DYLLIC SETTING IN BUCKHEAD

Entered by an unassuming gate at the end of West Paces Ferry and approached down a tree-lined drive with towering deciduous pine and oak trees, the Manor House emerges from its verdant surroundings with a timeless elegance that blends seamlessly with the landscape. “The visitor approaches the Manor House through an arrival courtyard surrounded by a step level stone wall of plantings and a large cascading water feature. A curved stone walk is adjacent to a water basin with recirculating water fountains that provide sound and interest. The planters feature specimen Natchez crepe myrtles, Japanese maples and fragrant evergreen plants accompanied by changing seasonal color displays. Thirty-year old American boxwoods, majestic hollies, crepe myrtles,

tea olives and a bay magnolia were planted to provide instant age and character and reduce the large scale of the home. A year after completion visitors remarked that the home looked as if it had been there for more than thirty years. “ -Jim Gibbs, Designer

ELCOMING ENTRY FOYER

Set within the cut limestone of The Manor House front facade, mahogany windows grace the many gables and dormers, concealing the structure’s overall length and size. One of the more prominent features is a custom octagonal sun room with hand-carved trusses and finials. A wooden trellis, set atop stone columns, runs the entire length of a lap pool and connects the main house to a nearby summer house.

ARM AND INVITING WITH UNIQUE FEATURES

The interiors mirror the significance of natural materiality already evident on the exterior of the home. Plain stucco walls are accented with smooth or rough limestone trim, and the floors vary from wide heart pine boards to antique French terracotta tile. The scale of the rooms vary from intimate to grand. The projecting octagonal shape of the breakfast room accents the entry facade and is accessed immediately from the foyer. The intimate room inspired by the far more grand Winter Garden at

the Biltmore House in Asheville visually opens upward with a glass ceiling suspended between mahogany trusses and outward through mahogany French doors. The heart of the home is shaped like a medieval hall with clerestory windows, heavy timber trusses and a massive fireplace with a squared timber mantel.

IVERLEY HOUSE

The original structure built on the property was a hunting lodge for a former Governor of Georgia, but in 1935, Atlanta furniture king, A. Rhodes Perdue purchased the property and commissioned his college friends, Ed Ivey and Lewis Cook to design “Riverly.” The white-columned mansion which is your prototypical “Southern mansion,” sits on 23 +/- acres of lush, wooded property that borders the Chattahoochee River. The property was purchased in 1955 by Dan and Charlotte Garson and remained in the family until it was purchased in 1998 by the current owners.

Today there are rows of mature magnolia trees, planted by Mrs. Perdue, on both sides of the driveway that lead to the entrance of this stately, nearly eighty-year old home. The circular motor court leads you to the beautiful columned entry and sprawl of the home. Renovations and additions to the “Riverly” house began in 1998 and upon completion, successfully preserved the home’s original beauty while offering the new owners all the comforts of today’s modern conveniences.

UDOR HOUSE

After coming through the entry gate and meandering past the common areas of the compound, a turn at the second driveway brings you into the motorcourt of the Tudor residence. The home is situated on an angle which, with the additional of the porte cochere, gives the entry a more enclosed, intimate feel. Cast stone accents and ornamentation, overlapping gables and multiple chimneys provide depth and interest to the brick exterior of this modern interpretation of a Tudor home. The most stunning feature of the facade is a stepped wall of leaded glass that floods the main stair and dining room with colorful prisms of light. Dramatic columns and arches are a recurring design element that are used to open interior spaces and provide an elegant backdrop for the homeowner’s wide ranging collection of art. Exterior columns and arches form a loggia that spans the length of the living and dining rooms for easy entertaining. The terrace level provides an engaging departure from the airy design of the main living areas. A vaulted brick ceiling and wooden doors lead the way to a carved bar, small stone wine cellar, recreation space and state-of-the-art media room. Overlooking the large meadow, pool area and the Chattahoochee River in the distance, the view from the terrace level reminds one that they are in a private oasis within the city.

RIVATE GROUNDS IN THE HEART OF BUCKHEAD

“The plant palette for the garden is extensive and no color was turned away; there is, however, a preponderance of pastel colors in the spring and warmer colors for the hotter months of the summer. The border is arranged in large, alternating drifts or pockets of fall and spring bloomers with summer flowers sown in a wide connecting swath throughout. The retaining wall allows the “creepers and edgers” the elevation to necessary reveal themselves fully while the depth of some of the beds affords masses of Tartarian Asters to reach the full height of eight feet. Roses, peonies, phlox, sweet William, daisies and many others all take their turn performing.” -Jeremy Smearman, Designer
