. We are also united in prayer with our brothers and sisters in the diocese who are awaiting word from their families and loved ones from the devastated areas. Bishop has authorized a special collection to be taken at the masses this weekend, November 17, to assist those who are suffering the effects of the typhoon. To allow for timely assistance, Bishop has sent an advance of $50,000 immediately to the Church in the Philippines for relief work.

Toys for Tots

All funds collected in the parishes, should be remitted to the DRVC Finance Office. All checks should have the words “Philippines Collection” written in the memo section, so that they can be properly indentified and processed. Let’s keep all the victims and their families in our prayers.

The Globe and Anchor Detachment #225 of Glen Cove in conjunction with The United States Marine Corps Reserves are implementing their Toys-for-Tots Campaign. Please bring a new unwrapped gift for a needy child to St. Boniface Church. The Marines will pick up the Boxes on December 13. Thank you.

Dear Parishioners, "By your perseverance you will secure your lives." Lk 21:19 In today's Gospel Jesus is offering His followers encouragement when the road to faithfulness becomes difficult. He predicts that they will suffer much in His name and that the persecution may cause them to scatter. This is preempted by the question of the end of time. In both cases Jesus tells them that they are not be concerned. Faithfulness and trust will keep them grounded and secure in the knowledge of God's love. He reminds them that the Holy Spirit will guide and guard them in times of trial. What great advice this is for each of us. How often we can be leery about speaking about our faith in Jesus? Maybe its stems from our cultural understanding of separation of Church and State. Maybe it is from our fear of being labeled as a religious fanatic. Whatever the reason we are called by our Baptism to bear witness to Jesus at all times. In acknowledging Him in this life we will be acknowledged in the world to come. So persevere! Sometimes in the times of difficulty and stress in our lives we may be tempted give up on hope. When the road seems so difficult and life burdensome we can fell that God has abandoned us or at the very least that He is no longer hearing our cries. The Scripture reminds us that God is ever faithful and near to those who call upon His name. So persevere! There is much talk in the media about the end of time. Movies, books and television programs seem to be focusing more and more on the question of when the world will end. This surfaces fear in some of dying or of entrance into Eternal Life. The promise of Jesus is to trust that in all moments God is present with His hand to guide and protect us. If we have accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior then we have nothing to fear. Jesus wants to offer us His comfort. But we have to be open to the presence of Jesus in our lives. This comes from our prayer life and participation in the Eucharist. Letting Jesus enter our hearts will bring His peace. So when there seems to be "signs" of the end of time we know we have a promise. So persevere! There is much to make us uncertain in life. We have been given a guarantee that our lives are precious and that we are loved. May this knowledge gives us courage and help us to PERSEVERE! You will notice that a hand rail has been installed by the Tabernacle. This is to assist any of our ministers, or anyone who needs entrance into the sanctuary. Please be encouraged to take advantage of it. I would like to thank Charlie Sasso for installing the rail and Rich Harris for staining it. I am very appreciative of their work. As we close the Year of Faith, Bishop Murphy has asked that Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament be offered throughout the Diocese from Sunday, November 24th till Wednesday, November 27th. We will have Exposition as a deanery in the parishes of St. Hyacinth, St. Dominick and St. Paul. Our parish will be asked to cover Tuesday, November 23rd from 6:30pm till 8pm. More information will follow. Let us pray for the victims of the recent devastation in the Philippines. The Diocese has asked us for a special collection this weekend to assist those who are suffering from the effects of the typhoon. In Jesus, Fr. Bob

own heart. Do you dare to change? Will you lead a revolution of the heart, starting with your own? The world still waits in hope. Sunday, November 17 One of the reasons Jews feel a deep attachment to Jerusalem is the fact that in the year 70, a few decades after Jesus’ death, most of Jerusalem, including the Second Temple, was destroyed by the Romans. By one contemporary estimate, more than 1 million Jews lost their lives. Sixty years later Jews were banned from the region, and its name was changed from Judea to Syria Palestina. The complex conflicts of the present are brought into focus by the past. Deepen your faith by appreciating the history of the Holy Land and pray for peaceful resolutions to long-standing divisions there. Monday, November 18 Memorial of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne, virgin Among the saints we rarely come across references to the cities of New Orleans or St. Louis, yet those are where French-born Rose Duchesne wished one day to minister to Native Americans. Biographer Louise Callan points out that “Mother Duchesne suffered practically every hardship the frontier had to offer . . . poor lodging, shortages of food, drinking water, fuel, and money, and the vagaries of the Missouri climate,” yet she dealt with it all through prayer. By the time of her death in 1852 she was known by the indigenous name of Quahkahkanumad, the “Woman Who Prays Always.” Legend has it that some children once sneaked behind her as she knelt in prayer and sprinkled bits of paper on her habit. Hours later they found the paper undisturbed. Tuesday, November 19 What we see depends on our point of view: That familiar saying conveys the idea that our perspective shapes our vision. Recently Pope Francis spoke of the need to connect with other people and have vantage points other than our own: “We must create a ‘culture of encounter,’ a culture of friendship . . . in which we can also speak with those who think differently, as well as those who hold other beliefs. . . .” By going out to encounter others, as Jesus did, we take a step toward peace. We help to heal what Pope Francis calls a “culture of conflict” in our world. Who will you seek out today to help you get a new perspective? Wednesday, November 20 It is understandable that many who lived at the time of Jesus hoped he would lead a political revolution to free them from foreign control. The taxes were burdensome; the restrictions on their free expression of faith were onerous; and wasn’t there a promise of a Messiah who would liberate them? But Jesus had a larger vision of revolution. He understood that the only way a person could change the world for the good was to start in their

Thursday, November 21 Memorial of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Each of us desiring to call ourselves Christian has a moment at a particular age when we present ourselves to God and commit to his will and service toward others. The Feast of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, when we celebrate Mary’s youthful surrender to God, is a perfect time for our own recommitment to our faith. Remember the promises you made in the fervor of your Christian initiation: You rejected evil and the empty promises of power and glory; and you affirmed your belief in the Trinity, the forgiveness of sins, and the communion of saints. Study up on those tenants of the faith just in case you run into a bishop curious to see how well-prepared you are as you present yourself to God and the church community in the coming weeks in the march toward Advent. Friday, November 22 Feast of St. Cecilia, virgin, martyr “Music,” the great symphony orchestra conductor Sir Georg Solti liked to say, “is a miracle.” The church has long recognized the power of music. In its Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, the Second Vatican Council said: “The musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value. . . . Sacred music . . . adds delight to prayer, fosters unity of minds, or confers greater solemnity upon the sacred rites” (no. 112). The early Christian martyr Saint Cecilia is the patron saint of music. Honor her sacrifice by dedicating yourself to becoming more involved in the musical ministry of your faith community—even if that means simply singing more in church! Saturday, November 23 Memorial of St. Clement I, pope, martyr At a family gathering, a young man was debating the merits of various religious traditions with his aunt, a devout Catholic. She listened patiently as he outlined the comparative advantages of one and then another tradition. When he finally paused, she leaned in and said to him in a quiet, confident voice, “Yes, but we have apostolic succession.” Clement I was one of the earliest popes, entrusted by Saint Peter to lead the early church when it was barely decades old. The notion of apostolic succession is traced back to his writings: When Pope Francis speaks today, listen carefully for the echo of a long line of leaders entrusted by Jesus to shepherd his flock. ©2013 by TrueQuest Communications, L.L.C. St. Vincent de Paul Society The Gospel predicts end times; our challenge though is to live faithfully now. St. Vincent often asked this simple question: “What would Jesus Christ do, if he were in my place now? Ask yourself “What would Jesus Christ do?” and then put your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul poor box so that those who are suffering will be able to celebrate Thanksgiving.

Thanks to all of you for your support! Furniture and financial donations are always welcome. You are too! Come join the St. Vincent de Paul Society and become a communal part of your parish. Call 822-3132.
